DAY 028
SOMETHING ON THE WIND

Another day dawns in the fair town of Mathias. The sky is a blanket of light grey, tiny specks of snow lightly falling as the hours pass. It makes the town feel almost quaint, the scenery quite peaceful in its winter garb. But beneath the veneer of peace there is a pervasive dread of something approaching. Something inevitable is on the wind, something that has come before and will come again...

Throughout the day, residents will consistently experience feelings of deja vu, that sense of having done or seen or said something before that can never be fully recalled. It happens again and again, tugging at the back of their minds, the memories just frustratingly out of reach.

Residents will also notice a note pinned around town:

The note can be found on the town hall's bulletin board and the front doors of many town establishments, including the Grey Gull, the library, and the boarding house. At the bottom of the note it is specified that the meeting will take place "tomorrow, when the sun is over the town square."

NEW ARRIVALs

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake on the frozen lawn of the town hall atop a snowdrift. They had best hurry inside and get warmed up before hypothermia sets in.

DAY 029
A GATHERING OF MINDS

In the late afternoon when the sun hangs over the town square, residents will converge upon the Town Hall, where a larger meeting room has been filled with rows of chairs. After most people arrive, John Constantine stands and addresses the room... and then sits again. A grand introduction, truly.

Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and information they have gathered in the town while holding questions until the end. Rather than getting tangled in the intricacies of each person's tale, it seems better to absorb the broad strokes and try to connect the puzzle pieces to get a look at the bigger picture that is the mystery of Mathias Township.

THE INEVITABLE

As the meeting comes to an end and residents begin to converse among themselves, the feeling of something approaching and sense of deja vu begin to build, becoming almost oppressive as night falls. An hour after nightfall, residents learn the reason for these sensations that cease immediately as the earth begins to rumble. The buildings shake, furniture tumbles, and breakables crash to the floor as the earthquake sets in without warning.

The tremors last around a minute, far longer than a normal earthquake, and then the town settles again. There are no aftershocks, which many may note is quite unusual. Residents will find quite a bit of mess in their homes and other locations around town, but there is no structural damage to be found despite the intense shaking.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER is fairly typical of a northern winter. The sky is grey, the temperature hovers just below freezing during the day (colder at night), and a light snow falls during both days. Residents should bundle up when going outside and not venture too far into the dark night...

THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the northern section of town, beginning just before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be. Venturing into the fog is ill-advised.

DISAPPEARANCES continue with Sherlock Holmes being the latest victim of the town's unsettling whims.

OOC NOTES
TOWN MEETING STRUCTURE The town meeting section of the log is designed for characters to share any information they would like to with the other residents in attendance. ICly, characters should "hold questions until the end" with the intent that they can get the Big Picture first and connect any dots they see. OOCly, this means players should post their character's information sharing tag in the Meeting section, but the actual conversation about whatever they share happens after the meeting proper in the Mingle section. That way, these conversations can happen however players prefer, be that one-on-one or in small or large groups.

HOUSING Please be sure your character's housing arrangements are up to date on our list. We're missing a few people and it really helps to know where everyone is for planning. Frequent updates for wandering characters are perfectly acceptable.

THE BULLETIN BOARD has been updated. Players should note there is a change to the wall near the board that may be of great interest to some residents.

That depends entirely on your definition of magical talent.

( he supposes compulsion and maybe even the ability to manipulate dreams counts but he believes that she's thinking more of spellwork. )

Witches exist where I come from so I'm familiar with what's typically needed for different spells and curses and hexes.

( he'd had those very things aimed at him a time or two. )

Is there anything specific you're trying to find?

Considering the diversity of the gathered, I'd say my definition is rather loose. [ whether or not that's a good thing, is difficult to tell. a safer assumption is no, with yennefer.

her brow ticks up, head tilted as she slips a few more spices into her bag.
]

Yes, though I doubt I will. Calendine, Marigold. Rhydwaith Carthion, for its healing properties. At this point? I'd settle for fleawort.

[ a beat. since they're talking, mught as well ask: ] So, do you think the rest of the speeches were filled with as much honesty as yours? [ she sounds impressed, if anything. ]

I think the rest of the speeches were informative in a different way than mine was.

( the information in other people's speeches was more about the city, what they'd found, what they thought whereas his was more personal. he scratches a thumb against his cheek before pushing away from the door and coming closer to her.

his eyes scan over the various things she's pulled out of the cabinets before he looks over at her. )

You don't sound so surprised that a vampire exists at all. Most people expect me to sleep in coffins or turn into a bat.

You know what I got from all of them? [ she contemplates, holding the jar of cinnamon aloft, before slipping it, along with an array of peppercorn and (fine) oregano to clink into the canvas bag, before turning her attention to him and his approach as she rattles off the take-away. ] Just a lot of desperate ideas, people taking scraps given to them and trying to make them important, when all it is, is gilded pigshit.

[ but at least everyone has the same steaming heap of it now, right? it's her frustration and habitual harshness, gathered at needle-point tension like the static of a storm before the first strike. she might not have any answers better than anyone else, but it doesn't mean she can't be angry for it all anyway.

her brows tick up, a small fraction.
] High vampires are incredibly rare, but they are real, where I'm from. [ otherwise, vampire is a bit of a hypernym.] And - I've bigger concerns than your sleeping habits.

[ she folds her arms, leaning her hip against the counter, and fully engaged in the conversation, now. violet eyes narrow. ] I am curious - what do you make of all of this? With your centuries lived?

( that's certainly a very straightforward opinion. he can't fault her for it despite thinking the sharing of information wasn't a bad idea especially when the group was as small as it was.

better to know where to go and what to do than to end up dead. or kidnapped. he'd rather not have that happen again. )

I don't know if I'm what anyone could call a high vampire but close enough.

( he dismisses the label with a wave of his hand. )

This place? It's not the first time I've been kidnapped but it's the first time that I've been kidnapped to a town and been unable to leave it. Usually, there are ways around things like this. But, there are spells that could keep even me inside. A Chambre de Chasse comes to mind. But, those aren't usually for such large groups.

( and he doesn't know what he's supposed to find out that will release him. )

My thought is magic from a witch. Unoriginal I know but what else could hold people inside a place without the ability to leave?

[ straightforward, or a particularly unfair criticism? hard to tell.

she offers a small shrug, choosing to forgo the mention of the lesser, base subspecies. there were more curious topics to discuss than the semantics of labels across worlds.

she listens, a single line between her brows.
] I doubt a single mage is powerful enough for something like this, though I do agree - this is magic. It can't be anything else. And that means it has to have limits.

[ a short beat, before offering: ] I'm Yennefer.

Elijah.

( yes, he'd already introduced himself during the town hall but this is a more informal meeting so he does it again. he nods in her direction. )

So, if it's not one mage, do you think it's a group? Or something else?

( he's familiar with witches in that there are powerful ones and less powerful ones but even an original witch like this mother probably couldn't do this. )

I think it's more than one, at the very least.

[ she hesitates, a frown twisting her mouth. she thinks of aretuza, and its restricting walls. arms folded, she leans herself back against the counter. ]

Or, they found a very powerful source, and act as its conduit. [ in which case, she hopes it kills them soon. And Fringilla's fanaticism proved that great power typically comes with a great cost. ]

Where I am from - there is a Chapter of Sorcerers. They like to think they have the market cornered on influence. They are also proof that if enough pride and idiocy band together, they might actually accomplish something. [ she can't miss an opportunity to call on its bullshit. they are also proof that a single disagreement can make the order crumble at the source. Tissaia proved that one. she offers up a small shrug. ] Perhaps it's something similar.

We have covens where I'm from and they can call upon the power of their ancestors. Honestly, if that's happening here, this exhibition of power makes sense. They're very powerful when they come together though I don't know what the point of doing this to random people would be.

( besides inevitable bragging rights. he steps forward and opens a few cupboards, peering inside of them. )

But I think they would have been able to be sensed or they would have made themselves known with what they want from all of us. They have massive amounts of power but it's finite.
