RECOMMENDED ♫ Deadly Avenger "Creeper"

DAY 062
THAT MOMENT OF EXPERIENCE

“A story has no beginning or end: arbitrarily one
chooses that moment of experience from which to
look back or from which to look ahead.”
— Graham Greene

The day begins like any other might. The clouds occasionally part to give glimpses of the sun, offering a bit of hope that the hours might pass without incident. It is a hope that is soon dashed, however, for midday brings with it a suddenly darkening sky. Those near the beach will be able to see the ocean churning as all light seems to be bled from the day, the sky darkening into a purplish-black more quickly than is natural, the process taking a mere ten minutes from start to finish.

And then it begins.

The rain is so heavy and pouring so fast that the ground cannot take it all in, sending rivers down streets and leaving lawns as lakes. The winds blow in gusts so strong that they could knock someone over, and the lightning that arcs brightly through the sky is immediately followed by thunder that shakes the town to its core, the tremors almost reminiscent of the earthquakes that plagued the town only days ago.

For some, the storm will be another nuisance of mother nature, forcing them to remain wherever they were before its sudden approach. But for others, it will be far more than that, for this storm is seeking revenge on those who sought to destroy the town. Destruction will rain down and it will not stop until its vengeance is satisfied.

THE NEW ARRIVALS

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the beach near The Grey Gull. It's a bit chilly out with their wet clothes, but surely there's something to help warm them inside the restaurant. If nothing else, the cowboys' homemade moonshine should do the trick.

ABOUT THE STORM

The storm will begin at midday and last until late into the night, only calming in the early hours of the morning. The heavy rain will flood the streets, though it will not be enough to flood the buildings themselves (except as noted below), and the winds and thunder will shake the town with such strength that it will almost seem as if the town is trying to tear itself apart.

But this is not a simple storm. For those residents who took part in any way in the destruction of the Town Hall, History Museum, or Stoker Park house, they will find the storm will destroy their shelter in some fashion. This can include broken windows, caved-in roofs, flooding from the rain, or even lightning striking the building. The details are up to player choice but something will be damaged by the storm.

— All damage to buildings will be repaired by the dawn of the following day as if it never happened at all. There is no way to witness this process taking place.
— If a resident is sheltering in a shared living space with others who did not take part in the destruction of the town, you may choose to have only your character's section of that location damaged. However...
— The storm's focus will follow the resident if they move to another area or location, meaning that the new location will also suffer damage in some way.
— Only those who took part in the town destruction in some way will be targeted by the storm, but innocent bystanders can be caught up in the situation as well.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER conditions remain fairly typical for early fall: warm days and cool nights. It feels almost like spring arriving except that there fewer red and orange leaves on the ground and more of them oddly returning to the trees and slowly fading to green. It's like watching one of those nature documentaries that have a timelapse of the seasons, only it's going in reverse.

THE FOG has retreated from some areas!
— Residents may now wander the southern stretch of the forest surrounding Mathias Township — it is possible to leave the paths but potentially unwise to do so.
— The fog has also retreated farther into the western section of town, now stretching across town between Stine Road and Shelley Drive. This has revealed the Chasm in the earth that stretches from one side of town to the other between Stine and Hill Lane.
— Access to the northern section of the forest is still blocked beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline; this section of fog will urge residents to stay huddled within the town proper by inducing a physical reaction of panic and fear.

DISAPPEARANCES continue! Ellie has vanished while others have returned.

ALCOHOL supplies have run dry, save for any dregs that have been squirreled away by individual residents. Moonshine can still be acquired by those in desperate need.

OOC NOTES
NEW MAP Thanks so much to Scy for this amazing new map of Mathias!

PROJECT HELP Your mod needs help with some projects!

PART II The next part of the log series will be have characters divided up (by OOC choice, not IC) into groups, so be sure to sign up for one asap. Anyone who doesn't make the deadline will be automatically assigned to an available spot.

UPDATES Don't forget to report updates as they come up! Changes to locations (like toppling a few bookshelves in the library), big plots you have coming up that will affect the game (parties, major property destruction, etc), or exciting discoveries that may tie into the game's mythology (even the things provided by the mod) are very helpful to have in one place so relevant page updates can be made. IC events are also helpful to know about in advance so they can be included in the log write-ups.

MOD STATUS The usual reminder that it's just Amy steering this ship, so things will are going to be pretty slow for a while. Apologies in advance, and please don't feel shy about pestering me if you're stuck waiting for something. (All outstanding matters will be taken care of in the next few days!)

Morning 062 - Open

Well, it's a morning. Can't be sure that it's a good one, but it's a morning, all right.

It's doesn't look too bad out there, all things considered, so Eliot ventures out for a bit of exercise. It's an early morning run as the day breaks, and about an hour later, a few moments to close out his exercising with meditation and tai chi on the beach. It's probably the most relaxed he's going to be all day. The time loop wasn't that bad and the general lack of truly dangerous things happening has given him both a chance to breathe, and also an unsettling worry that bad things were going to come back any second now.

He's probably just worrying too much, that's all.

A bit later, he takes a walk around the town to see if there's anything he can scrounge up at the general store, and wanders over to the Grey Gull to enjoy cooking for anyone that might show up and catch up on any local happenings he might have missed.

Midday 062 - closed to Hardison and Parker - cw: references to ptsd likely

The first thing he thinks that this is happening again.

The way the sky starts to get angry and become more than what a storm should ordinarily look like makes him think that fire is going to pour out of the sky and follow him. And this time, it's not just him he's worried about. It's them. He's on edge and watching the sky pour even as it's water, not fire, and the thunder is so great that it seems like the world is coming apart at the seams.

It's different when he's got people to protect.

He was at the Grey Gull when the sky rips open and once he's certain that fire isn't coming down, the next thing he has to do is make sure Hardison and Parker are safe. He's not sure if they're out but getting to home base is his priority, and where they'd most likely head if they're in danger, he figures.

What he doesn't realize, as he dashes from house to house, ducking under eaves and into any unlocked residence, is that the storm seems to be following him. Like a ridiculous cartoon.

It only becomes apparent that this is a thing that's really happening when he makes his final dash into 819 Stoker Park, and the house that he was ducking under which was being dashed to pieces and practically flooded suddenly is fine and then their house, as soon as he gets in, starts rocking and rolling.

A window cracks and water starts leaking as soon as he slams the door closed, the walls rattling but it seems to be concentrated on his side of the house.

"What the hell...?"

...is it really just focusing on him!? He shoots a look out the window and sure enough, his last shelter seems to be experiencing some kind of reprieve.

...fantastic.

Well. He certainly can't stay here. He opens up the door again, ready to bolt at a moment's notice, the wind and rain lashing around him.

Parker's been watching the rain from the safety of the windows. Though the whole sky is overcast, the storm seems oddly...unbalanced, with some places along the street getting a steady but manageable downpour, while others are hit so hard that roofs collapse and windows crack. But it's all detached curiosity until she notices one especially harsh downpour actually moving down the street, following...a figure.

One that's headed right for their house.

There's a roll of thunder, the sound of broken glass from the living room, and Parker stiffens, dashing across the room and throwing the door open to see a very wet, very angry, very about to leave again -

"Eliot!"

She runs to stop him, slipping on the wet floor and narrowly avoiding crashing into him and sending them both sprawling in the process.

As no saying ever goes, one confused housemate deserves another.

The sound of the window cracking lined up with the storm taking a turn for the worse was enough to get Hardison moving. Sounds like a job for duct tape and prayers. Parker's tone when she yells Eliot's name is enough to have him half-tripping in his haste to get out to the living room faster.

Bright side: no one is bleeding, everyone's home, good for the nerves in this weather. Downside: Eliot looks like a very upset drowned rat and Parker looks like an upset Parker. Can Mathias, mayhaps, just chill again?

"Ay! Door closed, people!"

He's already making his way over, possibly to practice what he's preaching in hopes of keeping the floor from getting even wetter.

"Y'all adrenaline junkie, wanna feel the wind, Midwest white people storm-watchin'-ass-- give a man a heart attack--"

The prospect that either one of his smart and competent once-in-a-lifetime skill level teammates would be intending to actually go back out into that stormy mess, that eludes him entirely in this brief moment. It doesn't compute. It's awful out there so obviously that simply can't be what's happening. Occam's Razor has always been Hardison's natural enemy.

Of course.

Of course they're here--good that they're here and safe, not good that they're in danger from his proximity--

--and there goes Parker slipping and sliding, and Hardison making his way over and matching his level of usual grumpiness which is quite impressive, really--

Eliot holds his hands out, trying to get them to stop.

"No--look, stay back--stay there! The damn storm is following' me!"

He's yelling, angry, stressed--drenched, hair plastered to his face, and backing up, into the storm, though the door. It's loud, the wind picking up, strong enough to rattle the house.

"I don't know--I don't know what's goin' on, just that it's followin' me so I gotta get outta here! Don't get near me!"

And with that, he turns around and starts out the door.

Of course it's following him. Parker had figured that out when she'd seen the storm moving down the street and over (practically into) their living room. All the more reason he should stay where he is, with them.

"You can't leave!

He looks half-drowned already, hair and clothing soaked, but she doesn't hesitate before grabbing onto his hand and pulling with all her strength, dragging him bodily back into the room.

"Where would you go? It'll just follow you out there, too!"
ofthegeek: (can you believe this guy)

[personal profile] ofthegeek 2021-05-31 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. Occam's Razor strikes again. Hardison has a new reason to be grateful for Parker's speedy reflexes every day.

As he finishes crossing the room, he reaches for one of Eliot's shoulders, tries to help pull him back.

"Eliot, get your ass-! How do we figure this out if you're not here to figure? Huh?"

The house is already cosmetically kind of turning into a write-off anyway. At least if Eliot's here, Eliot's here.

He's not sure what he was expecting, because they wouldn't, wouldn't they? They didn't leave in DC, and they're not leaving now. Or letting him leave, anyway.

Both Parker and Hardison yank him back and he stumbles back into the house, another gust of wind and blast of rain whirling around him aggressively, as if mocking his entry back into the house.

"But you're gonna be--" He waves a hand, sputtering, pointing out at the storm.

"If that thing is after me, you're in danger by bein' around me! What if it brings the house down around us?!"

It's his job to protect you two. This ain't protectin'!

"What if it brings something down around you?"

With Hardison holding him firmly, Parker darts in front of Eliot, putting herself between him and the door. She shivers with the cold, staring at him with wide, worried eyes as the wind and rain whip at her hair, soaking her back. She looks small, easily pushed aside if he really wanted to get out, but she's not budging.

"What if something happens and we're not there with you?"
ofthegeek: (id like you to think this over again)

[personal profile] ofthegeek 2021-06-05 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
In the usual fashion, Parker's questions are very direct. And in this case, extremely on point and saving them a lot of trouble getting to the point.

What if something happens and we're not there with you, and Hardison's grip on Eliot tightens reflexively. Been there. Done that. The not being there and the not knowing until it was too late. The hearing about it secondhand from someone who did find Eliot, and did know about it.

He is, surprising no one, not a fan.

"If we gotta keep moving, then we'll keep moving. But the solo Rambo act stuff just got voted all the way off the table."

There's Parker, in the door, refusing to budge. Shivering.

There's Hardison, holding him back, the squeeze on his shoulder not going unnoticed.

He doesn't deserve this, never did, but here they are, all the same.

Something crumbles in Eliot's heart of hearts and his face softens, something in his eyes reveals the depths of how much this means to him. Come on, he's the one who's supposed to protect you, not the other way around. The rain and wind lashes his hair and plasters it on his face as he pauses.

"All right," he nods, slowly. They'll face this thing, together.

"It's focused on me, which means it's probably gonna be strongest around me. Let's head to another house and try to find someplace sturdy to take shelter. And don't--stay too close to me. You might not get the worst of it."

[personal profile] sharker 2021-06-07 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Finding another house to wait it out in sounds fine to Parker, as long as they're all going together. She nods slightly, glancing at Hardison for confirmation.

But Eliot's plea to stay away from him is, obviously, completely out of the question. She rolls her eyes with a dismissve tsk and skips up next to him, only to slide her arm snugly through his, grinning.

"I like the rain."

And she glances impatiently back at Hardison. "Come on, let's go!"

He nods back. At this point, they're well and truly pot committed.

Being abducted to a supernatural murder town just plain sucks. The things they have to do as a family unit, honestly.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm getting my shoes, woman. One minute and counting, don't get tornadoed without me."

Which is to say, BRB, he's not doing this without shoes. Every man has his limit.
