He knows that face. He has seen it many times before, worn by other people. It troubles him, but at the same time he does not want to pry, to drive her away because of his concern. He cares little for what makes her wear that face, only that he thinks it ill-suited for her to be wearing it, but he cannot be sure if she would see it the same way.
