DAY 065-071
ASSIGN TO OBLIVION

“No matter how much time passes, no matter what takes
place in the interim, there are some things we can never
assign to oblivion, memories we can never rub away.”
— Haruki Murakami

Only two days have passed since the town was fractured, leaving residents cut off from those they'd come to know and even care for. A mere two days of wandering the new streets, uncovering more secrets that continue to make little sense of this strange place. Two days with sunrises, sunsets, and nights that seem like any other.

And yet.

When residents wake on this third day, they will find that much has changed. All around them, wherever they may be, there are signs that time has passed without them. Dust covers everything, indoors and out, even areas that were spotlessly clean seemingly hours ago. The residents themselves are covered as well, dust clinging to their hair, skin, and clothing—

Clothing that they may not have been wearing when they went to sleep. Each resident, regardless of the state they were in previously, is now clad in a pair of white pajamas, with long pants and button-up shirts. Those who thoroughly explored Baneberry Hall will easily recognize these articles as identical to those well-stocked in the decaying great house. On top of this, the clothes they wore from home have disappeared, along with anything else they may have brought with them when they arrived or items from home that have been found within the borders of Mathias.

There is no sign that anyone has entered their place of shelter, nor is there any sign of what may have been done with these items or how they came to be wearing these clothes. The dust all around them is undisturbed, almost as if they had been sleeping there for quite some time, though it seems impossible for such a thing to have occurred naturally.

THE NEW ARRIVALS

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the lawn of Town Hall, at the center of the little town square. They, too, are bereft of any items from home and clothed in the identical white pajamas. There are shops all around them, with houses just beyond, and at first glance, everything seems almost picturesque. Except for the silence that is at times so complete as to be maddening... Welcome to Mathias.

SUMMERTIME

— When summer arrives, so too does an outdoor stand in front of the General Store. Sporting a handpainted sign proclaiming Whateley Farm, the stand is overflowing with a variety of produce: berries, plums, carrots, cabbage, cucumbers, green beans, leeks, onions, peppers, potatoes, zucchini, tomatoes, and garlic bulbs. These do not replace the produce offerings normally found inside the market, but they do behave strangely. The stand replenishes sporadically, sometimes every other day or every five days. There is no discernible pattern to when it replenishes, nor is there any sign of how it came to be there at all.

— With the now-complete reverse change of season, much of the autumn debris has cleared from around town. Only a few stray leaves and fallen branches remain, their crisp colors at odds with the warm summer days. The forest has also cleared of much of the fall detritus, making it easier to both follow the paths and potentially spy things that might be out of the ordinary.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER Summer has arrived in Mathias, bringing with it warm days that average 70°F and comfortably cool nights. The skies are clear throughout the week save for Day 68 when a light rain falls from a grey sky throughout the day.

THE FOG has maintained its new boundaries.
— Residents may now wander the southern stretch of the forest surrounding Mathias Township — it is possible to leave the paths but potentially unwise to do so.
— The fog has also retreated from the western section of town entirely.
— Access to the northern section of the forest is still blocked beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline; this section of fog will urge residents to stay huddled within the town proper by inducing a physical reaction of panic and fear.

DISAPPEARANCES AND DEATHS continue! Max Guevara and Liz Brundy have disappeared, and now that everyone is back together, residents will notice that Yennefer, Number Five, and Tony Stark have also vanished.

ALCOHOL supplies have run dry, save for any dregs that have been squirreled away by individual residents. Moonshine can still be acquired by those in desperate need.

OOC NOTES
UPDATES Don't forget to report updates as they come up! Changes to locations (like toppling a few bookshelves in the library), big plots you have coming up that will affect the game (parties, major property destruction, etc), or exciting discoveries that may tie into the game's mythology (even the things provided by the mod) are very helpful to have in one place so relevant page updates can be made. IC events are also helpful to know about in advance so they can be included in the log write-ups.

MOD STATUS My non-RP life is busy and chaotic and I continue to ask for your forgiveness and understanding as game things continue to be slower, as I cannot promise timely mod responses beyond weekends and even that is not wholly guaranteed.

ITEMS FROM HOME All items from home that characters would normally possess have vanished for this log and will return in the next. This includes clothing and possessions they had when they arrived in Mathias, items that were found in the rain, and items that were found in Baneberry Hall and removed from the property. Items from home that were left behind by other characters no longer in the game have also vanished. (All other items and clothing still remain, it is only items from characters' homes that have disappeared.)

BANEBERRY ITEMS The items from home that were not removed from Baneberry Hall in the last log have vanished from the property. These items will not reappear in the next log. (Please be sure to comment in the appropriate spot on those logs about the state of your character's item for inventory purposes, ie whether they were removed from the property or left behind.)

ACTIVITY CHECK Beginning with June's AC (posted at the start of July), all tags that consist of only dialogue will count as 0.5 points, not just those that occur in an inbox thread — this applies to both AC and AP totals. This adjustment is an extension of what has been in place since the start of the game: that all dialogue-only inbox tags counted for a half-point. Since such tags have occurred regularly in log threads as well, the half-point status is simply being extended to all tags regardless of location in order to be fairer in point distribution. (Examples will be provided in the AC post to assist with proper counting.)

His mouth shifts, slanting to one side though it could very well be the beginnings of a more pensive expression and not some desperate move to not burst into laughter. He nods, tugs on an earlobe before looking away and then back at her.

"How much longer on the casserole?" he barely gets out, realizing he can't keep the smirk off his face.

Oh, she sees that look. That attempt at hiding a smile. And is that a hint of repressed laughter she hears in his voice?

"Go ahead, let it out," she tells him in an exaggeratedly put-upon tone as she moves to lean tiredly against the island disaster area. "I know you want to. Honestly, you've lasted longer than I would have."

What is this, the Senate? Doc would have pointed out this ain't a democracy, but he'd told Malcolm that this house was meant for him. And, well. It doesn't matter so much what Doc wants, even if it's going to be burdensome to have to keep an eye on Negan on top of everything else he already does for 1306.

"It is my garage." Negan's already taken this room. He isn't taking the garage also. "I will leave."

Just, give him a minute to run his hand through his hair and wake up enough to get out of bed and head downstairs.

Raylan's eyebrows lifted. Well. No beating about that bush. Good. Once spoons and their glasses were dropped off at the table, Raylan sat himself and picked up one of his sandwich halves.

"Not as close as you," Raylan answered, a glint of knowing in his eyes - he knew - "But dying and livin' with a man doesn't make me a stranger. I already know about Negan's memory-" The cold showmanship of it all was impossible to set fully away. "So you wanna give me the details of why you kicked him out? Worried that he's gonna do that to us or pissed that he turned out to be capable of that level of violence?"

He took a bite of his sandwich, but his eyes didn't leave Doc's face. A bit of Marshaling required attention.

The name is tucked away in his mental notebook, but he can imagine it'll be easy to spot a man that looks like Raylan but isn't. It'll just be a matter of him trying to determine if he's just run into Raylan somewhere again or not. Little does he know that they sound or act completely different.

Dorian might be a little distracted, following the line of Raylan's back to those slightly cocked hips. He's not dead, he has eyes, and it's hard to keep them off of a man that cuts a nice form, especially when he stands attractively at a fridge. It's like he's doing it on purpose. He'll shake himself from it though and snap his eyes back up as soon as the door closes.

"I'm an--well,was--an Altus." He says with a soft chuckle, knowing that word likely doesn't mean anything to the other man.

"My father is a Lord, yes. He's a Magister and consiliare to the Archon. Which is like something of a King, only the Archon isn't only chosen by blood relations, someone with enough prowess and power with magic can become Archon. So all the children of the noble houses, like me, are literally born and bred and trained in hopes of perhaps one day becoming Archon. Where I'm from having magic ability means a higher station. And if you are born without you are of the lowest caste. That's only in Tevinter, however, outside my home it's very different." He wanders over to look over the thing known as a stove as he talks, puzzling over the knobs and coils.

"I suppose I could learn, should I need to. But I would likely be terrible at it. I can cook things over a fire in a pinch to survive, but I would give nearly anything to have decent food with actual spices."

"Oh, don't worry, considering my predicament my expectations aren't so high as to expect perfection." He smiles softly.

"That is to say, I'd be happy to join you for some Moonshine, as you call it. If you'll have me."

"I don't think we have all that much left so we can finish it off," Elijah says before turning and gesturing for Dorian to follow him. The moonshine had been something he and Elena shared every so often.

He starts walking, expecting Dorian to keep up. The boarding house isn't too far away.

"I would show you around this place but what's there today might not be there tomorrow."

"Think southeast Kentucky would prove that gunslingers are still much needed," Tim said with a wry turn of his mouth and a quick mouthful of 'shine before he tucked back into his meal.

"What manner of bar you put together, Doc?" The sniper asked, steel blue eyes focused on the older man's face as he ate with tidy, efficient bites. Somehow the food was disappearing at a rapid rate, yet it never seemed as if Tim were rudely shoving it in his face. Economy of movement thy name was Tim Gutterson.

Literally Malcolm's face at that.

He takes a breath.

"Obviously anyone would prefer to be... the most special person in someone's life but. We can't just have everything we want, can we?" he points out reasonably.
abrightboy: (secret smile)

[personal profile] abrightboy 2021-07-19 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Malcolm laughs gently.

"Oh, I'm... as okay as I ever am. Found some medicine and... my friends have all come home. I arrived broken; I'm doing... more well than I have a right to, probably."
abrightboy: (wants to help)

[personal profile] abrightboy 2021-07-19 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
At the compliment, Malcolm's expression hovers on the edge of a smile.

Is... is Dorian flirting with him?

No, probably not. Why would he?

He looks down into the pillowcase at the question.

"Um, no, but one of my roommates is. Can't go wrong with fresh fruit, though."
abrightboy: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] abrightboy 2021-07-19 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I would do anything to protect you," he tells her softly. "Anything. Even that." Which is one of the reasons he believes the memory. "But..." He swallows. "What if it awakens something in me? What if I enjoy it, like he says?"
abrightboy: (self deprecating smile)

[personal profile] abrightboy 2021-07-19 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Raylan says the Lodge is that way," Malcolm tells her, pointing. The fog still obstructs the way. "But the shadows in the mirrors... I don't know." He starts leading her towards Penhew House. "I guess we'll have to look."
abrightboy: (pays attention)

[personal profile] abrightboy 2021-07-19 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"The architecture? Yes. Being trapped in a town with no animals and no way out? No." He glances around. "I wonder if we're not on Earth just... in a cage designed to look like Earth."
thering: (Doc386)

[personal profile] thering 2021-07-19 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"What," Doc asks flatly without really asking. He'd never said anything about Negan, and everyone knows Negan is full of shit, so of course Doc's going to play dumb.

But that was inextricably part of it. Doc had felt disappointed in himself for... doing the things Raylan knew they had done. A little betrayed.

"You know, I'd-- I had felt sorry for him," Doc admits. Which was not why the things between them had happened. But that's neither here nor there. He hasn't started on his sandwich yet but no doubt he can make quick work of it - as soon as they've stopped talking about Negan.

"I should have known better. You said you saw the memory? Tell me, in all your years of service, how many men have you shot between the eyes that enjoy doing what Negan did half as much as he did? You ever thought about moving in with them?"
abrightboy: (looks away in thought)

[personal profile] abrightboy 2021-07-19 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Malcolm was the last person to think ill of him doing this. It was hot, actually, and his breath hitched as he was brought into Raylan's mouth, distracting him from his own task. Why did he think he had enough blood to operate both ends of his body?

He managed to get back on track, but Raylan no doubt felt the vibration effect of the moans his own work was eliciting, Malcolm's head bobs getting less coordinated as he got closer to climax.

Just a little flirt, but he is sort of captivated by those eyes and how much could be behind those depths.

"No, I suppose you can't. Maybe I should follow suit and pick up a few things. I'm not much of a cook myself. Though, I am used to other people cooking for me." He's peering over the produce a while.

"Me too," Malcolm concedes. "My mother had staff for that when I was growing up and after I moved out, I just... ordered in a lot." He watches Dorian for a moment. "Why don't you come eat at our place. Like I said, my roommate is an amazing cook."

"You could promise me thrills and riches and I would still not be going to Kentucky," Doc says with a rumble of a chuckle. Not even for the lucrative gunslinger career. Not even if Raylan asked him nicely and promised him... other things.

"It is just a local watering hole, in a small town up north not too different from here. The bar is called 'Shorty's'. I don't intend to change it much from how the previous owner had left it. Wouldn't be my first time running such an establishment, but people used to come in guns ablazin' 'nd all. I suspect I won't have as good of a reason to shoot my clients."

Doc's comments on Kentucky earned him a low chuckle from the younger man.

"Good thing Raylan's already working on his exit plan from Kentucky with all expediency. Hell, what he pulled off just before I arrived here, he's going to be able to write his ticket anywhere he wants to go."

The stew and bread was finished and Tim leaned back with his glass of moonshine, studying the older man.

"Shooting one's clientele is generally considered not good for the bottom line," not that it seemed to slow Boyd Crowder or any of the Crowe ... or the Bennett families down that much. "But I detect a hint of wistfulness for the days of yore," the observation was made directly but not unkindly. "Can't imagine you don't wrestle with a bit of 'fish outta water' syndrome?"

Ellie doesn’t think of herself as intense, but it’s not an inaccurate description. She’s just been through a lot. Everyone in Mathias has, of course. Ellie was in the middle of a bunch of heavy shit before waking up here, though, and she’s not able to let any of it go.

She does manage a smile at Parker’s attempt to use profanity to cope. It works for Ellie, after all. At least somewhat.

She tilts her head at the question.

“Look around. It was, like, fall or some shit before, right? The weather. It’s warm now, right? It was cold as shit before. And everything was covered in dust, at least where I woke up. Was it different for you?”

She looks off in the direction of the fog. Of course. Of course there’s more fog. Maybe they’ll never get to that fucking Lodge, at least…not while they’re alive. Well, she hates that idea, thanks.

“Fucking bullshit fog,” she says. But she turns and follows.

“All right. We can surely take some creepy shadow people. What else did I miss?”

"I guess I lost my shit."

Tim's expression was No shit but it wasn't unkind or unsympathetic.

"Yeeaaah," he drawled out while glancing around at the mess. "Think all of us fall prey to that at least once. This place sneaks up on you like that."

As he spoke he nudged some broken cassette tapes into a small pile with his foot. "Seen a dustpan around here anywhere?" It was all about tone, he was offering to help. Also offering to listen, but figuring it might be easier to work into a conversation while they had the distraction of cleaning.

The younger marshal's expression was more than a little skeptical but Dorian might learn that Tim's expression was usually one of skepticism. Even when he was face to face with someone who claimed to embody a lot of the tropes Tim liked to read about.

"Well, my direct experience with the idea of magic is limited to books and slight of hand illusions," he offered with a small twist of his lips. "So I am in no position to cast aspirations or give advice on the subject. Won't even ask you to refrain from blowing up any buildings, just maybe try to make sure no one is in them at the time."

Between Raylan and Will setting fires and the Bards occasionally going sideways with their music, there was no one in this town who should be throwing stones at glass houses.

Figuring that they were not on sit a spell terms, the Ranger wandered towards a porch support and leaned his shoulders against the wood.

"Nothing all that exciting," he ended up saying, figuring his dumbass falling off a cliff and into the ocean really did not warrant sharing with the entire town. Not only as a way to protect his pride but also because nothing of what happened to him would be of use to anyone else.

"You get an opportunity to explore more than Penhew? Don't suppose there was a body found in the ruins of the old church?" Asking about Graham's body seemed a good way to get footing on the topic of how much had been the same, how much -if anything- had been different.
