021 » WHAT GOES AROUND GHOST AROUND

characters: Elena Gilbert and funeral goers—Elijah Mikaelson, Dean Winchester and Helen Magnus.
location: The makeshift cemetery, south Mathias.
date/time: Late evening, say 6pm.
content: Overwhelmed with guilt, Elena holds a little ceremony for the spectre that she witnessed being murdered. In reality, she's holding it for herself.
warnings: Mentions of death, grief, murder.

The makeshift cemetery could use another marker.

Wrapped up in a long, thick winter coat with a patterned scarf wrapped around her neck, Elena isn't quite sure of what to make of the little gathering that's appeared for the spectre. Perhaps they think she's a little lost (they're not wrong) or perhaps they think that she's saying goodbye to someone she knows (she is). Whatever their reasons, it doesn't matter in the end. The one lesson she's learned over the last few years is that strangers or acquaintances tend to pull through for her when she least expects it.

She ensures not to kick the lantern that flickers by her side as she kneels on the snow. It soaks through her jeans and sticks to the denim, but she hardly shivers. It's with an old and worn sneaker (she couldn't find a hammer) that she hammers in the uneven, splintering plank of wood into the earth and snow. She does her best with her human strength, but it's a little on the wonky side.

There's no name on the makeshift marker. Elena had known what name she wanted to put on there, but she uses the excuse of Elijah's presence to forgo using the pen in her pocket.

Letting out an exhale, she looks at the marker. "This is for whoever you've lost that you didn't get to say goodbye to." Plucking the thick pen from her pocket, she still doesn't look up. "You can write that person's name on the wood if you want."

Elena will be when everyone's gone. She'll write two names on the wooden panel.

The above write-up is my top level so I'll assume anyone who tags in wants to interact with Elena. (Please note she has a Madness that means she has a fear of being buried alive or of cemeteries, ha.) That said, please feel free to top level as I imagine some of you may want to interact with one another! (Just imagine everyone coupling off to talk quietly since one big long thread with multiple people is bound to be, in the words of Beyonce, a disas-tuh.)

Are you asking me to be your friend, Elena?

( is he hearing right? is she asking an original to be her friend in a very...adorable way? he's not going to say that out loud but he thinks it.

it even brings the slightest, quickest of smiles to his face before he shakes his head. )

I can't remember the last time someone asked me to be their friend. Hm.

Maybe all those people who wanted you as their friend found you intimidating.

[ elijah can be an intimidating figure and has intimidated her over the past few weeks of them knowing one another, but elena likes to rise to the challenge of trying to befriend someone she doesn't think is entirely friendable. if she can get under his skin, then she can use it to her advantage.

in mathias, the only advantage she wants is to not feel alone.

shaking her head, she smiles. ] I don't.

You don't find me intimidating?

( that's actually a little surprising considering who he is and what his family has done to her. he's...pleased to hear it but he also wonders if she's not lying to herself. )

Well, you'd be one of the few to not be intimidated.

( or maybe his brother was better at being the intimidating type. )

[ there's a difference between someone who's a physical threat who is kind and someone who's a physical threat who wears it like it's armour. elena once found elijah incredibly intimidating, but much like stefan, she's since discovered that being an old vampire truly means nothing. it's just a way for him to insert distance between them if he wants to.

she brushes some hair behind her ears. ] Are you disappointed?

Surprised.

( but he shakes his head. it's not worth talking about. at this point, he expects people to be intimidated by him because of the way he carries himself and what he is.

but of course elena gilbert, the human doppelganger, would go against the grain. )

If you would like to be my friend, Elena, I will be your friend. If you think you can handle me.

My best friend is Caroline, who I love with my whole heart, but she's as high maintenance as they come.

[ she smiles, feeling warmth blossom in her chest. she misses caroline. she wishes that she was here, being a bright spot in an otherwise dismal town. surprisingly, elijah's been that for her.

she slides her hands deep in her pockets, slouching slightly. she smiles. ]

If I can handle Damon, I'm sure I can handle you.

No one should have to handle Damon.

( god, the thought of damon here gives him such a headache. he doesn't even want to think about it. elijah worries about his control but he'd have to break damon's neck every day to keep him contained. )

All right, Elena. We can be friends.

( does he...hold out a hand for a handshake now?well, if he doesn't, she's going to need to tell him because that's what he's doing. )

[ even stefan shouldn't handle damon, but that's a story that elena can't rewrite all on her own. she's a little grateful that damon's not here (he'd either get himself killed, isolate himself from the rest of the town, or be warm, uncomfortable breath on her neck). elijah isn't the worst person to be here with.

smiling, she thinks she's going to be sly. ]

Does that now mean you're going to take the bed every second day?

No, that's not what it means.

( he's still intending to sleep on the floor, elena, and any attempts to stop him are going to be met with him sleeping outside. )

I don't need the bed to sleep in. I would prefer it if you slept there.

( no arguing. )

And what if it'd make me feel better if you slept in the bed at least once?

[ she arches her brow as she peers at him. kicks the snow by her converse, she keeps her hands tucked into her coat, balling her them into fists. she's going to break him, if not now, later. ]

Would you do that as my friend?

[ how good of a friend will he be? ]

I don't need to sleep in the bed so I think I'll continue allowing you full use of it.

( he was a vampire, elena. he slept in coffins and he was fine with that. he could sleep sitting up or standing up or whatever. )

You need your sleep more than I do. So, while I won't do that as your friend, I appreciate you asking me.

[ she sighs, annoyed. he's not an easy nut to crack, is he? ]

Don't you get a crick in your neck? [ she looks at him, brows lifted. she'll find his weak spot, just give her some time. ] You still use your neck the same way that I do, don't you?

[ sleeping on the floor would have to be incredibly drafty. then again, she imagines his counter would be that he doesn't feel the cold. ]

No, my neck is absolutely fine.

( he twists it this way and that and then shrugs one shoulder. )

I'm fine, Elena, and as your friend, I want you to sleep on the bed because you need the rest more than I do. It's what makes me feel better.

( he puts a hand to his chest. )

As your friend.

[ smiling, she chuckles. he can be funny. she likes that he can be funny. ]

But what about what will make me feel better? [ mimicking him as they walk, she presses her hand against her chest and peers up at him earnestly with big doe eyes that she knows can defeat almost anyone and anything. ] You being on the floor makes me feel like a bad friend.

Then, be reassured that me being on the floor isn't a bad thing. I don't mind.

( he's not going to sleep on the bed, elena, no matter how much you say you want him to. he's just not going to do it. )

You are not a bad friend. You're the best friend I have here.

( never mind that she might be his only friend here. )

[ that means a lot more to her than it should.

elena looks at him, gaze ducking down. she has best friends—caroline and bonnie being the best of the lot—and stefan… but she doesn't think she's ever been anyone else's best friend in the way she would be to elijah. is she his first? he doesn't exactly strike her as a social butterfly. ]

The bed's big enough for two people, Elijah.

( oh, that...is quite the idea. he looks down, unsure of what to say to that. he's not the type to take advantage of anyone but he still feels like it might be wrong. )

I can sleep on the floor, Elena. That arrangement has been doing us just fine, hasn't it?

( why change it? )

[ elena now understands what it's like to deal with a martyr. while he isn't choosing to send himself to the gallows like she had, he's still frustrating.

she eyes him for a moment, lips curving up slightly. always the gentleman? she doesn't want to think there's anything else to it. elijah is old school. ]

Why won't you share the bed? I don't have cooties.

Because I don't want to make you uncomfortable.

( he knows what she's going to say as soon as he says that. he knows but he says it anyway. )

We're still learning about each other and I wouldn't want to cause discomfort.

[ it's truly kind and gentlemanly of him to be concerned about that, but it's unnecessary. elena knows that he's not going to get handsy. he's not damon. ]

And you're sleeping on the floor because of that.

[ she can't help but let out a puff of air. would it cause her discomfort? most likely. she's only ever shared a bed with two men in her life. elijah isn't a girlfriend, either.

but she's going to push onwards, digging her feet into the ground. what elena wants, she'll get, even if she has to wait. ]

I'm sure there's a house we can steal pillows from so there's a barrier between us.

[ yes, she's softly making fun of him. ]

Elena, what's so wrong with the current arrangement?

( she was getting sleep and he was getting sleep and he doesn't think anything needs to change. he shakes his head, not sure why she wants to change this so suddenly. )

I don't think we need to change what's working. I don't think we need to suddenly share a bed when what we're doing currently is doing all right.

[ she tries to pin him down with a stare, arching her brow as she looks at him. ]

You really think I'm going to believe you sleeping on the floor is working?

[ it's not. he's going to grow tired of the floor sooner or later. when there's a perfectly good bed there, she thinks he's going to need all the sleep he can get.

tilting her head up defiantly, ] If it is, then you'll swap with me.

You don't need to sleep on the floor. I've slept in coffins before, Elena. I can do this.

( granted, he'd been daggered and unconscious but that's a detail they don't need to discuss. )

Please, I'm asking you to keep sleeping in the bed. It's working, you're comfortable and I'm fine.

Technically you were dead. That's not the same as sleeping.

[ she can't help herself. he's not exactly right. she's never been daggered and shoved into a coffin, but she had seen his face. ashen, grey, sick. he'd been dead when she had removed that dagger from his chest in the cellar of the salvatore boarding house. everything about him had been dead.

letting out a huff. ] But fine.

[ then she starts to walk quickly like she's in a hurry. yes, elena has a plan, and no, she has not listened to him. ]

( elijah knows there's no way she's just going to give up that easily. he watches her start walking and, after a moment, starts to follow her. she's moving quickly but his legs are longer. )

Elena, what are you doing? Where are you going?

( honestly, the real question is what is she up to and how can he stop her? she's trying to do something but he can't tell what just yet.
