DAY 028
SOMETHING ON THE WIND
Another day dawns in the fair town of Mathias. The sky is a blanket of light grey, tiny specks of snow lightly falling as the hours pass. It makes the town feel almost quaint, the scenery quite peaceful in its winter garb. But beneath the veneer of peace there is a pervasive dread of something approaching. Something inevitable is on the wind, something that has come before and will come again...
Throughout the day, residents will consistently experience feelings of deja vu, that sense of having done or seen or said something before that can never be fully recalled. It happens again and again, tugging at the back of their minds, the memories just frustratingly out of reach.
Residents will also notice a note pinned around town:
The note can be found on the town hall's bulletin board and the front doors of many town establishments, including the Grey Gull, the library, and the boarding house. At the bottom of the note it is specified that the meeting will take place "tomorrow, when the sun is over the town square."NEW ARRIVALs
The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake on the frozen lawn of the town hall atop a snowdrift. They had best hurry inside and get warmed up before hypothermia sets in.

DAY 029
A GATHERING OF MINDS
In the late afternoon when the sun hangs over the town square, residents will converge upon the Town Hall, where a larger meeting room has been filled with rows of chairs. After most people arrive, John Constantine stands and addresses the room... and then sits again. A grand introduction, truly.
Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and information they have gathered in the town while holding questions until the end. Rather than getting tangled in the intricacies of each person's tale, it seems better to absorb the broad strokes and try to connect the puzzle pieces to get a look at the bigger picture that is the mystery of Mathias Township.THE INEVITABLE
As the meeting comes to an end and residents begin to converse among themselves, the feeling of something approaching and sense of deja vu begin to build, becoming almost oppressive as night falls. An hour after nightfall, residents learn the reason for these sensations that cease immediately as the earth begins to rumble. The buildings shake, furniture tumbles, and breakables crash to the floor as the earthquake sets in without warning.
The tremors last around a minute, far longer than a normal earthquake, and then the town settles again. There are no aftershocks, which many may note is quite unusual. Residents will find quite a bit of mess in their homes and other locations around town, but there is no structural damage to be found despite the intense shaking.

CONDITIONS UPDATE — THE WEATHER is fairly typical of a northern winter. The sky is grey, the temperature hovers just below freezing during the day (colder at night), and a light snow falls during both days. Residents should bundle up when going outside and not venture too far into the dark night...
— THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the northern section of town, beginning just before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be. Venturing into the fog is ill-advised.
— DISAPPEARANCES continue with Sherlock Holmes being the latest victim of the town's unsettling whims.OOC NOTES — TOWN MEETING STRUCTURE The town meeting section of the log is designed for characters to share any information they would like to with the other residents in attendance. ICly, characters should "hold questions until the end" with the intent that they can get the Big Picture first and connect any dots they see. OOCly, this means players should post their character's information sharing tag in the Meeting section, but the actual conversation about whatever they share happens after the meeting proper in the Mingle section. That way, these conversations can happen however players prefer, be that one-on-one or in small or large groups.
— HOUSING Please be sure your character's housing arrangements are up to date on our list. We're missing a few people and it really helps to know where everyone is for planning. Frequent updates for wandering characters are perfectly acceptable.
— THE BULLETIN BOARD has been updated. Players should note there is a change to the wall near the board that may be of great interest to some residents.

He's sprawled across a row of chairs when Five blips over to sit in the chair next to the one Klaus has his head rested in. He tips his head further back to be able to look at him. "What, you mean- me?" He snorts and for a moment he's all limbs as he tries to sit up. He spins and stops when he's turned to face Five, ankles crossed, legs hugged up to his chest. "You know I'm not the investigator guy in all this, Five..."

"I'm just saying, it's like we have morsels of the bigger picture, but even with everything gathered in one place, we're no closer to understanding what this place truly is."
His head leans back, back, back, until the backrest digs almost unpleasantly into the back of his neck and he stares up. "I got my theories, obviously, but it's not going to mean anything if I can't actually use it."

"Isn't that how it always goes? And then the world's in flames before we get the last puzzle piece... this time, it's just a long-game thing, instead of wham-bam-slam everything down on the table in two days." He shrugs and reaches over his knees to wrap long fingers around his ankles. "You'll figure it out it, just in time to save everybody, like you always do." He really does have this deep-rooted, unfettered belief in Five and all of his abilities, and capabilities.

He never did consider a time that would allow him to spend more of it with his siblings.
That wasn't ever the first intention. Yes, getting back to his family was a priority. But first and foremost, it was their safety, followed by keeping the world whole, because he loved them and it very, very much.
He never considered the depths of what he wanted, stripped of everything that he was. Sometimes, he wondered if he would ever be allowed that, but those were moments of quiet introspection that he couldn't dwell on for long. It never took priority.
Even now, it doesn't. Because even if Klaus was accounted for, the rest of them weren't. Which meant for all the sentiment shared, none of this was over. None of this supposed complacency and Five needed to remember that.
But Klaus says that, all quiet like, and something tightens in Five's chest and works his jaw. "Yeah," he exhales. "Yeah, me too."
Klaus' unfettered belief in him is misplaced, he would argue. His tenacity might be unquestionable, but their success rate hadn't been good. And Five can't deny that. "I'm going to try, at least. Hopefully, we can get enough puzzle pieces together."

Five got back to them-- but he was the wrong age because of those miscalculations; They stopped one Apocalypse-- only to get spread out and separated in time away from each other; They stopped another Apocalypse-- only for two of them to end up here, the the others.... who knows where. And Ben. Ben was gone completely now. He had it out that time with Doc, after Five had died shortly after Klaus got here. But it didn't mean he'd processed it all the way. That even when they find their way out of Mathias he'll still be without Ben, just like everyone else all these years.
"We will." Klaus nods, certain of that, even when he has no right to be. Even when he knows he personally won't be part of that.
the emotional whiplash of all of our threads though.
Sat there on the uncomfortable chairs with the ache still pulling at his inhales - dulled considerably now, but obvious enough to be a persistent thorn - Five isn't sure he sees a way out of this mess.
It should still be a relief, to know that it evidently wasn't any fault of theirs. But there was always a what if. There was always that potential for disaster.
Five can't protect Klaus from this place though. Can't protect him from the realities of whatever the fuck Number Four has faced and will in the unpredictable clutches of Mathias, and that perhaps will never be the end goal.
But he'll be damned if he doesn't try, with all that savior complex wrapped up in crimson guilt.
"Christ, but this got boring quickly," he tosses another look around the Town Hall. "And there's absolutely no snacks in sight, huh."
ikr? just means we're being accurate cuz that's canon LOL
He rolls his head across his shoulder to stare impossibly at his brother. "Come on, who're you talking to? You think I didn't bring snacks?" Out of his jacket pocket, he suddenly produces two candy bars-- a Fudge Nutter for Five, and some caramel-chocolate monstrosity for himself.
lmao touche!!
"Alright Houdini, you win this one," is Five's light reply, biting down something of a satisfied grin in exchange for tearing into the Fudge Nutter. "Where do you keep the stash, anyway?"
no subject
He grins like he just won a prize as his brother eagerly attacked the candy. "If I told you, you wouldn't have any left." He reaches over and taps the end of his brother's nose with one finger. Yes, he did just admit to rationing out your candy bars, Five. You're welcome.
