DAY 028
SOMETHING ON THE WIND

Another day dawns in the fair town of Mathias. The sky is a blanket of light grey, tiny specks of snow lightly falling as the hours pass. It makes the town feel almost quaint, the scenery quite peaceful in its winter garb. But beneath the veneer of peace there is a pervasive dread of something approaching. Something inevitable is on the wind, something that has come before and will come again...

Throughout the day, residents will consistently experience feelings of deja vu, that sense of having done or seen or said something before that can never be fully recalled. It happens again and again, tugging at the back of their minds, the memories just frustratingly out of reach.

Residents will also notice a note pinned around town:

The note can be found on the town hall's bulletin board and the front doors of many town establishments, including the Grey Gull, the library, and the boarding house. At the bottom of the note it is specified that the meeting will take place "tomorrow, when the sun is over the town square."

NEW ARRIVALs

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake on the frozen lawn of the town hall atop a snowdrift. They had best hurry inside and get warmed up before hypothermia sets in.

DAY 029
A GATHERING OF MINDS

In the late afternoon when the sun hangs over the town square, residents will converge upon the Town Hall, where a larger meeting room has been filled with rows of chairs. After most people arrive, John Constantine stands and addresses the room... and then sits again. A grand introduction, truly.

Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and information they have gathered in the town while holding questions until the end. Rather than getting tangled in the intricacies of each person's tale, it seems better to absorb the broad strokes and try to connect the puzzle pieces to get a look at the bigger picture that is the mystery of Mathias Township.

THE INEVITABLE

As the meeting comes to an end and residents begin to converse among themselves, the feeling of something approaching and sense of deja vu begin to build, becoming almost oppressive as night falls. An hour after nightfall, residents learn the reason for these sensations that cease immediately as the earth begins to rumble. The buildings shake, furniture tumbles, and breakables crash to the floor as the earthquake sets in without warning.

The tremors last around a minute, far longer than a normal earthquake, and then the town settles again. There are no aftershocks, which many may note is quite unusual. Residents will find quite a bit of mess in their homes and other locations around town, but there is no structural damage to be found despite the intense shaking.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER is fairly typical of a northern winter. The sky is grey, the temperature hovers just below freezing during the day (colder at night), and a light snow falls during both days. Residents should bundle up when going outside and not venture too far into the dark night...

THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the northern section of town, beginning just before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be. Venturing into the fog is ill-advised.

DISAPPEARANCES continue with Sherlock Holmes being the latest victim of the town's unsettling whims.

OOC NOTES
TOWN MEETING STRUCTURE The town meeting section of the log is designed for characters to share any information they would like to with the other residents in attendance. ICly, characters should "hold questions until the end" with the intent that they can get the Big Picture first and connect any dots they see. OOCly, this means players should post their character's information sharing tag in the Meeting section, but the actual conversation about whatever they share happens after the meeting proper in the Mingle section. That way, these conversations can happen however players prefer, be that one-on-one or in small or large groups.

HOUSING Please be sure your character's housing arrangements are up to date on our list. We're missing a few people and it really helps to know where everyone is for planning. Frequent updates for wandering characters are perfectly acceptable.

THE BULLETIN BOARD has been updated. Players should note there is a change to the wall near the board that may be of great interest to some residents.

"Maybe they just can't reach the floor?"

Nightmarish images from pop-culture aside, not that many ghosts seemed to float around near the ceiling. But it would explain why putting the books on the floor, meant that they stayed on the floor.

He's nose-to-page in a random book he pulled down from the shelf near the door, and so far-- he's got nothing. Again. And mostly he's just hiding out here, trying to be anywhere but at the house.

"Dust allergies?"

Raylan looked over sharply at the voice, shoulders more like coiled springs than anything else as his hand slipped to his empty hip before he let out a breath and huffed a laugh, relaxing. "You gotta stop doin' that," he said with half a laugh before considering the floor and the question.

"Didn't think magic had that kind of childish limitations, honestly. But ghost with dust allergies is funny," he granted with a crook of his smile. "Maybe it only sorts out things we touch, maybe that's the trigger."

He glanced over again before squatting down to fill his arms. "Back here lookin' for more clues, I take it?"

"Uh huh, and finding nothing," Quentin's not even that bitter about it. It's been like a week, and no quest has ever been solved in less than a season. Which... might be a problem here, since all they've seen has been cold and foggy. Did foggy places even haveseasons?

"Back for more reading material?"

"Mathis keeps her secrets close," he quips, standing up to start stocking books onto the shelves. He wasn't worried about organization but as long as they weren't on the floor, that's all that mattered. "But keep digging. She just needs to be courted a little."

As crazy as that sounded.

Raylan bobbed his head and glanced over his shoulder. "I don't get as much sleep as I used to here, havin' somethin' to read helps. You got any other recommendations? I enjoyed your Fillory book. Shame they don't have the rest.. Or I assume they don't, anyway."

Oh...

"I, uhm, actually have the rest? But they're from home and- and maybe the story is a little different than the one you've already read." And then there's the issue of... letting the books out of his sight. Quentin eyes his messenger bag on the floor.

"You could... borrow it? Just ignore the notes in the margins-" did he write anything weird in there? Christ, he probably did, but-"as long as you promise to bring it back."

"There's different printings?" He glanced at the bag after Quentin did, brow furrowing a little with his question of it all as he looked back at him.

"Are you sure you'd be comfortable with that?" Nevermind that Raylan had already proven that he took care of the books in his care, Quentin was... obviously attached in a new and different way to the series. "I always try to return the things I borrow, but I"m sure I could.. wait til I got home to read the rest."

Even if that was a cruel kind of slow murder to someone who's into a story.

"No, no. It's just-- no, it's fine. I never would have said anything if I didn't want you to read them, and really. Fillory is-- it's not really Fillory's fault that Plover is a dick."

Quentin takes a second to take a deep breath. Plover and Fillory, just two major disappointments in his life and he's just-- not over that. "But they're good stories, and- these are just. Mine. From home. And they're not exactly like the copy you loaned me. The one that I- the other me picked up. It's nothing major or anything, it's just that. You should probably start with the first one, again, just to make sure you get it all?"

"And like I said, ignore my notes, because I tend to write in them. I used to, anyway. And just this set, because I have the first edition hardbacks back home and I'd never write in those... I'm getting off track. Yes, you can borrow them."

His eyes narrowed a little. Alright, so the writer had done something, but Raylan didn't understand why that would effect the work itself. With the deep breath Quentin was taking, he wasn't going to pursue that right now. Maybe another time.

"If you've got the whole set, I'll just take the first couple. Trade 'em out as I get through them. If it's that important... Wh-" He stopped himself, unsure if he should even open this can of worms or if it would even be welcomed.

"What is it about this series for you? I know a fan when I see one but you're.. somethin' else."

[personal profile] moderatelymaladjusted 2021-02-18 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, okay. So Quentin should have maybe seen that coming, but he had been to wrapped up in talking about the books, or, almost talking to someone about the books and Raylan's question makes his eyes widen.

"I'm... I mean, I just love them? I used to love them-" he amends, grabbing his bag off of the floor to find the first two books, placing them on the table between them. "They're not really- I mean, they're kind of kitschy and you can tell that they were written at a time when the world was different? Rupert is the second one and yes, I know, Martin is the hero of this story, at least until he... disappears? But Rupert does some pretty great stuff in there, and you really get to see the difference between how he sees Fillory and how Martin saw it."

Not the point, Coldwater, and Quentin shakes his head. "I just-- I can't really explain it. I just really loved the books growing up."

So clearly Quentin was conflicted, but in that way that enthusiasts argued and gushed and fought over. It was kind of cute, to be so invested into it, but Raylan had long left his own enthusiasm behind. He was almost jealous that Quentin got to keep that too, as well as magic.

"Sure. Never quite got into any series that hard, but I read a lot. Shame they don't have more of it in here." Fillory would suffice and then some. "But I enjoyed the first one, I'm sure I'll get into the rest. Have 'em back to you in a couple of days," he promised as he ambled over to pick one up and start flipping through it. He was curious how many different notes he'd find. "I read all your notes in the margins by the way. It's an interesting contrast to what's been written."
