DAY 037
THE DEAD RETURN

“The only reason for time is so that everything
doesn't happen at once.” —Albert Einstein

The dead return to Mathias forever changed by their experiences. Waking along the beach, near the tree line, or among the graves, they will find that their bodies are not as they remember them. They are whole again and not torn to shreds by the shadow creatures that cannot be described, but they are also not as they were before the Hunt. These residents will find, so strangely, that their bodies are in the physical state in which they first arrived in Mathias — any injuries or recovery they have made since their initial arrival no longer exists, as if their time in Mathias has simply been a horrible nightmare. Except they all now carry a last reminder of the Hunt with them: spiderweb-thin healed scars marking their injuries from the Hunt. Those who were injured by fire in the other realm also carry those burns with them.

The dead are not the only things that have returned to Mathias. Inexplicably, fall is back, with the temperature finally reaching above freezing and snow falling from trees to reveal beautiful autumnal colors. As the sun rises higher in the lightly cloudy sky and the day warms, the snow begins rapidly melting, puddles growing in the slowly revealed grass and little rivers forming in the streets. And with that snow comes the frozen blood from the deaths to the Hunt, tinting the street river on Phillips Drive a sickening shade of red.

Another oddity that residents will notice: houses with broken windows from the encounter with the fog on Day 015 have now been completely repaired, though any boards put in place are still there somehow. A small bit of good news, at least? And truly, how kind of Mathias to clean up its own mess.

Finally, alcohol is back. Enjoy in moderation, friends, for more will not be arriving the following morning.

THE NEW ARRIVALS

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the beach near The Grey Gull. It's quite chilly out with their wet clothes, but surely there's something to help warm them inside the restaurant. Indeed, their timing is perfect, for alcohol has finally returned to Mathias Township — and not just the cowboys' homemade moonshine.

DAY 038-039
THE CHANGE OF SEASON

The continued warm weather proves that the unseasonable shift of the previous day was not merely a fluke. Once again, the sun rises and brings with it a temperature that feels almost spring-like, save for the fact that each day there seem to be more and more leaves on the trees in hues of red and orange. For those who have been in Mathias for some time, this new type of weird may be almost normal at this point, but newer arrivals will likely find it quite odd.

The gently trickling river running along Phillips Drive is still somewhat pink in color as the snow continues to melt and refreeze each night. By Day 040, the bloody snow will finally be gone completely, though the relief will be... short-lived.

DAY 040
THE BLINDING WHITE

In the late morning of Day 040, when the sun is visible through patchy greyish clouds, the fog sweeps into town like a like a tidal wave. It moves in quickly and without warning, not from the waterfront but the forest, cascading through every street in a thick wave of white. Rather than a soft blanket enveloping the town, it is a heavy weight pressing down, blotting out the sky in a way that almost feels suffocating, for none can see further than their outstretch hand.

Those outside when it rolls in are left wandering blind, stumbling toward shelter as you're unable to even see your feet beneath you, let alone any obstacles in your path. Perhaps you call out for help, hoping for another voice to guide you toward shelter or simply another living soul. Or perhaps you were lucky enough to already be inside when the fog descended, quickly closing doors and windows to keep it from creeping in.

Unlike the last time the fog swept into the town, residents who encounter it are not immediately killed. Instead, they are simply disoriented, possibly losing their sense of time and place, and it is only after prolonged exposure that they will begin to feel off. A sense of being ill will cling to them if they are in the fog for too long, including dizziness, lightheadedness, or nausea — the time it takes to manifest varies from person to person, as does the duration it will last after leaving the fog.

By nightfall, the fog still has not dissipated.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER conditions are fairly typical for late fall: chilly "sweater weather" days and nights that can dip just below freezing. You don't want to be outside without a coat, but it won't kill anyone if they bundle up. Probably.

THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the western section of town, beginning just past Hill Lane, before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be between Hill and Stine Road. Venturing into the fog blocking these areas is ill-advised.

DISAPPEARANCES continue. Castiel and Sam Winchester have vanished, and Dean Winchester has not returned with the others after his death during the Hunt.

THE GRAVEYARD has now seen around a dozen burials, both below and above ground. With the weather warming, though, something may need to be done about the handful of temporary graves aboveground...

ALCOHOL has returned to Mathias! A small stock of beer and cheap wine may be found at the General Store, and some homes may have a small store of alcohol in the fridge or pantry. The Grey Gull has also been restocked with its lower-end offerings of a variety of alcohol types. Alcohol does not replenish in the same way as food.

THE GREY GULL has been cleaned up and stocked with moonshine. Along with the newly restocked usual offerings, the place almost seems like an actual bar again.

THE GENERAL STORE is in a bit of a state following the brutal slaughter of two residents during the Hunt. Cleanup on aisle 3, anyone?

OOC NOTES
FOOD is now being mysteriously restocked as per usual, including inside homes and at the General Store. Alcohol is not being restocked. Use those rationing skills, friends.

REWARD REDEPEMPTION is back and will soon have a new option for anyone looking to spend big AP and learn a bit more of the lore of the town.

MADNESSES due to the Hunt have been earned by Klaus Hargreeves, Ellie, and Malcolm Bright and may now be claimed. Players may also claim additional sanity loss from the aftermath of the Hunt; only losses from the Hunt itself have been deducted from totals thus far.

SANITY REGAIN is now available! Players will submit a form with some details of the progress their character has made and the mod will review and decide on the numbers of points that will be regained.

MOD STATUS The usual reminder that it's mostly just Amy steering this ship for now, so things will probably be pretty slow for a while. Apologies in advance, and please don't feel shy about pinging me if you're stuck waiting for something.

Okay. Okay, that's, that's good.

[There's a pang of sympathy. No tongue. Even though he's used to all sorts of ailments, that's really grim.]

I...

[At her question, he turns in a small half-circle, looking around helplessly.]

I'm not sure. It feels like I've been wandering for hours...

[But it's easier for him to pull himself together and focus now that he has a companion. He's always worked better in a team.]

We should... we should be systematic about this. If we're still in town, the houses can't be far. Maybe we can walk a circle, slowly make it bigger...

[If there were houses on any side they had to reach one eventually, right?]

[It's a good suggestion and one that they have no other choice in. This place was still unfamiliar for her, and as much as she did her best to keep her bearings, it was impossible when the fog came on her suddenly.

Suspicion takes over practicality and she's quick to warn him:]

Don't shout for now. We don't know what we might get the attention of.

[She had no desire to see her new companion killed so soon after finding him. Being alone in this fog, without sound, without sense, it was terrifying. Her breath came roughly at the thought, shaking at shadows that might or might not be out there.

She offered him her hand, to at least ensure they stuck together as they started to wind through the thick.]

[Carter looks down at the new writing and a cold shiver suddenly runs down his spine. He was so set on being found that it never crossed his mind that maybe they don't want to be found.]

Right.

[He lowers his voice to an almost whisper.]

Good thinking.

[When she offers her hand he's quick to take it and sets out with her, slowly moving in (what he hopes is) circles outward in the search for one of the houses. The silence soon weighs on him and he glances over a few times.]

I'm John. John Carter.

[She's able to scribble down 'Liz Brundy' for him, so he at least has her name as they start the slow circle through the fog. It's thick, obliterating any outside light that might at least help them find their way. She listens for any other movement or sounds, but seems to only catch their breathing and the heavy beating of her heart.

She hadn't thought that she wandered too far, but apparently, she was further away than she first imagined. She gave his hand a squeeze, stopping after a few minutes for them to catch their breath. It didn't help that she was starting to feel dizzy and sick.]

Someone told me the fog does things to you?
setthetone: (surprised - what in the)

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-03-13 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice to meet you, Liz.

[It's muttered, he's keeping his voice down, but saying it just feels important somehow. Or maybe he just wants to calm himself down because he can feel the panic rising as they keep walking and walking and nothing shows up. Are they doing it wrong? Even if they can't find a house, there should be a shrub, a tree, something?]

It-- it does. Or so I've heard. It never happened to me before but people told me it's dangerous.

[Deadly, even but he doesn't want to think of that right now.]

Maybe it's... messing with our heads? Makes us go in circles?

[If that's the case, what should they do? What could they do?]

[It helps to hold his hand and guide him through the fog. Much like being a mother, she was forced to keep her mind calm and concentrate on finding shelter rather than the blind panic that a situation like this might cause.

She can tell though that he is afraid, which only raises her own fear, made worse by whatever effects the fog was causing. The headache, the nausea and dizziness were making it difficult for her to keep her steps one in front of the other. He wasn't wrong in suggesting they were going in circles. It was possible she was weaving because she couldn't focus and the ground continue to spin under her.

Resting for long was a bad idea, but she needed a minute more to try and keep her balance.]

Even in circles, we will find something eventually.

[She had to hold to that, for his sake and her own.]

How long have you lived here? How well did you know the layout?

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-03-20 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
A little over two weeks...

[Which seems crazy now that he says it out loud. It feels like he has been here so much longer.]

The town isn't that big from what I know. I think we're still somewhere in it? Otherwise we would have run into some forest trees.

[He thinks. He hopes.

Speaking of the forest. His eyes dart down to pay more attention to the ground when he suddenly remembers the cliff he had once stumbled upon while exploring the outskirts. He starts shuffling his foot too, drawing a little outward spiral as they walk. ]

[Her feet stumble over themselves as the dizziness starts to get sharper in her head. She gave it a shake, slapping her cheeks to stay alert. This wasn't good and she couldn't risk passing out in the open.]

We're bound to find something. Just keep moving as we were.

[She had to believe that, for his sake.

Just when it felt that the last of her hope was giving out, she felt something solid and wooden collide with the tip of her toe. She felt in front of her, finding a post connected to a front porch of some sort. One of the abandoned buildings? It seemed like it, but was hard to tell with how thick the fog was. They could at least have shelter and get their bearings.]

Do you recognize this house?
setthetone: (49)

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-03-27 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes!!

[Carter laughs and breathes a sigh of relief at the same time when they finally find a place. He squints into the fog and up the front, trying to make out any distinguishing features.]

Not sure... It looks familiar but it's hard to tell. But anything's better than out here...

[And from what he's learned about their companions in his first weeks here he's pretty sure nobody in town would refuse them the needed help.

He feels his way up the stairs to the door, still holding on to her hand until he pushes the door open, ready to slam it shut the moment she's inside lest the fog followed them in.]
silentretribution: ([Liz] Watches (Serious))

[personal profile] silentretribution 2021-04-01 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
[She's quick to follow him, deciding to worry about whether or not this place belonged to someone later. For the moment, she's glad to see a chair to fall into as the dizziness overwhelmed her. Having held onto her strength and composure for so long, she was exhausted.

Still, she didn't feel safe. She eyed the cracks under the doors and the window panes. How menacing was this fog?]

Can it get inside easily? [It felt a bit ridiculous to ask, as though this was some sort of sentient being. Was it just over paranoia or the fatigue? It was hard to say, only that she wanted to be absolutely sure they were safe before she rested.]

We can at least try to get our bearing. I don't know the town well enough to draw a map, but we might be able to figure where we are from here.
setthetone: (salt - excuse)

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-04-03 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's hope not...

[But he'll keep an eye on the door, just in case. On second thought, he hurries to find all sorts of towels and blankets, quickly shoving them into the gaps and fissures around the door and the windows. He isn't sure if that's going to do much but it makes him feel better.

Then he exhales, looking pale and stressed, running his hand through his hair. At least until he spots her slumped in the chair which spurs him into action again and move over.]

Hey, hey, are you okay? You're not hurt, are you?
silentretribution: ([Liz] Tears)

[personal profile] silentretribution 2021-04-06 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
[He does it before she has the chance. She might be paranoid or overly worried, but it was better than getting any more sick than she already felt. It at least spared her from getting back up on her feet. Her head was still swimming.

She glanced up at him, giving a small nod, exhausted. Her body felt heavy as well as feverish, but she didn't want to worry him in the moment.]

I feel a bit sick. I'll be fine.
