DAY 037
THE DEAD RETURN

“The only reason for time is so that everything
doesn't happen at once.” —Albert Einstein

The dead return to Mathias forever changed by their experiences. Waking along the beach, near the tree line, or among the graves, they will find that their bodies are not as they remember them. They are whole again and not torn to shreds by the shadow creatures that cannot be described, but they are also not as they were before the Hunt. These residents will find, so strangely, that their bodies are in the physical state in which they first arrived in Mathias — any injuries or recovery they have made since their initial arrival no longer exists, as if their time in Mathias has simply been a horrible nightmare. Except they all now carry a last reminder of the Hunt with them: spiderweb-thin healed scars marking their injuries from the Hunt. Those who were injured by fire in the other realm also carry those burns with them.

The dead are not the only things that have returned to Mathias. Inexplicably, fall is back, with the temperature finally reaching above freezing and snow falling from trees to reveal beautiful autumnal colors. As the sun rises higher in the lightly cloudy sky and the day warms, the snow begins rapidly melting, puddles growing in the slowly revealed grass and little rivers forming in the streets. And with that snow comes the frozen blood from the deaths to the Hunt, tinting the street river on Phillips Drive a sickening shade of red.

Another oddity that residents will notice: houses with broken windows from the encounter with the fog on Day 015 have now been completely repaired, though any boards put in place are still there somehow. A small bit of good news, at least? And truly, how kind of Mathias to clean up its own mess.

Finally, alcohol is back. Enjoy in moderation, friends, for more will not be arriving the following morning.

THE NEW ARRIVALS

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the beach near The Grey Gull. It's quite chilly out with their wet clothes, but surely there's something to help warm them inside the restaurant. Indeed, their timing is perfect, for alcohol has finally returned to Mathias Township — and not just the cowboys' homemade moonshine.

DAY 038-039
THE CHANGE OF SEASON

The continued warm weather proves that the unseasonable shift of the previous day was not merely a fluke. Once again, the sun rises and brings with it a temperature that feels almost spring-like, save for the fact that each day there seem to be more and more leaves on the trees in hues of red and orange. For those who have been in Mathias for some time, this new type of weird may be almost normal at this point, but newer arrivals will likely find it quite odd.

The gently trickling river running along Phillips Drive is still somewhat pink in color as the snow continues to melt and refreeze each night. By Day 040, the bloody snow will finally be gone completely, though the relief will be... short-lived.

DAY 040
THE BLINDING WHITE

In the late morning of Day 040, when the sun is visible through patchy greyish clouds, the fog sweeps into town like a like a tidal wave. It moves in quickly and without warning, not from the waterfront but the forest, cascading through every street in a thick wave of white. Rather than a soft blanket enveloping the town, it is a heavy weight pressing down, blotting out the sky in a way that almost feels suffocating, for none can see further than their outstretch hand.

Those outside when it rolls in are left wandering blind, stumbling toward shelter as you're unable to even see your feet beneath you, let alone any obstacles in your path. Perhaps you call out for help, hoping for another voice to guide you toward shelter or simply another living soul. Or perhaps you were lucky enough to already be inside when the fog descended, quickly closing doors and windows to keep it from creeping in.

Unlike the last time the fog swept into the town, residents who encounter it are not immediately killed. Instead, they are simply disoriented, possibly losing their sense of time and place, and it is only after prolonged exposure that they will begin to feel off. A sense of being ill will cling to them if they are in the fog for too long, including dizziness, lightheadedness, or nausea — the time it takes to manifest varies from person to person, as does the duration it will last after leaving the fog.

By nightfall, the fog still has not dissipated.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER conditions are fairly typical for late fall: chilly "sweater weather" days and nights that can dip just below freezing. You don't want to be outside without a coat, but it won't kill anyone if they bundle up. Probably.

THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the western section of town, beginning just past Hill Lane, before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be between Hill and Stine Road. Venturing into the fog blocking these areas is ill-advised.

DISAPPEARANCES continue. Castiel and Sam Winchester have vanished, and Dean Winchester has not returned with the others after his death during the Hunt.

THE GRAVEYARD has now seen around a dozen burials, both below and above ground. With the weather warming, though, something may need to be done about the handful of temporary graves aboveground...

ALCOHOL has returned to Mathias! A small stock of beer and cheap wine may be found at the General Store, and some homes may have a small store of alcohol in the fridge or pantry. The Grey Gull has also been restocked with its lower-end offerings of a variety of alcohol types. Alcohol does not replenish in the same way as food.

THE GREY GULL has been cleaned up and stocked with moonshine. Along with the newly restocked usual offerings, the place almost seems like an actual bar again.

THE GENERAL STORE is in a bit of a state following the brutal slaughter of two residents during the Hunt. Cleanup on aisle 3, anyone?

OOC NOTES
FOOD is now being mysteriously restocked as per usual, including inside homes and at the General Store. Alcohol is not being restocked. Use those rationing skills, friends.

REWARD REDEPEMPTION is back and will soon have a new option for anyone looking to spend big AP and learn a bit more of the lore of the town.

MADNESSES due to the Hunt have been earned by Klaus Hargreeves, Ellie, and Malcolm Bright and may now be claimed. Players may also claim additional sanity loss from the aftermath of the Hunt; only losses from the Hunt itself have been deducted from totals thus far.

SANITY REGAIN is now available! Players will submit a form with some details of the progress their character has made and the mod will review and decide on the numbers of points that will be regained.

MOD STATUS The usual reminder that it's mostly just Amy steering this ship for now, so things will probably be pretty slow for a while. Apologies in advance, and please don't feel shy about pinging me if you're stuck waiting for something.

That's it? Just 'oh, you're from the future'? Okay, two things. First? I am the future. [ really, he's ahead of even his own time, not to mention carter's ] And second, your comment could benefit from a little more explanation.

[ it's said a little too casually. what the hell goes on in small town nowhere that those kind of subjects come up, just like that? ]

Actually, there's a third thing. Don't ever say 'iPhone' around me or to me again. They're not great.

[ hardly something that's important in the grand scheme of things. especially not here, not right now. there are much more important thing to consider ]

Why would they- Is that a serious question?
setthetone: (neutral - awk)

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-03-03 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Huh. That's a lot to process and he just sort of frowns and nods along with it all. He is about to ask what's so bad about iPhones before he remembers that he has never actually seen an iPhone, so it would be really difficult to have that conversation in the first place.]

Sorry. I guess it could, couldn't it?

[He sounds a little sheepish about that. Man, he remembers how completely weirded out he was just a few days ago. Funny how quickly you got desensitized to stuff.]

It's just, it's usually other people who throw this kinda stuff at me. All right, so, back in my world it's 1996. And apparently that makes me [how had that other guy put it] uh, 'retro' or something.

[He shrugs, what can he say. He's just rolling with the punches at this point.

A beat.]

So is 'the Future' your alias or...

[ iphones are trash because they are the competition. or they would be, if tony's own phone was available to consumers. though even if it was, it wouldn't be anywhere near affordable. again though, something that hardly matters at the moment ]

'96? That was a good year, or so I'm told. [ it's still an odd concept to wrap his head around. different time periods. worlds? okay. he's seen evidence of that firsthand, but people coming here from different points in time. time travel isn't possible. at least not yet. not where he's from. so, how? ] 'Retro' is certainly a word for it. It's no wonder why you're into something as obsolete as a bulletin board.

[ at this juncture, until they get more answers to the questions everyone's asking, isn't rolling with the punches really all anyone can do? ]

Excellent question. No. It's Iron Man, actually. [ he holds out his hand ] I also go by Tony Stark.
setthetone: (neutral - well actually)

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-03-08 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Iron Man. Huh.]

... I'd go with the Future. It's, it's kinda snappy?

[Just saying. He takes the hand and shakes it, wondering why a bulletin board would ever go out of style. What if there was a blackout? What if you didn't have - whatever the better version of an eyephone was? But he doesn't want to look like an idiot from the past even more than he already does, so he just nods along, yeah, yeah, sure. He's sure he'll hate bulletin boards once the roaring 2020s come around. Wow, he'll be nearing fifty by then...]

John Carter. No cool alias. But I'm a doctor.

[He points to his note on the board where he left his number and credentials.]

I have to admit that it definitely has a certain appeal to it. Unfortunately, you're about four years too late on the suggestion. There's this whole armoured motif that goes along with it. It's actually a very fitting name, even if it's technically inaccurate.

[ okay so those are pretty good what ifs and maybe until there's a better solution, tony can concede to the idea of keeping bulletin boards as a backup. not everyone really has the luxury of operating on their own power grid like tony does.

nearing fifty by the 2020s. so tony is around twenty years older than john right now, but they're technically around the same age. huh
]

Dr. John Carter. What's your specialty and how long've you been a doctor? [ or: what can tony ask him to do and how good will he be at doing it? ]
setthetone: (salt - lord give me strength)

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-03-13 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Surgery. About a year in. I'm nearing the end of my internship, mostly general surgery and work at the ER.

[Maybe not the most decorated specialist but hey, at least he's experienced with getting down to the nitty-gritty?]

Preparing for my residency there. Or, you know, I would. If I hadn't been whisked away to a magical town in the middle of nowhere a fortnight ago. I'm pretty sure I'm very fired right now.

[Is that still his priority and main concern in all this, maybe.

A beat.]

So... do you have iron skin, or...

[He gives Tony a once-over and looks like he might try and pinch to find out.]

[personal profile] technologique 2021-03-14 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
A surgeon, huh? [ so he can be useful then. not that a general practitioner wouldn't be just as useful, especially with them trapped here for the foreseeable future. but a surgeon... and he saw another doctor listed on the board.

maybe tony can have this one? no?
]

Oh they probably fired you by day three of not showing up. I would have. But hey, maybe you can appeal to them and get them to take you back, though that is assuming that they even believe you about any of this.

[ tony raises his eyebrows ]

While that would actually be incredibly convenient, and may solve an issue or two, the metal in my body is... minimal. I have armoured suits. Flight capable, mechanized suits, built for offense as well as, obviously, defense. All designed by me, built by me, made to look as good as they do by me.
setthetone: (salt - background salt)

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-03-20 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

[It's the driest thanks in the universe of thanks. Really, that's great. He appreciates the emotional support.]

I guess I can always open my own practice for supernaturally inflicted wounds. Psychic Practice. One free flask of moon water with each exorcism.

[Wouldn't that be something. The Forbes article practically write itself. After suffering a mental breakdown during his surgical internship, John Truman Carter III of the Carter family has fallen in with the esoterics and hacks of the looming new millennium. Rumor has it that he has opened an alternative medicine establishment for those who 'know the truth about the state of the world' where he performs runic rituals and occasionally dances naked under the moon.

Yeahhhh.

How about they move on.]

... Armoured suits, huh? That sounds pretty cool. I don't suppose you have one on you to help us with the looming threats in the fog?
technologique: (Image243)

[personal profile] technologique 2021-04-02 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
[ well tony could have lied to john to ease his mind but they both would have known he was lying. besides, something like that a) doesn't really benefit anyone and b) definitely doesn't benefit tony ]

You could just open up a legitimate practice and have your little home for the supernaturally afflicted as your medical side piece. You know, to keep people from immediately assuming you've had a mental breakdown. Though I suppose with what I've heard about this place so far, there may not be quite as much risk of that as in regular society. [ tony narrows his eyes, looking john up and down skeptically ] Are you even a licensed exorcist, Doc?

[ now it's time to look down at himself a little skeptically, then back at john. no armoured suit. the current thorn in his side. he's currently in whatever the hell part of the country mathias is in (the new england area... -ish?) and the mark 42 is in tennessee with no way to get it here. entrusted to a young kid. locked in a garage with all the security deserving of a highly advanced suit of weaponized armour worth millions of dollars, if not billions: a padlock.

and then of course the rest of his armour is in california where it can do him zero good and so he's stuck here with absolutely nothing
]

It's very cool, actually. [ tony rubs his eyes. it's a lot frustrating and a little panic-inducing ] But, my newest creation is unfortunately down for repairs after its inaugural flight. It's still a prototype and may not have been ready yet for combat or sustained flight. But it held up pretty well until it didn't. It's fine though. I'll fix it. Even in the less than ideal conditions of its current... let's call it 'a repair facility'. [ a lot of unnecessary information where a simple 'no' would have sufficed ]
setthetone: (neutral - pen)

[personal profile] setthetone 2021-04-03 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Working on that one. You ever feel the urge to twist your spine and walk on your hands, hit me up. I'll see what I can do. Doctor-patient-confidentiality guaranteed.

[Still dry, though not as dry because... in a way he is, isn't he? He's been looking into all those books on witchcraft and magic and rituals and he's actively tried to perform some at this point. But that's not something he can readily admit, not even to himself, not without feeling all sorts of crazy and stupid.

... Then again, here is this guy talking to him about his flying robo suits.

How did that saying go? Maybe they're all mad here?]

And you know, that's too bad. I would have loved to see it.

[Honestly, everybody's telling him all these cool stories about the future and he's left imagining it like he's watching the Jetsons.]

But hey, if you know your way around the tech stuff that's gonna come in handy. This place isn't exactly in good shape.
technologique: (ultron173)

[personal profile] technologique 2021-04-08 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry. If it ever does happen then I'll make sure you're my first call. [ he actually laughs a little to himself at that ] 'Tony Stark possessed by a demon'. A few years ago, people would have loved hearing something like that. Tabloids, my Board of Directors, they would have eaten that shit up. Nowadays, they - along with everyone else - might actually be inclined to believe it.

[ anyway, joking aside.

having someone with that sort of knowledge in this place could certainly be good, if it's anything like how people make it sound. he hasn't seen anything yet, hasn't experienced any of this bad that apparently happens (though to be fair, he only just showed up here) so he's a little skeptical of some of it still, and yet he still thinks it isn't the worst idea. just having someone around with that knowledge could bring some peace of mind to the people here, in the face of whatever is or might be happening
]

And I would have loved to show it to you. Would have meant a likely way out of here. At the very least it could have meant some information about the fog or Mathias. Or maybe even just what part of the country we're in. I'd probably settle for that right about now.

[ tony is simultaneously the best and worst person to tell someone about the future. he has all kinds of cool stories about the future he can tell to john (and a few things he could show him) but it's important to note that tony's experience is not everyone's. it's barely anyone's.

he looks around a little and then sighs deeply
]

That may be the hugest understatement I've heard so far today. This place is in terrible shape and could definitely use my help.
