"I see," Doc says evenly. "Yes, I have." So, either they are both going crazy, or this is happening to the both of them, and more likely than not there is a little bit of both at play. He's not certain anyone can spend any sizeable length of time in Mathias and leave the place unscathed.

He's keeping his poker face firmly affixed even though some of the things he has witnessed and felt were quite--... upsetting. He deals with it differently; packs everything away neatly and takes it all out to scrutinise, mull over, sort and recompartmentalise whilst having a cigarette and a bottle of drain cleaner. In that respect, he might seem a lot more 'together', at least on the outside.

"I have been... judiciously avoiding touching anything that might look like they belong to someone else. I am not certain those moments were meant for me." Or, even meant for the person that the worldly possessions belong to. Some things don't really need reminders, and are better off staying in the past.
