DAYS 021-023
THE WORLD TURNS WHITE“Are ye the ghosts of fallen leaves, O flakes of snow,
For which, through naked trees, the winds A-mourning go?”
— John Banister Tabb
The howling wind is what wakes the residents of Mathias each day now as the world turns slowly into a bleak stretch of white. Snow continues to fall in thick curtains of flakes that accumulate on trees and rooftops, swirling sideways in the gusts of wind that bow trees and whistle through any crack they can find. The drifts of snow grow taller against the buildings and the wind makes the already freezing temperatures feel bitterly cold.
By day 022, the far ends of streets begin to resemble the hazardous fog with how little becomes visible as the winds pick up. Buildings can still be discerned as dark shapes but the weather's warning becomes clear — a storm is coming. And by day 023, the storm arrives properly, the wind still screaming through the streets like a winter banshee announcing so many deaths to come. These conditions are far from hospitable and only the truly mad would be foolish enough to venture outside in weather such as this.THE NEWLY ARRIVED
With an embrace of wintery white, Mathias offers a chilly welcome to its newest residents. They awake along the southern treeline bordering Mathias, near the small makeshift cemetery containing a handful of wooden markers erected without names or signifiers of those buried within. And not far from them is the schoolhouse, where in a snowdrift they will the frozen corpse of a young woman named Rey.

LIGHTS IN THE DARKNESS “A lantern can give you light only when you light it”
— Munia Khan
When residents wake on the morning of day 021, they will find outside in the snow the abandoned lanterns of those shadowy spectres who have moved so silently through Mathias. Each nestled in a patch of frozen white outside their door, the lanterns are now cold to the touch, the half-burned candle within each one seeming to have been lit so very long ago. Inside the glass encasement is a small rolled piece of paper, upon which is written:keep it lit
There is nothing more, and the prior owners of these lanterns will not return within these days.
There is one lantern waiting outside the building for each resident wherever they are sleeping — the exception for this is those who may have already claimed a lantern as their own. Removing a lantern from its resting place results in no apparent reaction, nor does lighting or not lighting it. However, whatever residents ultimately choose to do with these lanterns should be reported.

— SNOW continues to fall, resulting over the three days in upwards of a foot of accumulation. The winds blow in gusts over 35 mph.
— VOICES are not openly haunting our residents, though they may still be occasionally encountered in the more heavily decayed buildings where some rooms seem to almost swallow whatever light tries to enter them.
— THE FOG has still receded from the town proper and much of the eastern and northern beach, with the path through the northern forest to the lighthouse still clear on day 021. On day 022, however, as the storm worsens, the fog returns to the paths in the forest, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper or else.
— DISAPPEARANCES continue to plague the town. While Zed Martin has returned, Rey's corpse will be found in a snowdrift near the Schoolhouse; she disappeared on day 018.
— THE STRANGER is gone.
— THE SPECTRES are gone.
— DISCOVERIES have been collected and collated for your review. Please note that this is OOC information only, put together for the purpose of helping you as players see connections and possibilities for CR and your own character's potential avenues of exploration and investigation. (If we are missing something, please report it so we can add it to the list.)
— AP REWARDS have a new option now — Ideas may be requested if you find yourself stuck. You may now claim up to 2 rewards per log: (1) idea and (1) other reward.
— SANITY may be regained in two ways: self-medication and treatment. In Mathias, this means such coping mechanisms as drinking or drugging oneself into a stupor that allows them to face their fears and issues, or talking to someone about those fears and issues. Since both of these will take some time, best get started. (A form will be added to the Sanity page.)
— REMINDERS — Don't forget about the bulletin board. Please continue reporting your updates to locations, plots, and discoveries. The map of Mathias has been added to the locations page for ease of reference. Make sure your character's sanity level is kept updated. Prospective players are still joining the TDM, so it's recommended to track new top-levels so you don't miss them.

He saw that raised eyebrow, and he just shrugged his shoulders in response. "See, I wish that you could say that and have it be completely accurate. To hear her tell it, there's five years separating us, so we might be here together, but we're definitely not on the same page."
Then he rolled his eyes. "Not to be all dramatic, but I really don't think she wants to talk to me or knows how to anymore. Who would have thought that communication could be so hard?" That last question was more wry and tongue-in-cheek than anything else, because Coulson knew that actually really talking could be easier said than done. And right now, he and Daisy weren't really on the same wavelength at all.
"But you got that last part right. I don't know about her, but I'm plenty miserable." He was just good at compartmentalizing it.
no subject
John lifted his eyebrows at the roll of the eyes, but, surprisingly said nothing. He let the man get it out of his system. An arm draped over the back of the chair, a leg raised to rest against the knee. He kept his eyes on Coulson. Obviously things weren't fantastic for him. John couldn't say they had been for him. Zed and he got into a fight then he died. That's pretty far from fantastic.
"Well, how about we be miserable together, yeah? Two blokes just toughin' it out in a bloody mad town that might drag us into her madness."
no subject
And really, things weren't fantastic for anyone, as far as Coulson was concerned.
"Honestly, that's not a bad plan. If it is a plan," he added with a dry laugh. "You're not bad company, you know. Two blokes it is." He couldn't help but borrow that word, and it felt funny saying it, but he didn't think the other man would mind.
no subject
It was his way of asking if Coulson was still committed to the search. Bumps in the road could shake a person here and there. He just wanted to make sure that Coulson wasn't so emotionally knotted up that he wanted to drop it all.
"Oh, that's just because you haven't found yourself in the crosshairs yet, mate. Just give it some time."
no subject
"In the mean time, don't we have some things to sort out here?" Things such as information gathering and dissemination, which were both more important than Coulson and his relationship troubles. But he couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at John's last comment.
"That sounds ominous. What do you mean?"
no subject
He pulled his feet from the table and stood then.
"Everyone around me dies or is hurt at some point. Just giving you the warning now."
no subject
And then he looked at John with a vaguely questioning sort of look. He wouldn't pry if he made it clear he didn't want to talk about it, but Coulson couldn't really let that go uncommented on either.
"Thanks for the warning, but the way I see it, I'm on borrowed time already. No one lives forever, right? Might as well do something interesting or useful with your time while you have it."
no subject
"Borrowed time, eh? I wonder what sort of trouble a man on borrowed time and a man damned to Hell could get into."
no subject
"My guess is, a lot. I don't know about you, but after awhile, your sense of self-preservation starts to decrease, sometimes without you even knowing it's happening." It's been a gradual thing for Coulson, anyway, and he hasn't always noticed it, but then he does something that's not exactly recommended for anyone wanting to stay alive.
But that's the point: he's already died once, so something in his priorities shifted. It's not a death wish, just an increase in his risk-taking side.
no subject
He chuckled. "I haven't got much self-preservation left."
After all, he did offer a demon a ride in his body if it meant saving his own skin.
John pushed himself to stand. He patted his shirt and clothes down, nabbing his trenchcoat and putting it on. With a gesture he expected the man to follow him. Time to go see what secrets might be hiding here in Town Hall.
"I aim to keep as many as you lot alive as long as I can."
no subject
Except "we" was a stretch, because Coulson wasn't looking for those kinds of attachments. That didn't mean that he wasn't happy for John, though. "I'll leave the what, when, and where to the imagination. Or not. I'm just glad you had a good time."
Coulson got the gesture loud and clear, and he got ready to follow John wherever he was going. "No arguments here. Lack of self-preservation or not, I'm good on the whole 'not-dying' part, and I don't want to see anyone else kick the bucket either."
no subject
It was all done in jest, really. John had nothing against Coulson.
"The deaths we have are enough." John agreed. Though, lack of self-preservation? He understood that one. "How about was start in the back? Bit of a short walk that way."
