DAY 065-071
ASSIGN TO OBLIVION

“No matter how much time passes, no matter what takes
place in the interim, there are some things we can never
assign to oblivion, memories we can never rub away.”
— Haruki Murakami

Only two days have passed since the town was fractured, leaving residents cut off from those they'd come to know and even care for. A mere two days of wandering the new streets, uncovering more secrets that continue to make little sense of this strange place. Two days with sunrises, sunsets, and nights that seem like any other.

And yet.

When residents wake on this third day, they will find that much has changed. All around them, wherever they may be, there are signs that time has passed without them. Dust covers everything, indoors and out, even areas that were spotlessly clean seemingly hours ago. The residents themselves are covered as well, dust clinging to their hair, skin, and clothing—

Clothing that they may not have been wearing when they went to sleep. Each resident, regardless of the state they were in previously, is now clad in a pair of white pajamas, with long pants and button-up shirts. Those who thoroughly explored Baneberry Hall will easily recognize these articles as identical to those well-stocked in the decaying great house. On top of this, the clothes they wore from home have disappeared, along with anything else they may have brought with them when they arrived or items from home that have been found within the borders of Mathias.

There is no sign that anyone has entered their place of shelter, nor is there any sign of what may have been done with these items or how they came to be wearing these clothes. The dust all around them is undisturbed, almost as if they had been sleeping there for quite some time, though it seems impossible for such a thing to have occurred naturally.

THE NEW ARRIVALS

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the lawn of Town Hall, at the center of the little town square. They, too, are bereft of any items from home and clothed in the identical white pajamas. There are shops all around them, with houses just beyond, and at first glance, everything seems almost picturesque. Except for the silence that is at times so complete as to be maddening... Welcome to Mathias.

SUMMERTIME

— When summer arrives, so too does an outdoor stand in front of the General Store. Sporting a handpainted sign proclaiming Whateley Farm, the stand is overflowing with a variety of produce: berries, plums, carrots, cabbage, cucumbers, green beans, leeks, onions, peppers, potatoes, zucchini, tomatoes, and garlic bulbs. These do not replace the produce offerings normally found inside the market, but they do behave strangely. The stand replenishes sporadically, sometimes every other day or every five days. There is no discernible pattern to when it replenishes, nor is there any sign of how it came to be there at all.

— With the now-complete reverse change of season, much of the autumn debris has cleared from around town. Only a few stray leaves and fallen branches remain, their crisp colors at odds with the warm summer days. The forest has also cleared of much of the fall detritus, making it easier to both follow the paths and potentially spy things that might be out of the ordinary.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER Summer has arrived in Mathias, bringing with it warm days that average 70°F and comfortably cool nights. The skies are clear throughout the week save for Day 68 when a light rain falls from a grey sky throughout the day.

THE FOG has maintained its new boundaries.
— Residents may now wander the southern stretch of the forest surrounding Mathias Township — it is possible to leave the paths but potentially unwise to do so.
— The fog has also retreated from the western section of town entirely.
— Access to the northern section of the forest is still blocked beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline; this section of fog will urge residents to stay huddled within the town proper by inducing a physical reaction of panic and fear.

DISAPPEARANCES AND DEATHS continue! Max Guevara and Liz Brundy have disappeared, and now that everyone is back together, residents will notice that Yennefer, Number Five, and Tony Stark have also vanished.

ALCOHOL supplies have run dry, save for any dregs that have been squirreled away by individual residents. Moonshine can still be acquired by those in desperate need.

OOC NOTES
UPDATES Don't forget to report updates as they come up! Changes to locations (like toppling a few bookshelves in the library), big plots you have coming up that will affect the game (parties, major property destruction, etc), or exciting discoveries that may tie into the game's mythology (even the things provided by the mod) are very helpful to have in one place so relevant page updates can be made. IC events are also helpful to know about in advance so they can be included in the log write-ups.

MOD STATUS My non-RP life is busy and chaotic and I continue to ask for your forgiveness and understanding as game things continue to be slower, as I cannot promise timely mod responses beyond weekends and even that is not wholly guaranteed.

ITEMS FROM HOME All items from home that characters would normally possess have vanished for this log and will return in the next. This includes clothing and possessions they had when they arrived in Mathias, items that were found in the rain, and items that were found in Baneberry Hall and removed from the property. Items from home that were left behind by other characters no longer in the game have also vanished. (All other items and clothing still remain, it is only items from characters' homes that have disappeared.)

BANEBERRY ITEMS The items from home that were not removed from Baneberry Hall in the last log have vanished from the property. These items will not reappear in the next log. (Please be sure to comment in the appropriate spot on those logs about the state of your character's item for inventory purposes, ie whether they were removed from the property or left behind.)

ACTIVITY CHECK Beginning with June's AC (posted at the start of July), all tags that consist of only dialogue will count as 0.5 points, not just those that occur in an inbox thread — this applies to both AC and AP totals. This adjustment is an extension of what has been in place since the start of the game: that all dialogue-only inbox tags counted for a half-point. Since such tags have occurred regularly in log threads as well, the half-point status is simply being extended to all tags regardless of location in order to be fairer in point distribution. (Examples will be provided in the AC post to assist with proper counting.)

"I was upstairs, yeah," he confirmed softly, glancing at the door again. Okay, he'd eaten and he wasn't activly throwing up but.. Raylan couldn't help but feel a little lost as to what the next step was. No more shine, that was step one.

It didn't matter what had happened to Raylan's face. It would heal and Klaus's inability to argue with him about how it should be classified was embraced.

"Darlin', you got any idea how many of these little things you took? I-- Might have to go find someone who knows a little more about this, I ain't comfortable with you sitting here like this."

"I don't-" He laughs and shakes his head. "What're you talkin'bout? I'm fiiiiine." He sits up, just barely inches from Raylan's face with the force of how fast he'd come up. "Ray-Ray," he presses a hand flat against Raylan's chest. "I'm fine. Seriously." he turns that hand back to himself and slaps his own chest. His voice drops down into a very loud stage-whisper. "I'm an expert."

Maybe he shouldn't have, maybe this was another moment where he was supposed to restrain himself but he was worried and Klaus was close so he wrapped that hand from the back of the couch around the leaner frame to help steady him.

"I'm worried, Kay. You said you'd gotten clean. Most overdoses happen because people take what they used to be used to but their tolerance levels aren't there. Let me go get someone who will at least verify that you're not gonna die. Just tell me how many you took so I got full information, huh?"

He hums a soft noncommittal noise that turns into an amused at the end. "Iiii can't kiss you," he practically sings the words and laughs again. "That sucks...." He bites his lip and lets out a soft, annoyed sound. He wouldn't, even in his currently more-than-inebriated state, do that to Malcolm. But it doesn't stop him from wanting to.

"I did.... but for what?" The laugh that comes this time is a high-pitched titter that tapers at the end, and he shakes his head. "Don't got nothin' to show for it... Dave's... probably still dead. And..." There's that nearly sing-song tone again, "the way the family's luck keeps goin'..." He sighs, shaking his head again. "we're oh-for-two on Apocalypses that my sister was the cause of." He looks sharply up at Raylan, and lifts first three, then after a second, he lowers one finger and then two. "Twice. Third time's the charm, right?"

He lights up suddenly, clapping his hands together with a loud snap; as soon as he speaks, it's clear the whole thing is facetious as all hell. "Oh! Ben is gone. Like– gone-gone. And I haven't– everybody else–" he waves his hand in a vague circle. "they– they lost him years ago... but not meeee. I had him the whooooleee time. And now he's gone. And I- I don't-" He shakes his head, a little more frantically this time, and his face is threatening to crumble the longer he talkes. "I-I don't know how to do that.... I don't- he's gone...

And Five's gone.... a-and Max is gone," his voice breaks for a sob. "Everybody's gone... leaving and... and dead and... I- I can't- I can't reach them. I can't hear them and I can't see them and-" His breaths aren't normal any more, too quick, hitching and coming in gasps now. "I can't- you'll be next... and Doc and Malcolm and...I can't," he shakes his head, "I can't, okay, and-"

He stumbles backward on the couch, out of Raylan's grip. He hasn't thought about it like this since... maybe the first time he really broke down about Ben. That feels like a lifetime ago. Two or three of them. So much has happened since then. He's died since then. Watched so many of his friends die. More than once.

It's stupid, really. A reckless move only a junkie would make, and one Raylan can probably see coming a mile away, but he clamors off the couch and grabs for the bag beside it, digging through it frantically.

He was supposed to be numb to this.
He wants to be numb.

One more.
Maybe two.

It's fine.
He's fine.

The pills clatter inside the bottle when he finally gets his fingers on it and he darts up immediately, fumbling with the lid but it's opened. Pills spill all across the floor, but it doesn't matter. There's more where that came from.

He dumps a handful out, but it's the shaking hand search for what he's looking for in his amalgam pill bottle that ends up stalling him too long.

Raylan huffed a little breath, a sad pull of his smile at the way Klaus said that. "No, you can't." He didn't ask why. He knew why and Klaus was deeply good for it. Being able to say that, to stick to that in his state was a testament to Klaus and Malcolm's friendship.

The way Klaus drifted in and out of that sing-song voice, the lightness of it to protect him from how deep that feeling went was Raylan's guess and it broke his heart a little. More than a little as Klaus continued to derail himself and Raylan found himself shaking his head and starting with a soft-"Hey, hey hey," but Klaus was jerking himself away.

He suddenly had a very bad feeling.

"Klaus," he implored cautioningly, body tensing despite himself.

Whatever you're thinking about doin', don't.

Klaus scrambled and Raylan scrambled after it. Later, he would realize that his feet didn't slip once on the still traction bearing sneakers as he launched himself at the younger man, more concerned about pushing the back away or knocking the bottle out of his hands. The latter of which was the only possible outcome; Klaus was closer but Raylan was sober(ish - what's a few shots in Mathis) and he opted to try to get one of Klaus's wrists in each of his hands and either Raylan's legs around him or Raylan's weight on top of him.

Depending on how much fight the man had in him, it was bound to be one or the other but either way, the Marshal was saying the same thing.

"Klaus, stop it!"

He should have known better. Should have run farther. Anything to give himself a few more seconds. But he didn't. Raylan is on him in an instant and the pills go flying across the floor, the bottle rolling until it hits something that stops it. "Nonono!" he cries out.

Raylan is definitely the stronger of the two, but Klaus has the fuel of a junkie's desperation and he squirms against his hold. He's not Luther, so he has a chance to squirm an arm away from him, reaching blindly for whatever he might be able to grab.

He shoves the two stray pills he managed to get a hand on into his mouth before Raylan can wrench his arm back to being unusable, with a better grip to ensure he can't escape it now. He crunches the tablets in his teeth and swallows the bitter pieces and powder it leaves in his mouth.

Raylan wished that however many Klaus got into his mouth would be the only ones, but he knew full well that if he let the psychic go, it was just going to be a mad dash forwards to get more into his hand, into his mouth. He didn't want to have to handle Klaus the way he would a perp, but he was being given less and less choice.

The Marshal glanced out the window and swore under his breath. He wasn't going to put Klaus into a prone position and hoist him up, fuck up his shoulders, march him around Phillips Drive. All the loss that Klaus had suffered, losing his brother again - the wails that had echoed up the beach with Five's first death haunted him still when he was too drunk and in his feelings. Raylan knew pain. It didn't need to be paraded around.

"I'm sorry Darlin," he muttered against Klaus's head before arching back, getting his mouthpiece as far away from Klaus's ear as he possibly could.

"HEY. ANYONE? JEFF?" Only god knew if that was enough. Maybe it was, Maybe it wasn't. Either way, his accent was tenfold when yelling, all southern charm and long vowels.

Raylan sighed again and went back to the confessional of the moment.. "I can't let you put more of those things in your mouth, Klaus."

He leaned back again. "HELLO? IS ANYONE THERE?
