DAY 028
SOMETHING ON THE WIND

Another day dawns in the fair town of Mathias. The sky is a blanket of light grey, tiny specks of snow lightly falling as the hours pass. It makes the town feel almost quaint, the scenery quite peaceful in its winter garb. But beneath the veneer of peace there is a pervasive dread of something approaching. Something inevitable is on the wind, something that has come before and will come again...

Throughout the day, residents will consistently experience feelings of deja vu, that sense of having done or seen or said something before that can never be fully recalled. It happens again and again, tugging at the back of their minds, the memories just frustratingly out of reach.

Residents will also notice a note pinned around town:

The note can be found on the town hall's bulletin board and the front doors of many town establishments, including the Grey Gull, the library, and the boarding house. At the bottom of the note it is specified that the meeting will take place "tomorrow, when the sun is over the town square."

NEW ARRIVALs

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake on the frozen lawn of the town hall atop a snowdrift. They had best hurry inside and get warmed up before hypothermia sets in.

DAY 029
A GATHERING OF MINDS

In the late afternoon when the sun hangs over the town square, residents will converge upon the Town Hall, where a larger meeting room has been filled with rows of chairs. After most people arrive, John Constantine stands and addresses the room... and then sits again. A grand introduction, truly.

Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and information they have gathered in the town while holding questions until the end. Rather than getting tangled in the intricacies of each person's tale, it seems better to absorb the broad strokes and try to connect the puzzle pieces to get a look at the bigger picture that is the mystery of Mathias Township.

THE INEVITABLE

As the meeting comes to an end and residents begin to converse among themselves, the feeling of something approaching and sense of deja vu begin to build, becoming almost oppressive as night falls. An hour after nightfall, residents learn the reason for these sensations that cease immediately as the earth begins to rumble. The buildings shake, furniture tumbles, and breakables crash to the floor as the earthquake sets in without warning.

The tremors last around a minute, far longer than a normal earthquake, and then the town settles again. There are no aftershocks, which many may note is quite unusual. Residents will find quite a bit of mess in their homes and other locations around town, but there is no structural damage to be found despite the intense shaking.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER is fairly typical of a northern winter. The sky is grey, the temperature hovers just below freezing during the day (colder at night), and a light snow falls during both days. Residents should bundle up when going outside and not venture too far into the dark night...

THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the northern section of town, beginning just before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be. Venturing into the fog is ill-advised.

DISAPPEARANCES continue with Sherlock Holmes being the latest victim of the town's unsettling whims.

OOC NOTES
TOWN MEETING STRUCTURE The town meeting section of the log is designed for characters to share any information they would like to with the other residents in attendance. ICly, characters should "hold questions until the end" with the intent that they can get the Big Picture first and connect any dots they see. OOCly, this means players should post their character's information sharing tag in the Meeting section, but the actual conversation about whatever they share happens after the meeting proper in the Mingle section. That way, these conversations can happen however players prefer, be that one-on-one or in small or large groups.

HOUSING Please be sure your character's housing arrangements are up to date on our list. We're missing a few people and it really helps to know where everyone is for planning. Frequent updates for wandering characters are perfectly acceptable.

THE BULLETIN BOARD has been updated. Players should note there is a change to the wall near the board that may be of great interest to some residents.

"Don't have the time. Never really thought about it. And, singing in the shower or the car's not the same." But, damn, it would be cool to be a rockstar. Maybe not the adoration, but the groupies. Man, there was a time where Dean would be down with groupies. He's old now. That doesn't sound like a good time to him anymore. Greater thing.

"Maybe if I get back."

"Man, what do you even do back home?" she asks him. She doesn't know what half the people here even do. She doesn't talk about what she does; people don't have, like, jobs the way they do in books and movies and shit. And she's an adult, but barely. Her only job for weeks was revenge, and that's unfinished. She struggles to find actual direction, and has ever since she found out Joel lied to her and didn't let her die for a vaccine.

"You could sing with me if you want, but I don’t know tons of stuff. Just what I could learn at home."

"I hunt. Anything preying on people. I save 'em."

By hunting what's doing the killing, Ellie. He moves further into the Gull.

"Yeah, whadyou know?"

"You mean vampires or some shit, right?" she asks, with some skepticism. She met a vampire at the town hall meeting and that's a trip. She doesn't think Elijah was fucking with everyone just saying he's a vampire, and he told her, sort of, how he'd become one. So sure, why not? Vampires and shadow monsters and magic? This fucking town.

"I dunno. Mostly stuff from the 80s or 90s, I think? You like heavier stuff than I know maybe."

No, Dean believes Elijah is a vampire. He half suspected it from the neck-leering alone. But, he's well-spoken and Elena seems to vouch for him. Not that Elena might not be one, too. But, vampires here, anything here has to be careful. He's definitely on notice.

"Hey, I like my 80's and 90's, too. All classics are classics, no matter the decade." And the 90's does carry with it some iconic songs that Dean might admit to liking.

Ellie has no idea what to do about witches and vampires and whatever else. It's new to her; yeah, she's been here a month, but she had 19 years of just Infected and shit. There's nothing magical about where she comes from at all. More supernatural creatures would probably only make it worse, in the end.

"All right. How about, um."

She picks True Faith, though she doesn't quite remember how it sounded originally with all the synthesizer effects and things. But she likes it. She looks up at Dean to see if there's recognition there.

Dean thinks he's heard it somewhere? Maybe in the Impala one time with Dad, or in the motel when they turned the radio on.

"I feel so extraordinary," he starts, raspy and untrained. "Something's got a hold of me. I've got this feeling I'm in motion, a sudden sense of liberty." He moves his head with the music, thinking back. He closes his eyes first but opens one to check, yes, these are the lyrics? "I don't care cause I'm not there and I don't care if I'm here tomorrow... Again and again," he sings, getting into it, his eyes falling closed again. "I've taken too much of the things that costs you too much. I used to think that the day would never..."

Come? Something. Something.

"... Light. In the shade of the sun."

[personal profile] enduresurvive 2021-02-14 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't entirely expecting him to know it, so she's impressed. She lets him do the words and hums a harmony along until he misses the line, then fills in for him.

"...would never come, I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun."

She finishes out the chorus and then lets it peter out.

"Nice, Dean," she says. "Little rusty but I dig it." She does actually smile, just a little.

[personal profile] cholesterol 2021-02-16 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Lot rusty," he says with an equal, if tired, smile. "But, thanks. Glad you could dig." It feels good to just shoot the shit, sing with a guitar and not worry about what's going on outside. "You know, Raylan and me, we're looking at fixing this place up. Give it a real deep clean. Maybe people will come here. You could play for a crowd. We could go on tour."
enduresurvive: (make an attempt)

[personal profile] enduresurvive 2021-02-22 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've never really...played for people before," she says. She doesn't have stage fright exactly, but more than a couple people is a lot!

"I mean, around a bonfire or something, but it was never just me playing. Dunno how I'd even manage a whole thing."

She laughs, though.

"Yeah, the grand tour of Mathias. One week only! Ellie and Dean play such venues as some old broken down house, a creepy meadow, and town hall!"

He laughs, too.

"I'd see us," he replies, gesturing. He gives a quick look round them. "I should get back out there. Finish my patrol. Keep up the good work."
enduresurvive: (brighter days)

[personal profile] enduresurvive 2021-02-23 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"You can't see us if you're the one singing," she says, mock-stern about it. It's nice to just...be. This place has so few opportunities for it, and she's glad that Dean has a sense of humour, a way of rolling with things. Maybe you have to be like that when you fight literal monsters all the time.

Well, she would know. Infected were once human, but...not anymore. And the older ones, the ones who have been Infected for so long, they're monsters.

Regular humans are, too, when you think about it.

"Be careful," she tells him. Not that being careful is ever enough, but she can't not say it.
