DAY 028
SOMETHING ON THE WIND

Another day dawns in the fair town of Mathias. The sky is a blanket of light grey, tiny specks of snow lightly falling as the hours pass. It makes the town feel almost quaint, the scenery quite peaceful in its winter garb. But beneath the veneer of peace there is a pervasive dread of something approaching. Something inevitable is on the wind, something that has come before and will come again...

Throughout the day, residents will consistently experience feelings of deja vu, that sense of having done or seen or said something before that can never be fully recalled. It happens again and again, tugging at the back of their minds, the memories just frustratingly out of reach.

Residents will also notice a note pinned around town:

The note can be found on the town hall's bulletin board and the front doors of many town establishments, including the Grey Gull, the library, and the boarding house. At the bottom of the note it is specified that the meeting will take place "tomorrow, when the sun is over the town square."

NEW ARRIVALs

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake on the frozen lawn of the town hall atop a snowdrift. They had best hurry inside and get warmed up before hypothermia sets in.

DAY 029
A GATHERING OF MINDS

In the late afternoon when the sun hangs over the town square, residents will converge upon the Town Hall, where a larger meeting room has been filled with rows of chairs. After most people arrive, John Constantine stands and addresses the room... and then sits again. A grand introduction, truly.

Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and information they have gathered in the town while holding questions until the end. Rather than getting tangled in the intricacies of each person's tale, it seems better to absorb the broad strokes and try to connect the puzzle pieces to get a look at the bigger picture that is the mystery of Mathias Township.

THE INEVITABLE

As the meeting comes to an end and residents begin to converse among themselves, the feeling of something approaching and sense of deja vu begin to build, becoming almost oppressive as night falls. An hour after nightfall, residents learn the reason for these sensations that cease immediately as the earth begins to rumble. The buildings shake, furniture tumbles, and breakables crash to the floor as the earthquake sets in without warning.

The tremors last around a minute, far longer than a normal earthquake, and then the town settles again. There are no aftershocks, which many may note is quite unusual. Residents will find quite a bit of mess in their homes and other locations around town, but there is no structural damage to be found despite the intense shaking.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER is fairly typical of a northern winter. The sky is grey, the temperature hovers just below freezing during the day (colder at night), and a light snow falls during both days. Residents should bundle up when going outside and not venture too far into the dark night...

THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the northern section of town, beginning just before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be. Venturing into the fog is ill-advised.

DISAPPEARANCES continue with Sherlock Holmes being the latest victim of the town's unsettling whims.

OOC NOTES
TOWN MEETING STRUCTURE The town meeting section of the log is designed for characters to share any information they would like to with the other residents in attendance. ICly, characters should "hold questions until the end" with the intent that they can get the Big Picture first and connect any dots they see. OOCly, this means players should post their character's information sharing tag in the Meeting section, but the actual conversation about whatever they share happens after the meeting proper in the Mingle section. That way, these conversations can happen however players prefer, be that one-on-one or in small or large groups.

HOUSING Please be sure your character's housing arrangements are up to date on our list. We're missing a few people and it really helps to know where everyone is for planning. Frequent updates for wandering characters are perfectly acceptable.

THE BULLETIN BOARD has been updated. Players should note there is a change to the wall near the board that may be of great interest to some residents.

[ John Constantine sits in the meeting room of Town Hall. Oh, he's posed a few notes here and there around the town. Bit hard to pick a "time" for a meeting when "time" is such a bloody abstract concept in Mathias. Still, he's done his best. Coulson's there too, jotting down notes in the ledger.

He stands up once who all is going to arrive shows up. He looks out over the semi-filled room and gestures to them. ]

Alright, you wankers. Start talking.

[ Then, he sits down and props his feet up on the table. That's it, that's all folks.

Welcome to the Town Hall Meeting. ]

[ Daisy has taken up a spot at the edge of the room, near a corner where she can see everyone. It's a hard habit for a spy to break, not having their back to the room. She arrived early and watched people file in, then she watched Constantine stand and... Okay then.

After a few seconds of everyone just seeming to stare at each other, she sighs and stands, crossing her arms that have strips of fabric wrapped around her palms and wrists that are visible beneath her grey sweater. ]

Guess I'll start. A few — weeks? — ago, I disappeared. It was the same day everyone got those phone calls and the fog... [ Everyone who was around then knows what the fog did. She clears her throat and shifts her weight from one foot to the other. ]

I was up early and didn't hear the phone. I was outside on the porch of the boarding house, and then I was near the woods and it was snowing. A few days had apparently passed but I don't remember them. I felt disoriented, but that was it.

[ She's quiet for a moment, then adjusts her stance again. ]

I've been going through all the papers here in Town Hall. There's nothing weird in any of it, which is weird in itself. Everything seems like it was completely normal here, so either it was and all of this happened after, or someone was hiding something on purpose.

[ Looking around for a moment, she starts to sit, then stops and adds: ] I think we should just say what we know and get into the details afterward. We probably all have different pieces of this puzzle and it'll be better to get them on the table first before trying to assemble them.

[ Then she does sit, arms crossed and shoulders hunched against that damn feeling of dread that she just can't shake. ]

Helen-centric quetsions this log -- a true shock, I know!

— Is there any documentation/pictures remaining in the clinic? Especially revolving around Dr. Ken Suzuki or patients.
— I can't find it listed anywhere, so it may be buried in an old comment thread. Are generic over-the-counter pain medications at the General Store, on top of First Aid supplies?
— Does the feeling of dread remain in the Clinic? If so, how long can someone stay inside before it becomes overwhelming where they need to run away?

— What information can be learned about the owners of her new home on Jackson BLVD? As she is going through their personal effects and demolishing aspects of their poor garage.
— Are basic took kits found in Mathias? Hammers, nails, drills, ect (Sorry for the edit, realized I should of added this)

Thank ya, Keeper!

Despite the warnings on the bulletin board, Eliot would like to test the fog and see it with his own eyes and see if it's worth all the hype. Plus, he doesn't trust anybody, even with the warnings. He'll do the following by the forest path at the very edge of the fog:

1. Toss a stone into the fog and see if anything happens?
2. Toss a stick into the fog and see if anything happens?
3. Take a step into the fog to see if it smells like anything?

[ ooc: long post incoming with all the info Claire's found so far. I've bolded some things for emphasis just for skimming purposes while reading. ]

[ Claire's been a bit of a rare sight after her untimely death and resurrection. Now that she's back, she looks like she's contemplating crawling right back into some grave or other.

Public speaking - what a stupid concept. She was half tempted to just shove her notebooks into someone else's hands, but... no. ]

So, uhm. Anyone else feel like they're back in high school getting graded on some shit? Or maybe this is more like one of those AA meetings they always like on TV...

[ She tucks her hair behind her ear with her left hand. The right is notably bandaged with what looks like torn sheets stained red. After clearing her throat, Claire flicks open her notebook, worries her lower lip a little and then looks into the faces of the gathered people almost defiantly. ]

When we arrived, I hung out in the Anders house. 1306. Scavenged my way through it, found little of note, except the certificate of a baby's baptism. [ She pulls it out of her notebook, folded up as it is, and holds it up for everyone to see. ] Evan Anders, born March 14, baptized in April at the Old Church. It was signed by the parents as well as the officiant, and there's a strange spiral symbol on the certificate as you can see. For those of you old men with squinty eyes: The writing is dark red. I have no idea if it's blood. I found no convenient 'blood rituals and cults 101' books in the house. The year is illegible on the certificate.

Uhm... right, first town exploration I did after the storm, nearly froze to death in this miserable place. Felt like someone was watching us, too. And I don't mean 'oh it's spooky in the dark', listen, I know when someone or something is watching me, and I'm telling you something was.

[ She takes a deep breath, then flips the page and scowls. Her poorly bandaged hand flexes. ]

Next... that fucking door. So... there's a door on the top floor of the boarding house. It's locked. The lock can't be picked. Liberal applications of violence with and without super powers do not open the door. No key to be unearthed for it in the boarding house. Teleporting inside doesn't work. I knocked on it and heard scraping furniture, but it didn't open, and trying to talk at it didn't work either. I shoved a note under the door and it just appeared in my room without response or reaction. I hate this door. Fuck this door.

[ Deep breath. Claire clears her throat, cheeks a little red in embarrassment. Next page. ]

So, ah. You know our Bulletin Bord in town hall? So I put a note on it that maybe contained the letters F and U, and I signed it with my name. The note was just chilling there for like five days, but after that my name was gone from the note. I... took it down then.

[ She looks a little sheepish at this, the tough girl act sliding sideways just a touch for a moment before she straightens her back. ]

Anyway, speaking of town hall... There are no maps there, like at all, which I find strange, and there's also nothing there written before someone invented typewriters or whatever. There was mention of the transfer of older records to the Archive, though.

[ She taps her pen against her notebook, looking uncomfortable. For a moment the pause stretches uncomfortably and she looks like she's gonna abandon her position and stop sharing. ]

So I don't have a lot of information on like... the weird spectres, with the lanterns. I was a little pre-occupied. Well. I died because I didn't answer a phone, and then the windows exploded and I suffocated in my room. Anyway. No big deal, y'know, but. Yeah. Well. Anyway. I followed the spectres. They all just ended up going into the forest, where we can't follow. I tried throwing things at them, too. They didn't react or seem affected.

So, checking out the Historical Society... lots of old newspapers in the archive, but not many from sequential years, and all of them from nearby towns, not from Mathias. Found clippings of Mathias residents who did something worth showing up in papers outside this place, dating back to about the mid-1800s. Biggest of those events I found was a fire in 1831 that destroyed nearly the entire town, leaving only a few buildings intact and only 12 survivors. Cause of the fire reported was a lightning storm. No names for the survivors, no mention of which buildings survived either, but it was specified the fire didn't spread to the forest, so. Go murder forest, good on you for not burning down I guess.

The most recent article I found was from April 7th, 1993. Local student got a scholarship to a fancy school or something.

Also checked out the gallery... I'm not a very artsy person, honestly. There's lots of black and white photographs of Mathias in there. I found a picture of an opening in the cliffside along the beach, but I couldn't tell where that was taken. Maybe like a cave or something under Mathis though. There was also like a creepy old 'The Ring' style well in the forest, and a picture of the light from the lighthouse, and of the school house with children playing near the trees, and just... town square, and people milling about. Oh, I found one picture under the door to the dark room, which I couldn't open by the way. The picture was in colour, it showed the sky all red above a roof, but I have no idea what building that could have been. The roof looked super distinct, but doesn't match any of the buildings I've seen here so far.

[ Another deep breath, then a longer pause. Claire casts her eyes through the room again. ]

So, remember there was that day that we all just sort of... lost, right? Our 11th day here, if I tracked right and time didn't get its panties in a twist? So, I actually woke up in a mansion. I'll get to why that's important later. It was just rows upon rows of identical looking, super tidy, elegant and sparse rooms, and feeling like something was watching me through the mirrors, just at the edge of my vision. Through the windows in the corridors I could see a large forest. Found a skeleton key, haven't found what it unlocks. Doesn't work on the stupid boarding house door, that much is certain, or the dark room in the gallery. The hallways had doors with weird snake engravings. I went through a metric shit ton of identical corridors, until I found the landing of a staircase. Upstairs was dusty and derelict. I found a room, the doors locked behind me. There was a large pile of luggage, and a pile of burnt paper with a circle of soot under it. And when I mean circle, I don't mean vaguely circular, I mean it was a super precise circle, so definitely not naturally occuring. In the burnt paper I found fragments of maps, one piece containing a legend and the words "Mathias, established 1693". There was also a stretch of forest with a large building in it, and then I woke up.

I mention this 'cause... remember how some of us were in a mansion a few days ago? Same place. Just... couldn't find the dusty upstairs. There were more skeleton keys there, much larger than the one I found but otherwise similar. Maps of Mathias that don't match up the layout of the place we're in. Here, I noted down the dates for them... 1702, 1754, 1783, 1801. And... well, I got that same weird sensation of seeing something at the edge of my vision through the mirrors, so I smashed one. [ She raises her hand with the bloody, improvised bandage and shrugs. ] The scratching from the floor boards downstairs and from the ceiling upstairs was, uhm... new. So... well.

Yeah. That's... that's about it, I think. I got some notes on people, too, but like... I mean, on what people can do. 'cause we got all sorts of people there, but honestly... I'm not here to rat shit out, so. Yeah.... next?

[ And she sits back down, cheeks reddened - and oh so very done. ]

— There is no documentation whatsoever in the clinic. There isn't even a location where documentation would have been stored, like a filing cabinet.
— Yes, basic over-the-counter things can be found in small quantities at the General Store.
— The feeling of dread and wariness does still remain in the Clinic. Those who venture inside will be able to stay no more than 15 minutes at a time.

— The house was formerly inhabited by Roberta and August Jones, who were in their 70s, judging by the various photos of them found around the house. They had many hobbies, including gardening, playing chess, and traveling to various places in the northeast — photos of their travels are stored in albums, and old guidebooks fill their bookshelves.
— Basic tool kits can be found in most homes in Mathias. Nothing fancy, just what one might normally keep around for small house repairs.

Oh, Eliot.

1. Nothing happens.
2. Nothing happens.
3. The fog doesn't smell like anything, but if Eliot remains within the fog for longer than a few seconds, he will begin to feel its effects: fear and panic will set in quickly, resulting in a strong, irresistible instinct to flee the fog.

I asked about the recorder last log but additional to that:
1. How many cassette tapes can Melanie find with the recorder she ends up with?
2. If she plays those tapes before recording over them, is there anything useful/interesting/otherwise noteworthy on them?

Housing questions
3. Her houses phone number?
4. Anything of note in her house she may have been able to come across? (I’ll OOCly work out the “how she knows” details when I know what she might find)

He's here because of Five. Five told him the meeting was happening, and also demanded Klaus come and tell whatever pieces of the Mathias puzzle he has on hand. Something about the more information, the closer to answers, honestly-- he stopped listening. Point is: Five is pretty much the reason Klaus is here.

He patiently waits through a few rounds of info-- holy shit, Claire! He. Is. impressed!-- before standing up to speak.

"Hi. I'm Klaus and I'm an addi--" He waves one hand. "My bad. Wrong meeting." He gives a titter of a laugh. "Anyway! So--" He claps his hands together and spins on his heel to turn and face the majority of the crowd.

Aaaaand now here comes the exuberance and charisma, people!

He's very upbeat in his accounts, except where appropriate to grimace, wince, or otherwise emote in a different manner. He talks with his hands, and they're basically in constant motion. Like so:

He folds his hands one on top of the other and presses them flat against the center of his chest to indicate himself before dropping them and spreading in a sort of display of himself instead. "I'm Klaus and I'm a medium. Yes, ghosts are real, the quicker you accept that, the quicker the inevitable conversation you nay-sayers want to have with me will go. Yes, that means under normal circumstances, I can talk to your dead Aunt Francis. No, I cannot do that at the present time, which brings me to--" He takes on an affected, accented voice and waves one hand in a flourish. "ah-pointe zeh first."

"There are no ghosts in this town. Like- none. Zero. Cero. Null. Zip. Zlich. Nada. Nein. Nyet. And I have looked for them, sought them out and it doesn't matter because they don't exist here. And as someone who has been surrounded by ghosts since I was four? It's really unsettling, actually."

"Awhile back...some people--" He visibly has to take a second, here. His eyes shoot over toward his brother for the briefest flicker of a second before he presses on. "some people died. I tried to channel one of the bodies." He pauses and his voice is soft, though still loud enough to hear anywhere in the room one might be standing. "It was the emptiest nothing that I've ever felt in my life." He fidgets idly, just thinking about it makes him feel that same unsettled vibe again. "I felt like... like if I didn't sever the connection, the void would swallow me up."

It takes him a moment or two to recover, but after a breath, he continues. "Everybody remember the weird little shadow-men with the lanterns? Yeah- I thought it was my chance, again, you know--" He waves one hand. "a ghost! I could talk to them, get answers!" He pulls an unflattering face and lets his shoulders deflate. "but... nah. It wasn't...anything? Like- not like before, just-- no reading at all from them, it was weird."

"And the guy that was across that giant crack, he showed up the same time as the light show brigade-- Okay, so I tried the same thing. And ohhh, boy did I get a reading off that guy!" He shudders just thinking about it. "I still have nightmares about it." It sounds like one of those flippant 'it sounds good at the time' remarks, but it's actually true. Ask his brother. Five wakes up to Klaus' freak outs frequently. "He was cold and dark in ways I don't know how to put into words. It wasn't good, like- like the coldest, heaviest, darkest dread you've ever felt, times ten, personified."

He shifts, face contorting into a sort of half-cocky, half-sheepish smirk, arms sweeping out to either side of him with a scoff. "I'll be honest-- that mansion?" His eyebrows arch up in a nearly suggestive manner and he shakes his head. "Iiiii really didn't do a lot of looking, except for liquor cabinets. It was a nice break." He shrugs. "Though, I did see a shadow-thing in the mirror..." He purses his lips and shrugs-- then his face lights up again with a memory. "Oooh, and there were dates on the maps in the study! Hopefully one of you guys--" He gestures vaguely into his audience. "Captured those, cuz, uh-- I didn't." He almost looks sheepish.

Then beams a grin wider than a country mile and clasps his hands together again. "Anyway, that's all I've got! Feel free to come chat about it, but I don't have any more answers than anyone else at this point."

He gives some approximation of a bow before plopping back down in his seat again.

There was never any doubt that Melanie would show up to this meeting, as soon as she heard about it. She has a tape recorder and quietly records the whole of the initial part of the meeting-- she wants to go back and listen to it all again later and see what connections she can draw when she has it all together.

She's wearing a pair of sunglasses, which will be seen on her face at all times from this point forward. She's hoping it'll help with both, the discomfort of looking at the damage of her eyes as well as serving as the relatively universal sign of letting people know 'Hey, I'm blind.'.

She listens, mostly, but at a point she does decide to say her piece.

“Melanie King. I'm still mostly new here, so I don't have much to add. That said, where I come from, there are...powers at play, all drenched in and based on various fears that exist in the world. Real...deep-rooted, primal stuff. An overwhelming amount of what you lot are saying is striking eerily close to home, so... if you wanna hear more about that, and why it feels that way, I'll be here awhile. Thanks.”

Klaus gave quite the colorful speech about what he knew and he's easily approached; he can be found mingling around the room or lounging stretched out across a row of chairs.

Personally, he doesn't think his contributions mean much-- he keeps coming up empty every time he thinks he might have a chance at really getting somewhere. Ghosts have always been his one ticket to knowing anything, and that doesn't really exist here. He's at a bit of a loss of how else to be useful in this place. He's not a researcher or explorer. The only things he's really ever been good at was blowing his own mind out of the atmosphere with drugs and talking.

He was so goddamn good at talking, he literally, accidentally created a fucking cult in the 60's, for fuck's sake. As much as Destiny's Children really blew too far out of proportion to the point that he couldn't control any of it anymore... he misses them. The sense of community and togetherness that came with them.

He sits up and glances around, watches the people mill about, talking amongst themselves, but with everyone, too. It's the first time that Klaus knows of that they've all taken the time to stop and be in one place, at the same time, and really see each other. Introductions are going around in spades, conversations growing in every direction. The scene makes a smile touch his lips, wider than he meant it to be, and more genuine than the trademark smirks he gives everyone for free.

They could do it here. They could be more together, more unified, they just have to try.

An idea he isn't prepared to speak on just yet is rising in the back of his mind and he still has that smile pressed firmly onto his lips as he sinks back to lay against the row of chairs again.

Melanie didn't have much to contribute to the conversation as a whole, she hasn't been here long enough to really learn any sort of "secrets" the town might be holding. She did, however, take note of how many times she could classify various Entities of her world into the stories everyone was divulging. It was often enough, it made her wary.

Day 28: Closed to Castiel

[personal profile] waywardsister 2021-01-24 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ It still takes some adjusting - living with Dean and Castiel.

well, who is she kidding, no... it's downright weird. Not bad, just... yeah. Claire's gotten used to sharing the house with Jody and Alex, and lives alone in her car and in motel rooms when on the road during a case. This arrangement is... weird. And new.

Quite frankly, she feels oddly crowded in and doesn't quite know why. They're not doing anything except... existing. And caring. And being their usual brand of gross weird brothers-dads-uncles.

Ugh.

Still. Living in such close proximity, and having Cas back despite the dire news Dean intitially had to share with her... It's not a bad deal honestly. It also means, though, that she gets to watch them.

And that means she gets to watch them be weird at each other.

Something's up. And Claire has every intention of skillfully, tactfully unearthing secrets via subtle interrogation of the less emotionally constipated dude in the house - which ironically is an angel wearing her father's corpse.

Her life feels like a dumb TV show sometimes.

Regardless... they've all been back from their weird little trips for a while, she still has her hand bandaged with torn sheets - downgraded from manor sheets to abandoned house sheets, thanks for nothing Mathias, and launches operations sneak attack by casually wandering over to Cas and beginning the most skilfull, subtle, roundabout interrogation... by way of applying a battering ram to the topic. ]

So, you and Dean are acting weirder than usual.

Requested reward: Spot Hidden (or Spooky Encounter if something weird happens, open to either option)
Characters involved: will add later if someone is tagging along
Link to thread: will add later
Additional details: After Ellie shares her Idea that there may be underground passages, he will want to walk slowly and carefully around 1307 Phillips Drive (the moonshine/Hirano house) until the floor creaks differently, or feel some wind/air coming up between the floorboards, or check in the rooms/move furniture around looking for any trap doors etc. If the floor is just normal he will start prying up floorboards at random. If it is more convenient for something to be unearthed/revealed after the earthquake I can time this thread for end of day 29; quite flexible with this.

Ellie is fidgety about this, because she doesn't really like talking to groups, but she figures she should say something anyway.

"Um...look, I don't like the whole public speaking thing so I'll just say my bit and go, but. There's something dangerous in the museum. Henry and I boarded it up again, but I know some of you guys don't give a shit about warnings and will do whatever you want. Something in there is spitting out spores into the air. Where I come from, spores like that are a definite fucking death sentence. Here...I guess we don't know. i don't wanna find out without guns to fight anything the spores affect."

She says anything but she means anyone. This is as close as she gets to tact.

"What else. Um...back near the beginning of all of this, I had this crazy fucking dream where I woke up in some stone place with a hallway? I dunno. But there was a knife and a bowl in this chest thing. I took the knife, but when I picked up the bowl, it...uh, it started bleeding? Like the whole horror movie Indiana Jones booby trap filling with blood thing? But then I woke up. And I was all bloody, and...I had the knife. I still have it actually. It's got something carved into the handle but I have no fucking clue what that is."

Okay, deep breath. This is a lot of talking.

"Also, like, I know this sounds pretty batshit but everything here is pretty batshit. I was thinking, you know, the people that lived here...did they really just sit in their houses every fucking time the weather went apeshit on them? What if they had another way to get around? Like tunnels or...or something? I'm just throwing that out there."

She shoves her hands in her pockets, still fidgety.

"I guess that's it. Oh, I...have a bunch of first aid stuff if anyone gets hurt. Some painkillers. Not the heavy duty kind, but they work. Yeah. That's it."

Ellie said her piece at the town hall meeting.

Feel free to come talk to her afterwards to ask her about her knife, the museum thing, or the tunnel idea.

Other options: remember that Ellie has a guitar! She asked for it on the bulletin board, which people may have seen. She also has a pun thread going on if anyone else has a terrible sense of humour.
