DAY 028
SOMETHING ON THE WIND
Another day dawns in the fair town of Mathias. The sky is a blanket of light grey, tiny specks of snow lightly falling as the hours pass. It makes the town feel almost quaint, the scenery quite peaceful in its winter garb. But beneath the veneer of peace there is a pervasive dread of something approaching. Something inevitable is on the wind, something that has come before and will come again...

Throughout the day, residents will consistently experience feelings of deja vu, that sense of having done or seen or said something before that can never be fully recalled. It happens again and again, tugging at the back of their minds, the memories just frustratingly out of reach.

Residents will also notice a note pinned around town:

The note can be found on the town hall's bulletin board and the front doors of many town establishments, including the Grey Gull, the library, and the boarding house. At the bottom of the note it is specified that the meeting will take place "tomorrow, when the sun is over the town square."

NEW ARRIVALs
The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake on the frozen lawn of the town hall atop a snowdrift. They had best hurry inside and get warmed up before hypothermia sets in.

DAY 029
A GATHERING OF MINDS
In the late afternoon when the sun hangs over the town square, residents will converge upon the Town Hall, where a larger meeting room has been filled with rows of chairs. After most people arrive, John Constantine stands and addresses the room... and then sits again. A grand introduction, truly.

Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and information they have gathered in the town while holding questions until the end. Rather than getting tangled in the intricacies of each person's tale, it seems better to absorb the broad strokes and try to connect the puzzle pieces to get a look at the bigger picture that is the mystery of Mathias Township.

THE INEVITABLE
As the meeting comes to an end and residents begin to converse among themselves, the feeling of something approaching and sense of deja vu begin to build, becoming almost oppressive as night falls. An hour after nightfall, residents learn the reason for these sensations that cease immediately as the earth begins to rumble. The buildings shake, furniture tumbles, and breakables crash to the floor as the earthquake sets in without warning.

The tremors last around a minute, far longer than a normal earthquake, and then the town settles again. There are no aftershocks, which many may note is quite unusual. Residents will find quite a bit of mess in their homes and other locations around town, but there is no structural damage to be found despite the intense shaking.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
— THE WEATHER is fairly typical of a northern winter. The sky is grey, the temperature hovers just below freezing during the day (colder at night), and a light snow falls during both days. Residents should bundle up when going outside and not venture too far into the dark night...

— THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the northern section of town, beginning just before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be. Venturing into the fog is ill-advised.

— DISAPPEARANCES continue with Sherlock Holmes being the latest victim of the town's unsettling whims.

OOC NOTES
— TOWN MEETING STRUCTURE The town meeting section of the log is designed for characters to share any information they would like to with the other residents in attendance. ICly, characters should "hold questions until the end" with the intent that they can get the Big Picture first and connect any dots they see. OOCly, this means players should post their character's information sharing tag in the Meeting section, but the actual conversation about whatever they share happens after the meeting proper in the Mingle section. That way, these conversations can happen however players prefer, be that one-on-one or in small or large groups.

— HOUSING Please be sure your character's housing arrangements are up to date on our list. We're missing a few people and it really helps to know where everyone is for planning. Frequent updates for wandering characters are perfectly acceptable.

— THE BULLETIN BOARD has been updated. Players should note there is a change to the wall near the board that may be of great interest to some residents.

( and he drinks blood on an almost daily basis. but otherwise, her menu for tonight doesn't sound too bad. he can't remember the last time he had a slushie but maybe today was the day to rectify that. )

You're going to be up all night, though.

( not that he minds. after everything, neither of them would probably sleep that much. )

[ note to self: put the chocolate bar on a piece of bread and tease him.

she shrugs, ] At least I have good company.

[ elena smiles, feeling very much like her old self. she doesn't feel weighed down like she's sinking. she feels like she's floating for the first time in years. despite everything that has been shared, she feels good about being here.

her brows furrow softly as she peers down at the snow-covered ground. ] Have you ever heard of a store being magically restocked?

I haven't.

( even the witches that he knew weren't able to just magically restock their posessions. they had to seek out the ingredients and renew their inventory that way. no one could just magically restock an entire store. )

Even the witches that I know aren't able to do that. They have to find their inventory just like everyone else.

( he has no idea what to think of this town or how it works. he doesn't know anything with this power. )

[ she lets out a sigh, hating that it's dead end after dead end. she wishes that there were more answers than questions. isn't that how everything starts? she's overwhelmed with so many questions that sometimes she can't hear the answer. ]

We've been eating things from there for days. I don't feel any weirder. You don't look any weirder than normal. [ she smiles at him, feeling herself relax. ] Maybe it's just... a nice thing that happens to keep us comfortable.

[ as she says it, she knows that's not entirely true. perhaps it's a magically inclined activity that happens nightly to lull them into a false sense of contentment. ]

You seem to be implying that I looked weird before this.

( and yes, he knows that his hair had been different, something that she's pointed out already. and she might get to see his hair like that again if they're stuck here for a good amount of time. )

What about me was weird, Elena? I think you might be talking just to talk.

( he did not look weird. he never looked weird. kol was the weird one of the family. )

[ it's a good thing she's used to teasing jeremy on the fly. she can make things up and hope to not offend him. ]

Well... You not wearing a suit is very weird.

[ it's true, though. him not wearing a suit feels like she's looking at him without his armour. it makes her feel strange looking at him and to see that he can wear shirts like anyone else. he's human beneath his attempts to look formidable. ]

The fact you got a haircut and don't look like you're from the Backstreet Boys is also very weird.

Unfortunately, I can't wear the one suit I came in with all the time. There's very little when it comes to laundering facilities here so I have to be careful with it.

( it's already a bit messy because of having to trudge through snow and he just wants to keep it one piece for as long as he can. )

Is it really so strange to see me in clothes that aren't suits?

Yes.

[ she looks at him seriously, wondering if she's offended him. but she thinks if she did, he'd let her know. elijah's old and seems to wear some of his feelings on his sleeve.

she shrugs as if that's enough to explain her thoughts. ]

I've only ever seen you in dirt, and you were wearing a suit then, too. It's like... your thing. It's weird to see you out of it.

[ disarming and confusing. ]

Rest assured, I don't like it either. I'd rather be in a suit.

( at this point in his life, it felt like armor to him. when he was in a suit, he felt like he had an extra layer of protection against those that wanted to harm him.

he feels very...normal without it even if clothes aren't the reason that he's hard to hurt and kill. )

I feel a bit like Kol, wearing whatever I can find laying around that's clean.

( kol wasn't that bad. he just picked a brother and made fun of him. )

Kol is... a brother, right?

[ she narrows her eyes and tries to commit that to memory. elijah had once told her klaus was the most feared of the originals, and considering elijah is his brother and one of the oldest vampires in the history of time, it's not difficult to surmise the person he speaks of so intimately is a sibling. there's still so much she has to learn about him.

she cracks a smile, shaking her head in amusement. kicks the snow. ]

You make him sound like he'd wear a burlap sack.

Young brother but yes. And he's not that bad, honestly.

( it's probably just safer to speak about kol than it to speak about niklaus all things considered. kol was a better dresser than klaus but he wants to keep klaus out of conversation. )

He knows how to dress himself. He just doesn't care if he makes an absolute mess and lives in it for awhile.

( blood, he's talking about blood. )

[ it's nice that he's willing to speak to her about his brother. elena wonders what he's like, if he's someone she would have to fear. she's so tired of fearing those around her.

she brings her hand out of her coat pocket to wipe at her cheek and lets it hang beside her. the snow's nice and thick beneath their feet. the general store isn't that far away. ]

He sounds confident. [ she smiles at him. ] Nothing like you at all.

Yes, I know. I'm very demure and shy.

( he honestly can't say that about any of his siblings. they were all forthright and outgoing in their own way. some were just more violent about it than others. )

Just like you're very flexible and not stubborn at all.

( except she is the complete opposite and she knows it. they both know it. )

I am very flexible!

[ she shoves his arm and tries to ignore the fact she did that. she shoved elijah, who should be an immovable boulder. she withdraws her hand from him and tucks it into her coat, tipping her head up haughtily.

with the general store clearly up ahead, elena doesn't break off into a run. she stays beside him, trying to act as cool as a cucumber. ]

I used to be a cheerleader. I can do the splits better than anyone you've ever known.

You realize that's not the type of flexible I mean, don't you?

( he doesn't even mind that she shoved him. she'd managed to jolt his arm but he'd barely moved otherwise. he's impressed that she's that ballsy and bold, actually. )

I'm talking about metaphorically flexible. That is something you are not. You are very, very hardheaded.

( he'd known her doppelgangers and he knows this is true about all of them. )

Pfft. [ she scoffs, shaking her head, her hardheadedness rearing its hard head. kicks snow in defiance of his very accurate assumption of her. ]

I'm very metaphorically flexible.

[ she's not. elena knows this. she prides herself on being stubborn sometimes, especially when it comes to the vampiric men in her life.

keeping her hands to herself despite wanting to shove him again, she blows out a breath and sees it form vapour before her. ]

Name a time when I wasn't flexible.

Are you really asking me to think back to a time you weren't flexible to prove that I'm right even though you know that I'm right?

( elijah has to restrain himself from rolling his eyes. he gives his head a quick shake. )

I distinctly remember asking you if you were all right and you saying that you were despite the fact that you were not.

( s t u b b o r n. )

[ surely he realises who he's talking to right now. elena will want him to prove himself right by doing somersaults to make his point, simply to see how far he'll go. she knows elijah won't get physical with her. that's what makes her comfortable.

she smiles, shaking her head. ]

That's not an example.

[ it is, but it's not. ]

An example is like… oh, someone being offered to sleep in a bed and refusing to.

That is an example. You can't ask me a question that I answered and say that it's not the answer. It's not the answer that you wanted, Elena. That's the true thing, isn't it?

( her answer is also an example of him not being flexible and because he's logical he...nods because yes, he hadn't been flexible. )

But I had very good reasons for that and I stand by them.

Because you're afraid of catching cooties?

[ she arches her brow at him and purses her lips together. she thinks she's developed a relationship with elijah here she can push and tease him. yes, she respects he's sleeping on the floor, but she'll continue to request he sleep in the bed. elena doesn't like the fact he's putting himself out because of her. the bed can be big enough for the two of them. ]

I think, all things considered, that I'm immune to cooties.

( he honestly cannot believe that he's just said that word to her. but, she's gotten him to the level where he says the word cooties in a semi serious conversation.

congratulations, elena. )

But I'm really enjoying my time on the floor. It's quite good for my back.

[ elena thinks she's won a battle in getting him to say that word. when was the last time he ever said that? she smiles to herself.

looking at him, she tilts her head to the side and tries to give him her best bambi eyes. ]

Are you? Please don't lie.

I am not lying to you, Elena. The floor is fine. It's one of the better spots I've slept over my life.

( so stop worrying, please. he's not going to get on the bed right now. )

Things are fine and I am not lying.
