They'd always known the dangers that the brewery posed, and that was partly why Doc didn't want to venture too far from their original house. Unfortunately he hadn't been home when the fire landed. They can't know if a few extra minutes would have been enough to avert disaster.

"Do keep an eye on him." Doc breathes a quiet sigh, tries to stay emotionally uninvolved and keep his tone neutral like he's still pretending it had just been sex between them. In the end they're going to suffer the fallout alone anyway. Might as well keep the suffering ringfenced in between the cowboys and spare the others.

"He's likely to take this as a personal affront." And he would likely insist that Doc isn't taking it personally enough, too.
