That was all Mathias seemed good at doing: reminding him it was better to go out alone. Less chance of getting people hurt -- and having himself hurt.
The specters don't lead him down much of a path. Not that he had been expecting or really hoping. They always stayed the same distance away then walked into the forest. They went different routes, but all ended up somehow going there. He cursed under his breath and headed back into the town. A new road, one he didn't much care to remember at the moment, and accumulating snow.
He brushed snow away from the window front and took a seat. Out came a cigarette and his lighter. A few more specters walked through the street, and he simply watched them. His sides ached too much to care about trying to really track them further.
