A BRIEF REPRIEVE

Residents awake to a peaceful morning with the sun shining and earth remaining still. There is no unsettling shaking to rouse them at dawn, and time has continued moving onward as they slept. Whatever state they were in the night before, they remain that way now, for good or for bad.

On the surface, there seems to be little lasting effect on the tiny town from that strange series of days, save for the memories of any traumatic experiences residents may have faced — but there are always consequences within Mathias. The perpetrators of acts against the town are tormented by nightmares of those acts being used against them, and those who did not raise a hand to stop those acts of destruction may yet face consequences of their own. For now, however, the unwilling townspeople should do their best to rest and recover from the disturbing ordeals of late, for this reprieve from the madness shall surely be shortlived.

THE NEW ARRIVALS
The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the beach near The Grey Gull. It's a bit chilly out with their wet clothes, but surely there's something to help warm them inside the restaurant. They may even find some alcohol within — and not just the cowboys' homemade moonshine.

CONDITIONS UPDATE

— THE HISTORY MUSEUM has not fared well with the return of "normal" time. The once esteemed wooden building is now a charred ruin, the recent fire leaving behind little of the contents within for study. The structure is unstable and it is not wise to venture into the ruins for long.

— THE WEATHER conditions remain fairly typical for early fall: warm days and cool nights. It feels almost like spring arriving except that there fewer red and orange leaves on the ground and more of them oddly returning to the trees and slowly fading to green. It's like watching one of those nature documentaries that have a timelapse of the seasons, only it's going in reverse.

— THE FOG has retreated from some areas!
— Residents may now wander the southern stretch of the forest surrounding Mathias Township — it is possible to leave the paths but potentially unwise to do so.
— The fog has also retreated farther into the western section of town, now stretching across town between Stine Road and Shelley Drive. This has revealed the Chasm in the earth that stretches from one side of town to the other between Stine and Hill Lane.
— Access to the northern section of the forest is still blocked beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline; this section of fog will urge residents to stay huddled within the town proper by inducing a physical reaction of panic and fear.

— DEATHS & DISAPPEARANCES continue! Max Guevara has vanished into the fog. Claire Novak's body can be spotted on Day 059 facedown at the bottom of the Chasm between Hill and Stine, near Phillips Drive; by the morning of Day 060, her body will be gone. (Attempts may be made to reach her body but will likely not end well for those involved. Such attempts should be reported under Exploration.)

— ALCOHOL is still in Mathias! Just barely. (Supply is running very low after recent town events.) A small stock of beer and cheap wine may be found at the General Store, and some homes may have a small store of alcohol in the fridge or pantry. The Grey Gull was also restocked with its lower-end offerings of a variety of alcohol types. (Alcohol does not replenish as food does.)

Same here, man. [ He grins and reaches out to shake Elijah's hand easily enough. ] Alec Hardison. I probably would've done the introductions thing sooner, but it's been hella weird around here lately.

( but he understands what hardison means. it has been especially strange here lately what with the repetition of time and all. elijah's had to change his thoughts on what's doing this because there are no witches that strong, not even original witches. )

But yes, it has been. I hadn't even been aware there were so many new people around the Boarding House. It's good to meet you under the circumstances. How are you doing with everything?

Yeahhhh, I can't un-say the 'lately', you know? Worked better as a, just like mentally, it worked better as a whole statement.

Which I guess is pretty on point with how it is being here, anyway. This place is scary, it's haunted, and I haven't gotten to do something cool with a smartphone since before I got here 'cause we're up in the nineties. But I dunno, I think I'm getting used to dealing with the tech withdrawal part? And I appreciate you asking, my dude, I mean that.

This place is scary, it is haunted and I've been here for several weeks now and I haven't seen any end of that. It's quite frustrating.

Frustrating is a good word. It keeps those punches coming.

I'm just like, there's way less terrible ways to set people up to get all camaraderie... ized. Yeah, I'll be tight with someone if we went through it, that's fine, but I also like being tight with someone because we did something fun that don't give us nightmares.

( elijah snickers because he agrees. he agrees wholeheartedly. he's not even the type to want to bond with people but he'd prefer it be something where they weren't trapped in some town that regularly tried to kill them. )

I'm trying to think of one enjoyable thing that's happened here and I'm coming up blank.

Sometimes, we can sleep through the night without horrible things happening?

Can't even do it glass half-full right now, huh? Everyone shows up and gets busted down to thimbles. We ever figure out who's on this big "man behind the curtain" trip, I'm thinking class-action lawsuit.

I would love to know who's behind all this but after a few weeks of being here and having no clue?

( elijah's really beginning to wonder if that's going to happen. maybe they're all hallucinating or something similar. every single guess he's had has been wrong. )

Nah. The supernatural stuff's way fictional back home. People who lean into it are usually trying to make some money off it.

Considering the circumstances of your arrival and the things I'm sure you've heard, it would be hard not to believe that the supernatural is real.

Yeah. Yeah, kinda got the crash course on that my first day in town. Got here right on time for everyone cleaning up after the invisible deadly monsters, so.

[ Saw dead Eliot, great way to get scarred for life, saw respawned Eliot, great way to have no idea what to do with anything. The streets were bloody and stuff. 0/10.

In some ways, it set a really high awful-supernatural-thing bar right away. ]

Oh yes, those things. Those were...not enjoyable.

( that's an understatement. those were very, very horrible and he wishes to not deal with them again. )

Were you hurt when that was occurring? Or were you one of the ones who was stuck inside without the possibility of getting out?

[ He straight up does a little finger-gun of acknowledgement at "not enjoyable." He didn't even have to be around, the secondhand accounts all speak for themselves. ]

Showed up the next morning. It, uh. It turned out a friend of mine got caught up in that, though. [ The cool and mild way to put it. ] Did not know there was a part where people got trapped inside of anywhere. So that just took the whole concept way up on the not enjoyable scale.

That's what happened to me.

( elena had been caught out in it while he'd been stuck in the boarding house, unable to do anything but wait and watch. )

And while I'm not the type to brag, I should have been able to get myself out from inside a building. I'm strong enough that a door or a window would not be able to hold me.

( and yet. )

Ahh, brag away. I'm a supporter of bragging rights. Everybody's got some.

Bad night for a claustrophobe, though, huh.

And the worst of it is that I don't think those creatures were killed either which means they could come back at anytime.
