"It is. I checked." Doc has restarted his stockpile right here in the garage, on the shelf he had ripped off the back wall. He only takes what gets left behind at the end of the day. These days it is not much. Perhaps others are hoarding in fear of the shortage again, and only leaving behind the things no one really wants to take. Beggars can't be choosers and Doc would take those things anyway, just in case.
"About time, too. We were all out, living on grits and contemplating cat food. I don't think they could have taken another day of my cooking." Not that Doc would call what he does actually cooking. Yes, grits need heat and stirring, but the canned beans when they had them just went into the microwave (poured out on a plate of course).
"There's a lot of baked macaroni pasta and cheese in the fridge if you are hungry." Doc baked a big batch and just put it in the fridge for them to chip away at, so that there was something readily available to eat whenever the boys felt up for the challenge of tackling a small meal instead of feeling the dread of needing to make something from scratch and deciding it isn't worth the effort.
"How is your brother?" Doc breaches the subject tentatively.
