DAYS 012-014 “The overcast skies had the colour of deadened stones, and seemed closer than usual, as though they were phlegmatically observing my every movement with their apathetic emptily blue-less eyes.”
—Simona Panova, “Nightmarish Sacrifice”
Rain has returned to Mathias. While those who remember the storms from nearly two weeks ago may fear reprisal of such tumultuous weather, this rain is far tamer. The cloudy grey skies let loose a steady drizzle that remains constant from start to finish, which is in itself, perhaps, a bit unusual. The patter of droplets against windows, small streams forming in the roads and on grass as the ground becomes saturated, all of it may seem normal to some, but a little too normal to others.
What is without question abnormal, however, is the sun. Though it cannot be seen distinctly behind the thick grey clouds, its light remains as constant as the rain throughout these three days. Hour after hour, regardless of the time of day, there is light in the sky. Unchanging, an inescapable reminder that Mathias is not home, and none who are brought here have any control over what will occur in this place.NEW ARRIVALS
Once again, more unfortunate souls have been brought to Mathias by unknown means, deposited at the edge of the forest near the empty houses that tell of those who once lived in this strange little town. They may find themselves wandering through the trees until they encounter the strange fog that envelops the town, or stumbling upon the rotting remains of houses that have felt the passage of time more than others.

LOCATIONS
LIGHTHOUSE Residents will notice the lighthouse to the north of Mathias, situated on a cliff that is above the town level. Even the most observant individuals will not have noticed it before now, which might be quite unsettling to some. There is no path available to reach the lighthouse at this time, though residents are welcome to try — they will be blocked by fog in the forest and a sense of unease that becomes debilitating if they walk too far along the beach.
NO NEW LOCATIONS are available for exploration at this time. Residents are welcome to further explore available locations, including utilizing AP rewards at locations they may have previously explored.
— CLOCKS continue to be unreliable. Some may keep irregular time at different rates, while others have ceased to work at all, each having stopped at a different time.
— VOICES are not openly haunting our residents, though they may still be occasionally encountered in the more heavily decayed buildings where some rooms seem to almost swallow whatever light tries to enter them.
— WEATHER conditions are both typical and atypical for late fall. Temperatures consist of chilly "sweater weather" days and nights that can dip below freezing — you don't want to be outside without a coat when the sun goes down. A constant light rain continues for all three days, only stopping on the night of the third day. And for all three days, there is constant cloudy grey sunlight, with the sun unable to be seen and tracked from behind the cloud cover. Darkness will return to Mathias on the third night when the rain stops.
— FOG continues to block the way of those wishing to travel further than the Town Hall, and all who venture into the forest will be met by its impenetrable wall after a few hundred yards. The fog will allow none to pass; those who try will find themselves overcome by fear and panic so intense, they can physically do nothing but flee back the way they came.
— HOUSING LISTINGS now have a permanent home! A few of these may have been missed or information might have changed, so please do submit updates as needed, including if your character moves into a new location or if there are rooms still available at said location.
— NEW PLAYERS are still arriving with each new log, so make sure to keep an eye on our ooc intro post. (An easy way to do this is to track the post — click the bell icon, select More Options, and track when someone makes a new top-level.)
— INFORMATION may publicly be shared between characters at the bulletin board in the town hall. This is meant to be a permanent place for pieces of the Mathias puzzle to be shared and archived to both help information be shared ICly and to allow new players to easily dive into the mystery.
— THE CALENDAR has been updated through the end of the year. With the approaching holiday season, we will continue a lighter log schedule, but as always, players are welcome to create their own logs, conduct intensive investigators, and make more terrible decisions. (The mod is always happy to enable these shenanigans, never hesitate to reach out with ideas.)

Maybe next time we can just try the door first.
[ But thank you for showing off, John.
Eliot steps inside, casting his gaze around the barely furnished room. Why someone would choose not to live above the only bar in town is beyond him, but to each their own, he guesses. Despite his magic being on the unreliable side of things, Eliot wiggles his fingers and then creates a square with his thumbs and index fingers on both hands, which he raises up to his eye to look through.
He's not even surprised that it reveals absolutely nothing. ]
Do you want to start looking on one side and I'll start on the other?
no subject
He rolls his eyes to himself. Just try the door first. Yeah, yeah. ]
Here I figured whoever owned the downstairs would of lived up here. [ John half turns to see the finger wiggle and raises an eyebrow. ]
Seems fair enough... trying to make a window to see through the mystery with your fingers, mate?
no subject
[ What else would he be doing? Voguing?
Eliot lets the annoyance of faulty magic wash over him as he starts to make his way to one side of the apartment. John was thinking just what Eliot had been, that the owner would live here. It clearly wasn't used for extra storage. Maybe it was for nefarious or questionable activities. Illegal gambling. Mob meetings.
Or maybe it was just a shitty apartment and no one wanted it.
His thoughts are interrupted when one of his steps lands on a particularly creaky floorboard. Eliot lifts his foot, looks down, and puts his foot down again. He puts a bit of weight into it, feeling the board sink more. ]
Maybe no one wanted to live here because the floor's about to fall through.
no subject
Mob meetings and illegal gambling would be fun. Mathias doesn't allow fun.
He turns back when he hears the creaky floorboard. His eyebrows come together as he nods for Eliot to try the floor again. It's the first thing he's heard creak in the whole bloody town. He flairs his trenchcoat behind him and kneels down beside the other man. ]
Think it might have something to do with the shit state the whole place is in. [ John raises his hand and starts knocking all along the board. Call it a hunch or desperation. ] Why is it only this one spot that's like this?
no subject
[ Which honestly makes no sense, and when Eliot thinks something doesn't make sense, then shit has to be fucky. How could such a run down place have no creaking floorboards except this specific one? ]
Are you going to rip it up?
no subject
[ He pounds harder on the floor for a moment. ]
Got anything that could give us a hand with that?
no subject
[ Just because you're used to one thing doesn't mean it's necessarily right. Which is about as deep as Eliot wants to get right now.
He looks down at the floorboard. The last thing he wants to do is use his perfectly manicured hands to rip it up, and, honestly, doesn't John look more equipped for this sort of manual labour?
A quick look around says that it's unlikely they'll find really anything useful to help, so Eliot sighs internally. He takes a deep breath and holds out his hand, focusing hard on the floorboard. At first it seems like nothing really is going to happen, but after a few long moments, his hand starts shaking under the strain (it shouldn't take this much energy to lift a floorboard) and the board starts to jostle. ]
This is a good time to help -
no subject
[ He doesn't know about the greater multiverse. They all exist on their own times. Sometimes they'll merge, they'll dance, then go on their merry way. Not always though.
Not like Mathias.
At least, not that he's aware of.
John raises his hands once he feels the magical energy. Interesting. The moment he can? He slips his hands underneath the board and gives it a few tugs. The final one POPS the board up, and he falls backwards on his bottom from the sheer amount of effort both of them had to put into it.
Then, there's a laugh. ]
Good to know I'm not the only mage in town down on his luck.
no subject
He inhales and exhales heavily through his nose to centre himself again. ]
Time is fucked. The sun is fucked. The moon is fucked. Of course magic is fucked.
[ But it doesn't matter. It does, but not now, because Eliot can see something in the now open floor. ]
Did we just Hardy Boys a clue?
no subject
[ He uses whatever the hell he can.
He pushes himself back up, dusting himself off as well as tossing the loose board aside. John kneels down next to the hole and pushes up the sleeve of his shirt and coat. ]
Might of--well, [ he waggles his fingers, ] let's hope nothing bites me. Yeah?
[ AND he shoves his hand into the floorboard. ]
no subject
[ What exactly does rural in that tone mean? And what magician doesn't take into consideration the circumstances of alignments when casting anything?
Curiosity gets the better of Eliot, and he steps a little closer, leaning over to watch as John's hand disappears into the hole they've uncovered. ]
Well? Are there furry friends in there?
no subject
[ Honestly, there's no judgement. It's just been awhile. ]
Nope... but... [ after a second, he pulls his hand back. Then, his eyes widen and he lurches forward a bit, handing hitting around inside the floor... ]
no subject
If you tell me there's body parts under there then I'm out. I draw the line at limbs.
no subject
Then, john starts to laugh.
He pulls his perfectly normal hand out, grinning all the while, and waving it around. Gotcha.
Though he does have a bit of paper in his hands. John pushes himself up and gives a sniff, looking them over. ]
The look on your face, mate. Priceless.
no subject
[ See his face now, John? That means that Eliot's pretty sure you're an idiot.
The papers, though, are interesting. Eliot doesn't reach for them because he has manners, but he does step around so he can peer down at them from over John. ]
So ... Not a note telling whoever finds those papers what the hell happened to everyone.
no subject
Unfortunately, no... but... [ he holds one up, flipping it over in his hand. ] Now, I'm going to take a guess, and say you had no idea there was a house in the woods.
no subject
[ The woods, he means. But that's ... Interesting. Eliot looks over John and at the map. ]
What do you think makes it so important that whoever lived here had a map to it?
no subject
You never had a treehouse you hid things from your parents? Come off it, mate. Why else would someone have a map to a hidden house in their house?
no subject
Usually. ]
You really think they needed a map to their own special hang out place? Maybe they used it for bootlegging because this town is stuck in permanent prohibition. But you seem to have it in good hands so I'm gonna go find my cake and eat my feelings.
no subject
[ He wags it between his fingers. ]
Wasn't the prohibition in the 20s? Pretty sure most of what we have are from the good old 90s. Christ, who would of thought my teen years would come back to haunt me through videos?
no subject
Well, this was fun. Good luck with the mysterious forest house.
no subject
[ John nods and pockets the paper. He'll keep it in his ever growing collection of Mathias oddities. ]
