DAY 037
THE DEAD RETURN

“The only reason for time is so that everything
doesn't happen at once.” —Albert Einstein

The dead return to Mathias forever changed by their experiences. Waking along the beach, near the tree line, or among the graves, they will find that their bodies are not as they remember them. They are whole again and not torn to shreds by the shadow creatures that cannot be described, but they are also not as they were before the Hunt. These residents will find, so strangely, that their bodies are in the physical state in which they first arrived in Mathias — any injuries or recovery they have made since their initial arrival no longer exists, as if their time in Mathias has simply been a horrible nightmare. Except they all now carry a last reminder of the Hunt with them: spiderweb-thin healed scars marking their injuries from the Hunt. Those who were injured by fire in the other realm also carry those burns with them.

The dead are not the only things that have returned to Mathias. Inexplicably, fall is back, with the temperature finally reaching above freezing and snow falling from trees to reveal beautiful autumnal colors. As the sun rises higher in the lightly cloudy sky and the day warms, the snow begins rapidly melting, puddles growing in the slowly revealed grass and little rivers forming in the streets. And with that snow comes the frozen blood from the deaths to the Hunt, tinting the street river on Phillips Drive a sickening shade of red.

Another oddity that residents will notice: houses with broken windows from the encounter with the fog on Day 015 have now been completely repaired, though any boards put in place are still there somehow. A small bit of good news, at least? And truly, how kind of Mathias to clean up its own mess.

Finally, alcohol is back. Enjoy in moderation, friends, for more will not be arriving the following morning.

THE NEW ARRIVALS

The newest arrivals to Mathias will wake up on the beach near The Grey Gull. It's quite chilly out with their wet clothes, but surely there's something to help warm them inside the restaurant. Indeed, their timing is perfect, for alcohol has finally returned to Mathias Township — and not just the cowboys' homemade moonshine.

DAY 038-039
THE CHANGE OF SEASON

The continued warm weather proves that the unseasonable shift of the previous day was not merely a fluke. Once again, the sun rises and brings with it a temperature that feels almost spring-like, save for the fact that each day there seem to be more and more leaves on the trees in hues of red and orange. For those who have been in Mathias for some time, this new type of weird may be almost normal at this point, but newer arrivals will likely find it quite odd.

The gently trickling river running along Phillips Drive is still somewhat pink in color as the snow continues to melt and refreeze each night. By Day 040, the bloody snow will finally be gone completely, though the relief will be... short-lived.

DAY 040
THE BLINDING WHITE

In the late morning of Day 040, when the sun is visible through patchy greyish clouds, the fog sweeps into town like a like a tidal wave. It moves in quickly and without warning, not from the waterfront but the forest, cascading through every street in a thick wave of white. Rather than a soft blanket enveloping the town, it is a heavy weight pressing down, blotting out the sky in a way that almost feels suffocating, for none can see further than their outstretch hand.

Those outside when it rolls in are left wandering blind, stumbling toward shelter as you're unable to even see your feet beneath you, let alone any obstacles in your path. Perhaps you call out for help, hoping for another voice to guide you toward shelter or simply another living soul. Or perhaps you were lucky enough to already be inside when the fog descended, quickly closing doors and windows to keep it from creeping in.

Unlike the last time the fog swept into the town, residents who encounter it are not immediately killed. Instead, they are simply disoriented, possibly losing their sense of time and place, and it is only after prolonged exposure that they will begin to feel off. A sense of being ill will cling to them if they are in the fog for too long, including dizziness, lightheadedness, or nausea — the time it takes to manifest varies from person to person, as does the duration it will last after leaving the fog.

By nightfall, the fog still has not dissipated.

CONDITIONS UPDATE
THE WEATHER conditions are fairly typical for late fall: chilly "sweater weather" days and nights that can dip just below freezing. You don't want to be outside without a coat, but it won't kill anyone if they bundle up. Probably.

THE FOG remains blocking the paths in the forest beginning a few dozen yards past the treeline, urging residents to stay huddled within the town proper, and it also now blocks the western section of town, beginning just past Hill Lane, before where residents know the chasm in the earth to be between Hill and Stine Road. Venturing into the fog blocking these areas is ill-advised.

DISAPPEARANCES continue. Castiel and Sam Winchester have vanished, and Dean Winchester has not returned with the others after his death during the Hunt.

THE GRAVEYARD has now seen around a dozen burials, both below and above ground. With the weather warming, though, something may need to be done about the handful of temporary graves aboveground...

ALCOHOL has returned to Mathias! A small stock of beer and cheap wine may be found at the General Store, and some homes may have a small store of alcohol in the fridge or pantry. The Grey Gull has also been restocked with its lower-end offerings of a variety of alcohol types. Alcohol does not replenish in the same way as food.

THE GREY GULL has been cleaned up and stocked with moonshine. Along with the newly restocked usual offerings, the place almost seems like an actual bar again.

THE GENERAL STORE is in a bit of a state following the brutal slaughter of two residents during the Hunt. Cleanup on aisle 3, anyone?

OOC NOTES
FOOD is now being mysteriously restocked as per usual, including inside homes and at the General Store. Alcohol is not being restocked. Use those rationing skills, friends.

REWARD REDEPEMPTION is back and will soon have a new option for anyone looking to spend big AP and learn a bit more of the lore of the town.

MADNESSES due to the Hunt have been earned by Klaus Hargreeves, Ellie, and Malcolm Bright and may now be claimed. Players may also claim additional sanity loss from the aftermath of the Hunt; only losses from the Hunt itself have been deducted from totals thus far.

SANITY REGAIN is now available! Players will submit a form with some details of the progress their character has made and the mod will review and decide on the numbers of points that will be regained.

MOD STATUS The usual reminder that it's mostly just Amy steering this ship for now, so things will probably be pretty slow for a while. Apologies in advance, and please don't feel shy about pinging me if you're stuck waiting for something.

"They soaked you in it," Malcolm told him, his grasp on Raylan's shoulder tightening. "Th..." He trailed off.

You're doing it again, he told himself.

He gave Raylan another kiss. "I'm sorry. That's a lot to go through."

He straggles to a halt, eyes still on the distant lighthouse. "Yeah?"

Neal blinks, registering how distracted he sounds. His attention is still on thoughts of the cave, that little slit in the rock, the darkness and the cold inside. The shadow he would have sworn he saw moving toward it from the lighthouse proper. Heartbeat picking up, breathing getting quicker--

Neal closes his eyes and shakes his head, forcing himself to turn around.

It's little moments like this that remind Daisy just how normal Neal is. He sounds so distracted, so far away with his mind on something else, and he seems to struggle with something before he finally turns around again. Bucky wasn't affected at all and Neal is too affected — she's falling somewhere in the middle and trying to pretend she's really just fine.

Moving closer with slow steps, she reaches out to gently touch the arm of that green suit he'd looked so good in on their picnic date. That seems like a lifetime ago now...

"Neal, you should go home," she advises him, watching his expression carefully. "It'll be good for you to see your friends." To see that they're alive and safe.

Home. Right. Malcolm. Doc. That was where Raylan and Negan would go first, too, he assumes. "Yeah."

He brushes his fingertips against her cheek, worry blossoming to replace the anxious need of a moment ago. "Wait, no. Not yet. You need to rest, we need to get you--I'll stay with you."

He shakes his head again, like that will somehow knock things back into place. "Where are you going?"

It wasn't a fix but drinks always helped. At least to take the edge off.

Raylan pulled out two glasses and shrugged off his jacket, hooking on the solitary hook behind the small bar before pouring them both two fingers out of the finest bottle of bourbon the place had opted to give them, looking over the label carefully before doing so.

"My housemate lit a cigarette last night and I about shot through the wall," he shared as he walked the glass over and looked at the kitchen door more boldly with a deep breath, heartbeat thrumming in his own ears, spiked with his adrenaline. "Bit'a water would put it out if you got that kinda aim."

It was a suggestion, anyway.

She reaches up to catch his hand with hers, pressing a kiss to his fingers without looking away from his face. There's something there that worries her... even scares her a little.

"I'm going home to rest. Bucky will walk with me, right?" Glancing over her shoulder, she doesn't wait for confirmation before focusing in on Neal again. "You need to make sure your friends are okay. They'll be worried about you."

Tough. Neal's starting to hate that word a little bit. All its implications and demands. It's too easy to look at Negan and Raylan and remember Doc ripping chunks from that wall because tough is too big and vague and malignant a thing for anyone to be forever.

"No," Neal says, surprising himself. "And neither is he, and neither are you. And Doc isn't, and Malcolm isn't, and..."

He closes his eyes, drawing in a deep, slow breath. He licks his lips. "Who the fuck made that a requirement anyway?"

Bucky watches the exchange but only until the point that Daisy moves over to Neal. At that point he twists and looks at something else, feeling somewhat like he's intruding on a private moment, especially since he can still what they are saying. It's only when Daisy asks that he gives a little nod.

It's not too hard to see something of himself in Neal right then. That feeling of being pulled towards doing something that one might not usually do if they were of sound mind. Maybe it was a curiosity for one man but the other -- that was an influence that was all too real for Bucky. Did he think that's what was happening here? He couldn't say for sure.

As they ascend up the stairs again, he steps towards the outer rail and lets them pass and when they do, Bucky moves in behind, making it all that much harder to change their mind.

Neal closes his eyes, nodding silently. "You're right. You're right."

He puts on a crooked smile on as he opens his eyes. "Never came back to life before. I guess I don't have the protocols down yet."

He doesn't want to be walking up these stairs, and the instinct that Malcolm feels the same way on some level gets Neal to tighten his grip on the other man's hand. He looks back once, past Bucky, into the dark, but then his gaze falls to Bucky's face.

He turns and keeps climbing. "If we're going in, we should do it right. Make sure we're prepared."

Neal's trying to convince himself as much as Malcolm.

Day 39

[personal profile] tinstar 2021-03-02 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
It had taken Raylan a full two days before he dared to take himself out of the secure zone of Phillips Drive he'd settled in, the only exception being the Grey Gull. One full day before he could even face the doors of the place he'd started calling home at some point. The 'Days Since Nightmare' sign had been at zero for days. But he couldn't hide, he couldn't stop living, so the Marshal hit the town.

As much as he had enjoyed watching the Town hall burn before he did, he was little disappointed to see that nothing had translated over, that the town hall was still there as fresh as the day he'd walked in off Phillips Drive. He stopped to stand in front of it for a long time, wondering if he waited long enough, if John Constantine would waltz out the door and give him shit for standing there looking stupid.

Finally, he went inside. Saw the Bulletin Board and it's new addition, which was promptly ripped off it's spot so he could read it. By the end of it, Raylan tore off the conclusion and stuck it back into place, shoving the rest in his pocket with an angry look around. How many people had already read this?

He knew where his next stop was. Where ever Will Graham was.

It took him a good half hour, which was a boon for everyone, letting Raylan get the worst of his snap and already spread thin temper under control, before he found the profiler tucked away in his greenhouse. His slow amble of a pace led him up to the door where he leaned crooked hips, hands propped on them as he looked around.

"Part of me wishes I could ask if all this is weed. I suppose its herbs and crap, right?"

Will was listening to Dolarhyde and Tier argue over the strength of the Dragon against the strength of the beast. He almost didn't hear Raylan and when he looked up, he rather wished he hadn't.

The man standing in front of him had half a face. Half of the face was recognizable as the Marshal. The other half?

Skin hung in string like strips, baring white bone to the cloudy moonlight. Blood, thick and slow from the cold and black in the moonlight moved like sludge along one side of the Marshal's neck. The eye ripped, dangling like a torn half cooked egg white, pupil spinning on the end of the optic nerve.

Will told himself that what he was looking at couldn't be reality. Doc hadn't said anything about Raylan or the other's coming back disfigured in any way and Will had to believe the man would have mentioned ...

A glob of cheek meat dropped with a wet thunk on the Marshal's toe.

The ex-profiler closed his eyes for a moment and slowly turned his head back to the foliage he was battling with, somewhere in a corner of the greenhouse the man from the Lecter estate cackled.

"I wouldn't know, Marshal." Will said struggling to keep his voice level, which meant he spoke softer than usual; even for him. "I was told something about lavender and tomatoes."

Those words make her want to cry but she hides it perfectly, years of practice put to good use as she smiles at him. It's not quite happy... but it's enough like it to pass for the occasion.

"That's what you have me for. I'm an old hat at this weird stuff." She gives his hand a little squeeze, then nods in the direction of 1306. "Go on. Call me later if you need to talk, okay?"

Malcolm sees what Bucky is doing, blocking the way back down. He looks at him, then looks at Neal. "More prepared? We had a lantern. We don't have weapons." Malcolm's eyes widen slightly. "Oh!" He pulls out his phone. "Look, we have a camera, even."

day 38

[personal profile] exsto 2021-03-02 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ After spending most of the morning at the graveyard, Bucky cleaned up, showered and found some clean clothes, of which he had to remove the left sleeve for his cybernetic arm. A small hazard that needs to be dealt with here just as much as it needed to be back in his world.

He heads out again, feeling that confinement of his small room to be too much. Looking at him, one would guess that he wasn't too affected by the events that had been occurring in Mathias over the past few days. Truth be told, it was starting to get to him in a way that he was beginning to recognize as being dangerous. But only for him.

Like the night before when he evaded sleep, Bucky was on his way to hopefully find a book on sign language. That excursion is cut short at the door when feet practically skid to a stop. Standing in front of him was a face he did not expect to ever see again.

Looking nervous, he waits to be recognized. Or for the fully exposed black and gold vibranium arm to be. ]

Oblivious to the horrors that plagued Will currently, Raylan took the soft voice as some kind of horror-cowed humanity, a hard to swallow flash of what he knew that Will had seen. What he had studied. Cruelly, Raylan was glad to see it. Good. Let Will suffer for his clinical needs while the rest of them functioned with some kind of humanity. Of course, Will might not have noted the spider work of scars across that side of his face, echoing the damage that Will had seen that night but Raylan assumed he did.

Smart man that he was.

It was unkind and he voiced none of it, but he did amble lazily in to inspect the pots, markedly keeping his distance on the other side of the structure.

"I could get excited about tomatoes. Lavender not so much. This a new project for you, or were you always a gardener on the side?"

The ex-profiler would be the last person to ever suggest that he didn't deserve to suffer for ... well it was a long list.

"No." He responded keeping his eyes down on the foliage he was working to pull free. "I fix things as a hobby. Usually boat motors but there aren't any of those handy so ..." he motioned towards the windows and the hinges that needed to be straightened out.

"I used to enjoy a good scream," he muses, a twinge of nostalgia tugging on the corners of his lips. Whether you were friends, lovers or enemies with Doc, you were almost always guaranteed to have a volatile, bumpy time. His mercurial, passionate, headstrong disposition had ensured it.

"I have found it far less rewarding when they do not scream back." Not to mention the lack of makeup sex. He had been destructive, put a few holes in a couple of walls, walked until the cold seeped into his bones, and stopped just short of screaming at the ocean. Glaring into the pitch-black horizon kicking small pebbles towards the high tide had sufficed.

"What would you recommend I do? Fall apart gracefully for their sake?" Doc asks, clutching a bundle of dead vines against his abdomen. He values Will's opinion, even if he might not know him all that well.

"Wait til a dock gets peeled back from the Fog. I bet you'll have plenty of guts to play in. You want any help?"

Go on, Will. Guess why he was here today. He wasn't here to make enemies. But his tone was casual as he looked around to see what he might actually help with, eyeing the windows that Will was gesturing to. Ambling that way, he inspected the half in screws, the dirty panels with it's mates set down below before they were broken.

"Couple'a screws, some glue to fix some of these frames, this place might come water tight."
this_ismydesign: (pic#14544273)

[personal profile] this_ismydesign 2021-03-02 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
It honestly did not even cross Will's mind to consider why Raylan was there today. He had done what was law enforcement instinct, he had analyzed the crime scene and attempted to understand the attacker. It hadn't gained them any ground, at least not at the moment so Will had set it to the back of his mind and was focused on what he could affect.

Keep from screaming his lungs out at Hannibal and the rest of his hallucinations, while also working to see if the greenhouse could be recovered so they might have a food source that wasn't the General Store.

And drinking. Lots of drinking.

Out of the corner of his eye Will could see Hannibal keeping pace with Raylan, watching the Marshal with assessing eyes. Abel Gideon was leaning back against the wall by where Will was working, smirking.

'Hell of thing, being stripped of your identity,' he drawled. 'Being reduced to a specimen under a microscope. You know how that feels, Mr. Graham. Adds trauma on top of trauma, makes a nasty cocktail.'

Will paused and balanced on his heels. He looked over at the Marshal, watched the torn eyeball swing lazily along the side of the man's high cheekbone. The distance suggested the Marshal had something on his mind, but Will would be more concerned if he didn't. He shook his head and went to yank the roots free from the floor.

"Did you need something, Marshal?"
thering: (Doc197)

[personal profile] thering 2021-03-02 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a correct answer to that? Because his disparate thoughts have been like a sparrow, flitting from one of those reasons to another at some point in time today. He has always been inclined towards anger. Hot-tempered. Headstrong. Not the kind of rage that Raylan keeps tucked away in his hat, but just- an elevated level of agitation, with the occasional lashing out. There was always somebody to be angry at, something to be angry about. Sickness. Pain. Misfortune. Abandonment. He has tried to change, leave that behind. It's not so easy when things do not go his way.

"Is it selfish to be angry at them? It is selfish to feel abandoned. The thought of not needing to find that much food anymore had crossed my mind. That is selfish too." Because he has taken upon himself that burden too, even though they could all provide for the house just fine. It is not solely his job or his duty or his mission to keep this ark buoyant in this sea of troubles. But it feels like it right now. "If they come back like the others..." Doc lets himself say. He doesn't want to finish that sentence. He doesn't want to hope. Turning to lie flat on his back, his hand drifts away from Malcolm's side as he finishes that train of unspoken thought staring at the ceiling.

"If they come back like the others, one of two things will happen. They'll never want to leave the house or they'll never want to come back into the house. And I would have to fix them too. On top of everything else that I need to do. Honestly Malcolm I..." Doc closes his eyes and shakes his head. "I don't feel the need to talk. The more I say the less you would think of me."
this_ismydesign: (pic#14544275)

[personal profile] this_ismydesign 2021-03-02 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
That earned Doc a bemused look. Will honestly had no concept of what the man suggested. He had never been one to scream in an argument and couldn't imagine want to have a breakdown anyone else around.

So he turned his attention back to the screw he was trying to coax out of its hole.

"Yes." It was the simple and direct answer, one that earned him a long suffering sigh from Hannibal. "Put yourself in their shoes. Would you want to be treated like a victim?"

A bit of cloth and a little finesse had the screw starting to come up. Excellent.

"You can fall apart together, then pick each other up."
abrightboy: (displeased with this)

Malcolm immediately and acutely feels the absence of Doc's touch. He rolls towards him, propping himself up on one elbow so he can look at him, setting his free hand splayed on Doc's chest.

"I'm not going to think less of you for having a perfectly normal human response to pain and grief. To being overwhelmed. To being tired in your bones from the endless caretaking that feels like Sisyphus pushing his boulder up the hill. But I want you to know that you're not alone. That if... things need fixed then I... want to help fix them. The things that need taken care of... there can be a 'we' in that."

"Yeah, somethin' to do with myself and my hands," he replied from his inspection, already pulling one window into it's place and carefully letting it fall back into it's slouched lean of disrepair.

He bobbed his head in concession. "To start with, anyway."

Raylan liked knowing where he stood with people. He didn't know where he stood with Will, didn't quite know to do with the indignities in his pocket. Manners still ruled sometimes, and it granted him the time and space to figure out the best way to approach it. He'd come up with steam in his boots, ready to rant and rave, but standing here, the arguments fell... flat. Childish, and the papers started heating, burning their own proverbial hole like money in a young man's pocket.

The South™ moved slow.
