A BRIEF REPRIEVE

Residents awake to a peaceful morning with the sun shining and earth remaining still. There is no unsettling shaking to rouse them at dawn, and time has continued moving onward as they slept. Whatever state they were in the night before, they remain that way now, for good or for bad.

On the surface, there seems to be little lasting effect on the tiny town from that strange series of days, save for the memories of any traumatic experiences residents may have faced — but there are always consequences within Mathias. The perpetrators of acts against the town are tormented by nightmares of those acts being used against them, and those who did not raise a hand to stop those acts of destruction may yet face consequences of their own. For now, however, the unwilling townspeople should do their best to rest and recover from the disturbing ordeals of late, for this reprieve from the madness shall surely be shortlived.

THE NEW ARRIVALS
The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the beach near The Grey Gull. It's a bit chilly out with their wet clothes, but surely there's something to help warm them inside the restaurant. They may even find some alcohol within — and not just the cowboys' homemade moonshine.

CONDITIONS UPDATE

— THE HISTORY MUSEUM has not fared well with the return of "normal" time. The once esteemed wooden building is now a charred ruin, the recent fire leaving behind little of the contents within for study. The structure is unstable and it is not wise to venture into the ruins for long.

— THE WEATHER conditions remain fairly typical for early fall: warm days and cool nights. It feels almost like spring arriving except that there fewer red and orange leaves on the ground and more of them oddly returning to the trees and slowly fading to green. It's like watching one of those nature documentaries that have a timelapse of the seasons, only it's going in reverse.

— THE FOG has retreated from some areas!
— Residents may now wander the southern stretch of the forest surrounding Mathias Township — it is possible to leave the paths but potentially unwise to do so.
— The fog has also retreated farther into the western section of town, now stretching across town between Stine Road and Shelley Drive. This has revealed the Chasm in the earth that stretches from one side of town to the other between Stine and Hill Lane.
— Access to the northern section of the forest is still blocked beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline; this section of fog will urge residents to stay huddled within the town proper by inducing a physical reaction of panic and fear.

— DEATHS & DISAPPEARANCES continue! Max Guevara has vanished into the fog. Claire Novak's body can be spotted on Day 059 facedown at the bottom of the Chasm between Hill and Stine, near Phillips Drive; by the morning of Day 060, her body will be gone. (Attempts may be made to reach her body but will likely not end well for those involved. Such attempts should be reported under Exploration.)

— ALCOHOL is still in Mathias! Just barely. (Supply is running very low after recent town events.) A small stock of beer and cheap wine may be found at the General Store, and some homes may have a small store of alcohol in the fridge or pantry. The Grey Gull was also restocked with its lower-end offerings of a variety of alcohol types. (Alcohol does not replenish as food does.)

"It's..." She trails off as she takes the cup from Klaus. A long story? It sounds so cliche, but it's true. This place may be strange, it may have stolen her from her bed in the dead of night, but it's... is it on the same level as Deegan?

Caitlin reaches for some sugar and cream, starting to dress her coffee before snagging a cookie from the plate Malcolm offers. "I was already having a weird few days before waking up on the beach today. Not that most people wouldn't already consider my daily life 'weird,' but this was extra weird."

"Well, I grew up as a childstar superhero, so I'm probably more qualified for a daily life that's weird to most, than- well- most people." He nods, very matter-of-factly.

"Childstar... superhero?" Her tone and her wide eyes probably show her confusion and struggling belief. Children superheroes. Sure. That's probably something that would happen. Nora has Barry's powers, so it would stand to reason that other metas would pass their altered genetics and abilities down.

She blinks and clears her throat, stirring her coffee. "You have powers?"

"Used to- presumably still do, because I don't feel any different, and it seems like the kinda thing you'd notice, you know? But I can't access it here. Which is really annoying, I was just really get into using them..." He purses his lips, then belatedly realizes he hasn't told her what he does.

And given she seems so chill in the superpower department, that seems like the sort of person who could handle just having it dropped on them. "I can talk to ghosts. They're very loud, usually, but... since I got here, I haven't heard a single one calling for me." He sounds more unnerved by that than shows on his face.

Ghosts. Talking to ghosts sounds unnerving all on its own, especially for a child. But like other metas? Other superpowered people? However they may have been called where he's from. He seems to have adjusted to them. Even miss them? And that's a feeling Caitlin can relate to all too well. Her expression shifts to something knowing, something perhaps too empathetic with what he's feeling.

At this point, she hasn't heard Frost at all since waking up.

She inhales sharply before speaking. "Are there other people like you? Other people with powers? Are they experiencing... are they disconnected from their abilities too?"

Hopefully, she doesn't sound too overinvested.

No kidding, but try telling his Dad that.

He doesn't miss the vague hint of understanding in her eyes, but he doesn't comment on it for now. Answering her questions is much easier-- sorry, Malcolm, but to be fair, he's more a lead on this topic than you, buddy.

"Yeah, this place likes people with powers, but it also likes blocking access, or severely limiting them, too. My brother can't do half of the spatial-timeline fuckery he can usually do, and there's been other magic-users that don't have the kind of power they normally do."

She nods, perhaps a little too eagerly. Blocking access, severely limiting them. She hasn't really tested them, but this might explain why she hasn't heard her other half. What if she's totally blocked? In the past, losing access to Frost meant losing access to her powers. That means... that means she could be without them here.

Please don't let that be the case. She just got Frost back, they've developed a way to talk to each other, she doesn't want this. She doesn't need his.

She quickly chews and swallows the bite of cookie she'd taken. "Spatial-timeline?" Her head tilts to one side. "Your brother is a teleporter and time traveler?"

He nods. "Yup... and he's a lot older than he looks." He laughs a little, he knows it's a point of contention for Five, but it's never not at least a little funny.

He doesn't even skip a beat in answering her question. Doesn't even ask how she guesses what 'spatial-timeline fuckery' means. So either he's guessed that she's a scientist (probably not likely, it's not as if she's asked anything that's particularly science-y) or that she has experience with people with powers. The latter seems most likely.

Caitlin raises an eyebrow. "How old does he look, and how old is he really?" And how did it happen, she wonders silently.

She'll learn pretty quick that Klaus is an absolute open-book about these things. They were just part of his every day normal growing up, even if he did grow to try and run from it all as he got older and more fearful of what he could do. He did a lot to try to escape it, for a long time, but eventually he came into his own with it.

"Fourteen, and fifty-eight, respectively." He doesn't even wait for her to ask how before barreling into the explanation of his own accord. "When we were kids, he got into a fight with our Dad about how he wasn't ready for time travel. He tried to prove him wrong, and got stuck in the bad-end-future. He spent all that time trying to get home, and when he finally did, something went wrong in his calculations and he just... got thrown back into his fourteen year old body because...something-something, science stuff I never really followed. But...y-yeeaahh...?" He holds both hands up in a wide shrug. "Welcome to being a Hargreeves?"

The way he's just so casual about all of it is oddly refreshing. People could get so defensive when discussing their powers and how they worked. Some held back and kept things secrets. (That never ended well, and she could speak from experience about that. Sometimes she might wonder how or if things would have turned out differently if she hadn't kept her powers a secret.) But Klaus is just... open. Here you are, here's how it goes, etc etc. She likes it.

The vague description of his brother's powers intrigue Caitlin. Not ready for time travel. Something going wrong in the calculations. Ending up in his previous body. It's a bit foreign-sounding. "Could be something like two versions of himself aren't able to exist at the same point in the timeline," she muses. "My friend who can travel through time, it doesn't seem so complicated for him."

"Something like that." That sounded kind of like what Five had said before. That was three years ago for him, though, he could be wrong. "Ohhh, so you know someone who can timejump? That's so weird, I've never seen anyone else besides Five who could--"

His eyes go wide for a moment. "Wait. There's others out there like us..." Lila... the other forty-something they'd just realized existed before they ended up here. "The name Reginald Hargreeves mean anything to you?" What if she, or at least her friend, is one of the others like Klaus and his siblings?

“I don’t have any super powers,” Malcolm adds helpfully. “Like. At all.” He offers her the plate of cookies again.

"You have the power of deduction on your side," he points out, one finger pointing in his friend's direction. "And at the level you do it, it's basically a superpower."

Malcolm laughs, ducking his head. “Okay, well... I mean. My boss does call me Sherlock Freud.”

He grins at the reaction he earned from him-- he's cute when he's trying to be modest. "Seriously?" He can't help the laugh that comes with that information. "Amazing."
