He earned a half hearted smile with that quip. He didn't pry and that was reassuring. Too often she was reminded of how decent he was and how much she didn't want him to see her past. Samuel had at least been a thief and a murderer himself. She didn't feel wildly unsuited for him, even if his feelings for her never were reciprocated. Doc, whatever his past, was more on a pedestal for his kindness than anything else.

Kindness she did not feel entitled to.

She held up the picture of her husband and his son, letting him see the token before setting it on the counter. I need to get rid of this.
