She has a way of doing that sometimes, preemptively downplaying herself, her intelligence, thoughtfulness, like she's heading off anyone else from doing it at the pass. Jeff's seen that tendency in so many kids over the years-- fuck, he did it, too. (Probably still does, if he's being honest.)
It's always so tempting to call it out in some well-meaning, uplifting way, but he knows that kind of defense mechanism isn't so easy to dismantle. Well-meaning and uplifting can just as easily become patronizing and condescending.
