DAY 063-064
NO MATTER HOW MUCH

“No matter how much suffering you went through,
you never wanted to let go of those memories.”
— Haruki Murakami

At first, in the calm following the storm, nothing seems amiss. When the residents awake, it is to another glorious morning dawning in the unsettling paradise that is Mathias Township. Indeed, it does seem rather glorious that morning, for there is sunshine in a blue sky that has been cleared of any remnant of the angry storm clouds from the day before. But before long, residents will start to notice signs of something being not quite right.

It should be a familiar sensation to most by now.

It begins as just a feeling, a strange hint of something in the air, a nagging voice at the back of the mind. They can't quite put their finger on it but there is something. Something wrong, something that shouldn't be — which is quite a statement in a town where everything shouldn't be. But then the pieces will begin to come together.

A person has gone who ought to be there. This in itself is not a strange occurrence, for many have vanished and then returned, or not. This time, though, it is one person, and then two and three... A dozen people or more have gone, with no trace of their whereabouts to be found.

No resident is alone, thankfully. There are others who also remain: friends, acquaintances, strangers. Others who are just as trapped in this nightmarish place.

As the hours stretch on and residents begin to venture beyond their self-claimed shelters and move about the town, they will find that their fellow captives are not the only things that have vanished. The Chasm is gone as well, the crack in the earth that once stretched across and cut off the western part of town. There is not even the smallest mark to show where it had once been; it has gone so completely that some might wonder if they had merely imagined it.

THE NEW ARRIVALS

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the lawn of Town Hall, at the center of the little town square. There are shops all around them, with houses just beyond, and at first glance, everything seems almost picturesque. Except for the silence that is at times so complete as to be maddening... Welcome to Mathias.

ABOUT THE NEW LOCATIONS

POPPY COTTAGE This bed and breakfast has a sense of casual elegance with the elusive quality of being both sophisticated and comfortable at the same time. Aside from being covered in dust and grime, of course.

PENHEW HOUSE Perhaps familiar to some in Mathias, this grand house is different from any of the others the residents have entered. It looks... new. Fresh. Clean. The usual thick layers of dust and grime that would be caked onto every visible surface are nowhere in sight; this absence may be a relief for some and unsettling to others. There are certainly other unsettling things to be found in this location.

THE OLD CHURCH Barely more than ruins, the property is marked by a crumbled stone outline that has no roof and only partial walls, nothing left inside besides a broken cobblestone floor.

BANEBERRY HALL From the outside, Baneberry Hall seems like your average rich person's house, but one would be mistaken to assume anything of the sort. Even the baneberries that cover the back lawn leading to the forest treeline are deceptive, for they appear harmless but are fatal to any human foolish enough to eat them.

The building is decaying from within. The rooms have begun to rot, from the parlors and libraries still done up in grand and expensive style to the bedrooms that have locks on the doors and bars on the windows. There are restraints in some of those bedrooms, while others are bereft of sharp objects. In the hall closets, there are identical sets of white pajamas of all sizes, and the offices have locked cabinets (that may be picked) full of a rainbow of sedatives (that will not replenish). The names on doors and in logbook lists are all smudged beyond legibility, and all paperwork has been water-damaged and weathered, leaving no indication of who may have been kept in those bedrooms or why. But within each room, there is an item that may be familiar to one of the residents now wandering its halls. As caked in dust and grime as anything else, each item is placed as if it belongs there, as if it might have been there for years. But it couldn't have been... could it?

ABOUT THE ITEMS FROM HOME

Within the unsettling walls of Baneberry Hall, residents may find OBJECTS that are uncomfortably familiar to them. Each item has one singular memory attached to it that, when touched in any way, will be experienced first hand, as if the person receiving it had lived it themselves. This person will endure all of the associated emotions and psychological reactions to the memory that the memory's owner experienced.

— Items may only be found within Baneberry Hall. These items from home are not all in one room or a specific location but instead are scattered throughout the bedrooms. (Only the items on this list are available to this group.)

— Ownership and possession of the item are important elements to this event. While the item is in possession of someone who is not its owner, it will continue to infect all who touch it with the memory that belonged to its owner. The item will also, before long, begin to make the possessor ill, both physically and emotionally uncomfortable and upset. This only occurs until the item is reunited with its owner, or until it is no longer in someone else's possession. (For example, if Person A finds Person B's teddy bear and carries it with them, they will continue to experience the bear's associated memory until they no longer have it in their possession, whether this means they have left it somewhere or it has been returned to Person B.)

— Recipients of memories will retain those memories even after the event has ended.

— When the owner of an item finds their item or has it returned to them, they will also experience the memory once themselves, having it returned to them as if they had just lived those moments again. The memory is only replayed once in their minds and then the memory effect of the object is gone. After this point, the item can be held by the owner or any others without consequence.

— If a person removes an item from its room in Baneberry Hall but does not remove the item from the property entirely, the item will be mysteriously returned to its original location when no one is looking. This is so that people do not have to keep close track of where items are going in the possible changing of hands, so the original owners can still easily locate the item without having to plan in great detail. Once an item is removed from the property, it will not return to its original location even if it is discarded by the possessor before reaching its original owner. Instances such as this should be planned among all involved parties, including the owner of the item.

— Once an item is removed from the property, please comment below so that information may be updated. Items that are not removed by the end of the event may reappear at a later time, so accurate records are essential.

— Before an item's memory is viewed by someone other than the owner, permission must be granted or requested for that memory to be viewed by another character. Because the experience is an uncomfortable one for the other characters, the viewing of memories not their own should ideally be kept to a small number.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER conditions remain fairly typical for early fall: warm days and cool nights. It feels almost like spring arriving except that there fewer red and orange leaves on the ground and more of them oddly returning to the trees and slowly fading to green. It's like watching one of those nature documentaries that have a timelapse of the seasons, only it's going in reverse.

THE FOG has new boundaries.
— Residents may now wander the southern stretch of the forest surrounding Mathias Township — it is possible to leave the paths but potentially unwise to do so.
— The fog has also retreated from the western section of town entirely.
— Access to the northern section of the forest is still blocked beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline; this section of fog will urge residents to stay huddled within the town proper by inducing a physical reaction of panic and fear.

DISAPPEARANCES AND DEATHS continue! Yennefer, Number Five, and Tony Stark have vanished and Ellie is still missing, though this may be difficult to tell with half the town also seemingly having vanished. Will Graham's body may be found within the ruins of the Old Church; he appears to have been frightened to death. (If someone decides to take care of the body, please report it below. For in-game reasons, this does not need to be coordinated across groups.)

ALCOHOL supplies have run dry, save for any dregs that have been squirreled away by individual residents. Moonshine can still be acquired by those in desperate need.

OOC NOTES
NEW MAP Thanks so much to Scy for yet another amazing new map of Mathias!

UPDATES Don't forget to report updates as they come up! Changes to locations (like toppling a few bookshelves in the library), big plots you have coming up that will affect the game (parties, major property destruction, etc), or exciting discoveries that may tie into the game's mythology (even the things provided by the mod) are very helpful to have in one place so relevant page updates can be made. IC events are also helpful to know about in advance so they can be included in the log write-ups.

MOD STATUS For those who don't know, I run a summer program that is set to start in just 2 weeks. We've only recently been given the green light to go ahead in person, so it's a scramble to get everything pulled together in time. My non-RP life is going to be busy and chaotic for the next while and I am thus asking for your forgiveness and understanding as things continue to be slow, as I cannot guarantee timely mod responses beyond weekends, and even that is not guaranteed.

NEXT LOG Because of the aforementioned real-life chaos, the next log will be more relaxed and free form with everyone coming back together again and having a few chill days. It would be very much appreciated if some of the more intense investigations could be saved to take place in future logs, as the new locations that are opening up in this log will remain open in the next few at least and there will be plenty of time to explore all their mysteries.

ITEMS FROM HOME The items from home remaining in Baneberry Hall will not be available past this log, at least not in this form, so if you would like to play with these elements, you should not sleep on this opportunity. More things may show up in the future but, for now, this is the main event.

DW NOTIFS Back at the beginning of the year, the issue of missing email notifs was discussed in a code push plurk by Mark of the DW admin team. For those who missed it, the gist is that the issue with missing notifs is not going to be fixed anytime soon. The issue is so sporadic that the dev team has concluded the only way to possibly fix it is to redo the notification system entirely. This issue does not extend to DW's internal inbox, so short of checking every thread you're involved in, the DW inbox is the best way to make sure you're not missing things.

ACTIVITY CHECK Beginning with June's AC (posted at the start of July), all tags that consist of only dialogue will count as 0.5 comments, not just those that occur in an inbox thread. This applies to both AC and AP totals.

Day 63 - Open

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-10 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Consciousness trickles in slowly, a vague recognition that he's waking up. He doesn't remember falling asleep. He remembers pain, sudden and unexpected, that had cut off what he'd been saying to-

"Ben!" he calls, before he even has a chance to open his eyes. He sits up with a start, expecting to be where he'd fallen on the Minemoon, not yet willing to consider just what he'd felt in that last moment. A part of him knows that he shouldn't have woken up at all.

What he finds is something quite different, and his brow furrows in confusion as he looks around him. Ben isn't here, and nothing at all is familiar.

If no one is there to witness him waking up, they might find him later, looking lost as he walks around trying to make any sense of where he is. He's going to have questions.

That they shouldn't have woken up at all is something these two have in common. It's also something Daisy is trying very hard not to think about — better to focus on the situation at hand than break down over the fact that she died a day ago and will never see anyone she loves again.

With the storm of the day before having cleared, she sets out early in the morning to finally get a proper look at the town. She'd only seen a few glimpses of it before, and if everyone is as stuck here as she's been hearing... Well, time to put her spy skills to work. Wearing jeans and a cream cable-knit sweater that's much too warm for this kind of weather, she moves through the streets toward what appears to be the main road in this town. Putting the beach behind her, she heads inward, passing the boarding house, up to where it looks like some stores are located...

There's no missing that shout. It gets her moving, instinct sending her running toward the voice. When she reaches the stranger who looks as disoriented as she'd felt yesterday, there's concern written across her scraped-up face as she looks down at him. "You okay?"
twowaypath: (Tai03)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-13 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's definitely not Ben, but clearly he got someone's attention. Disoriented is putting it mildly, but he focuses his attention on the person who's just appeared.

"Uh... yeah, I guess so." He's not hurt, at least. Which really is just as confusing as everything else. He gets to his feet, making a note of the solid ground underneath him. That means this is a planet? Or a moon, maybe. That still doesn't tell him much.

"Where am I?" he asks, and hopes that isn't as strange a question as it currently feels.
chuju: (014.)

[personal profile] chuju 2021-06-13 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, sure, start with the hard question. Thanks, new guy.

"That's a... complicated answer," she replies, looking him over to make sure he's at least moving okay. His question is a dead giveaway that this is probably his first time waking up here, and they really have no idea how they were brought to this place. It seems oddly lucky that they didn't arrive in worse states.

"The short version is we don't know," she continues, her tone serious and more matter-of-fact than anything else. "The town's called Mathias and there are a bunch of people here against their will who haven't been able to find a way to leave."
twowaypath: (Tai06)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-13 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Tai can't begin to guess what might be an easier question in this circumstance. He's mostly glad that that one didn't make him sound crazy, though the idea that whatever just happened to him isn't unusual around here its own kind of unsettling.

"I just woke up here. I was somewhere else before." And definitely in a lot worse shape, but he's not going to bring up that part just yet. "Is that what happened to you? And whoever else is here?"
chuju: (122.x)

[personal profile] chuju 2021-06-13 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yep," she answers, adding an extra pop to the P. There's a hint of irritation as she continues, explaining, "I woke up on the beach yesterday, but there are some people who have been here for weeks. Months, even."

The idea of telling him about the Other Her who was here previously never even crosses her mind. Like her extremely recent death, it's something she's purposefully trying not to think about. There's enough weird crap to deal with already without adding her own baggage to the mix.
twowaypath: (Default)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-19 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Huh." It's a lot to take in. Almost too much, really, if he were to consider it on top of the pile of everything else that's been thrown at him over the past few days. But letting himself just get overwhelmed isn't going to do anyone any good.

"I'm Tai, by the way," he tells her, bringing the conversation back to something more manageable as he extends a hand in greeting. Introductions are easy. He can get back to how much everything doesn't make sense later.
chuju: (001.)

[personal profile] chuju 2021-06-20 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
For Daisy, it's not all that difficult to accept waking up in a strange place with no memory of how she got there, nor is it that odd to wake up in a different time than the one she'd just been in. This isn't the first time she's had either of those two things happen, individually or in combination. But she recognizes that not everyone is as prepared to deal with weird shit as she is, most people get to live perfectly normal lives, after all, so she doesn't judge him for perhaps being a little out of sorts.

"Daisy," she replies, reaching out to place her hand in his. "Daisy Johnson. I'm with SHIELD if that means anything to you."
twowaypath: (Tai06)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-20 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Tai, for his part, has experienced plenty of things that other people would find weird. Most of the galaxy still considers the Jedi a myth, after all. But being mysteriously transported somewhere like this hasn't been among those experiences up until now.

"SHIELD?" He shakes his head. "No, that's not familiar." At least, not as more than just a word. "Some kind of defense group, I'm guessing?"
chuju: (123.x)

[personal profile] chuju 2021-06-20 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely not from her world, then. Or at least, not from her world at a time when SHIELD existed. (She can't imagine a time without the organization that had become her home, but given the futures they'd helped avert...)

"Sort of," she replies, crossing her arms in a way that has nothing to do with projecting a strong image and everything to do with how cold she feels. "We're a counterterrorism and intelligence agency tasked with protecting Earth from threats."
twowaypath: (Default)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-20 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Earth," he says in a way that might make it obvious he's pondering whether he's ever heard of such a place. He comes up empty. "That's your planet?"

At least her being from an unfamiliar planet isn't too strange for him. There aren't too many people who would immediately recognise the names of every planet in the galaxy.
chuju: (138.)

[personal profile] chuju 2021-06-20 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
...okay, that puts a new spin on things. She blinks, stares at him for a moment, and then rolls with it.

"It is," she confirms with a nod. "And I'm guessing you've never heard of it, let alone been here before. Welcome, I guess."

What a great impression he's going to have of Earth and Terrans after this. Not that most who know of Earth have a good impression of it; usually they're thought of as a bit primitive and annoying. She's really leaned into the annoying part over the past year, making a name for herself by being a pain in the ass to every being she crosses in the pursuit of information on Fitz. #noregrets
twowaypath: (Default)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-20 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I haven't." Given the apparent surprise at his having to ask, he almost feels like he should apologise for that. Not that he would have any reason to recognise it if it's in a rim sector that he hasn't been to, like he suspects.

It takes a second longer for him to recognise what she means by the rest of what she said, brows furrowing once he does. "Are we on Earth right now?"
chuju: (015.)

[personal profile] chuju 2021-06-20 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"As far as I can tell." Daisy glances around, waving at the buildings surrounding them. "All of this is Earth architecture, and there was a whole bunch of Earth stuff in the house I stayed in last night. Books, movies, kitchenware — all of it's familiar. So either we're on a version of Earth or someone's gone to a lot of trouble to make it look like one."

The real question is which is it. And if it's the latter, who would go to that much trouble.
twowaypath: (Default)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-24 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's interesting to know. All he can say is that nothing looks familiar to him.

"Why would someone make it look that way?" It's pure confusion more than skepticism. He can't really rule out the possibility. But if that was the case, it raises even more questions about how he found himself in a place based on a planet he doesn't even recognise. "And what do you mean by 'a version'?"
chuju: (122.x)

[personal profile] chuju 2021-06-30 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
"I mean, there are people here from different versions of Earth," she clarifies. "Parallel universes where any number of things might be different. On my version, there have been alien invasions and superheroes fighting to protect the planet, but on someone else's Earth, none of those things have happened and, as far as they know, aliens are just fiction."

She takes a deep breath and reaches up to rub at the back of her neck. This isn't something she's ever had to explain before; she's probably doing a real shit job of it.

"As for the other thing — there are plenty of species or organizations who might want to do some sort of psychological experiment of putting people in a familiar environment with unfamiliar stimuli." That's years of listening to Simmons talk, right there. "Or this could be a prison. I don't think anyone actually knows yet what this place is."
twowaypath: (Tai06)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-07-01 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's... a lot to take in. The idea of some other version of the same place existing oddly doesn't seem as strange as somewhere no one is aware of people from other planets. Does Earth even exist in his galaxy?

The part about putting people in a familiar environment earns a thoughtful frown. "If it's supposed to be familiar, it isn't to me." She's probably gathered as much from what he's said already. If that was the intent, then why bring him here? But even then, that doesn't prove this isn't still some kind of strange experiment.
twowaypath: (Tai03)

Day 64 - Closed to Bucky

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-10 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
As someone sensitive to the Force, this is certainly not the first time Tai has had a vision. But what strikes him when he holds these strange bits of metal in his hand is something especially intense. He's flooded with memories, completely unfamiliar but very real, and left overcome with emotion in the wake of them. It takes a moment for him to find reality enough to let go of them again, dropping them back onto the table where he'd found them.

The grip of the vision fades when he lets go, but the impression of it lingers. It's so out of context that he can't make much sense of it, but he knows better than to just dismiss it. A vision like that must mean something. Still, he doesn't think he needs to see or feel any more of it, so he leaves the object that caused it where it lies.

It's some time later when he catches sight of a man he hasn't yet met, but who strikes him as familiar nonetheless. The vision he'd had comes back to mind, and Tai realises that's where he knows him from.

"Uh... excuse me." Tai approaches just a tad awkwardly. Visions are one thing, but he's never been in a position before to tell a complete stranger he'd seen things about them.
exsto: (74)

[personal profile] exsto 2021-06-18 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
The day before had Bucky reeling a bit. Mathias had outdone itself, it felt like; the disappearance of over half the people in town, the chasm filling in and a few new locations where the mystery of the place only became more prominent. Not to mention that there were items from people's worlds that were turning up and with them, memories. Personal ones.

He had hoped that nothing of his own turned up, but then there was a voice that beckoned for his attention. It felt like more than just a question of where one might find something and when Bucky turns and sees a face he doesn't recognize, he can't help but look wary.

"Yeah?" he answers suspiciously.
twowaypath: (Tai01)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-19 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Tai can't really be surprised by that apparent wariness. This place is unsettling enough to begin with, and if what he'd seen was the other man's memory, he has his own reasons for treating people with suspicion. That vision had been real enough that Tai can still feel the fear and violation of having whoever those people were do things against his will.

He keeps his stance relaxed, nonthreatening. If anything, he looks almost apologetic.

"This might sound strange, but I found something, earlier. I think it might have been yours."
exsto: (117)

[personal profile] exsto 2021-06-24 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
The other man barely gets the words out before Bucky's suspicions became a reality and he really wasn't sure how to feel about that. What item was it? What memory did this other man see? Did it honestly matter when everything in his life was horrifying in one way or another?

Blue eyes dart off, then flit back to the other man when he briefly realizes he doesn't recognize him. Mathias had brought in someone new. Poor guy.

Bucky opens his mouth, but closes it and swallows thickly. "Oh yeah? What did you find? And how do you know it might be mine? I've never met you before."

A beat and he continues with an obvious note of uncertainty. "Have I?"
twowaypath: (Default)

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-24 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
That tacked on question interrupts Tai's thoughts as he's still working out how to answer the former ones. He shakes his head.

"You haven't." Tai can at least say that much for certain. He'd never seen the man before that strange vision. Given what he's picked up about this place so far, they've probably never even been on the same planet before now.

"It was a couple pieces of metal on a chain. They had writing on them." He hadn't read that too carefully, all things considered. The vision took over the moment he touched them, and after he dropped them, he hadn't been too interested in touching them again. But he remembers seeing something that looked like a name. "James Barnes... Is that you?"
twowaypath: (Tai06)

Day 64 - Open

[personal profile] twowaypath 2021-06-10 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
After having caught on that some objects have appeared that belong to people and come with memory visions, he's going to be taking a more thorough look around Baneberry Hall to see if there's anything of his laying around. There isn't, but if anyone wants further memory shenanigans or just wants to find him there, this is the time.
