DAY 010

“We make up horrors to help
us cope with the real ones.”
—Stephen King

The day dawns but few wake to see it. Only one, who has been exempt from the strange happenings about to unfold. She will face a day like any other, a farce of normality in an utterly abnormal universe — but she will face it alone. For none who will experience these strange happenings are to be found in the town until the next morning dawns. Each has been taken, whisked away to another layer of the town, peeled back and exposed like a raw nerve.

Mathias screams and there are none who can hear it.

THE DETAILS

Each exploration, encounter, and revelation happen separately from one another. Though some may include the same locations, none will overlap in time or space. The circumstances laid out in each prompt are exclusive to that situation — do not assume the answers someone else received will also apply to you.

Players may ask questions as they normally do for logs, but these should be kept as part of the designated thread. You may create a subthread under your header for questions, or intersperse them with your "tags". Your responses may be formatted as IC tags or as a more OOC "telling" what your character does rather than showing.

DAY 011

All characters involved in this event will wake on the morning of Day 011 in the exact location where they began to sleep on Day 009, but they will find themselves covered in a layer of dust just as thick as that which had covered much of Mathias. The dust does not extend to their surroundings.

The memories of what they encountered or saw remain clear in their minds, no matter how impossible they might seem. Sights, sounds, smells, all may be recalled with crystalline clarity, even if they wish it were otherwise.

Oh good, not dead. Hopeful. He wasn't looking forward to trying to haul an unconscious or dead body up the stairwell. Raylan picked up his hat and dusted it off with a frown, eyeing the door as he stepped closer to Malcolm, meeting him halfway and looking him over. He assumed some of Malcolm's reactions were due to the stress of the current mass of disoriented circumstances.

"I don't know." But he didn't like it. Without waiting, Raylan heads over towards the door and turns the handle with a aged creak of unused mechanics to open up the room beyond. "But this ain't the way out." Still, he stepped in. It was worth looking around while they were here, even if up was their eventual goal. "Got any explanation for how you got here?"

He knew he wouldn't.

Malcolm moved into the room and immediately began searching any cupboard or box or closet he could find, riffling them quickly before moving on. He would say he was investigating, if asked, but there was a tinge of desperation to it he couldn't mask. He was looking for something in particular. Once he'd exhausted the possibilities, he turned to look at Raylan.

"Nothing useful here," he noted.

Useful for what? He was prepared to give a reasonable-sounding investigative answer if asked.

The New Yorker was his own little tornado whipping around and Raylan let him, watching the edgingly frantic shuffling between glancing over the damp, molding room. His brain produced exactly one word. Addict. Maybe the reason Malcolm looked the way he did had nothing to do with where they were.

His eyes narrowed fractionally and gestured back towards the door.

"Then we go up."

Once they were out of the room and starting up the first few stairs, Raylan spoke again. "What were you looking for? Anything specific?"

[ rey frowns as she reaches an impasse, unable to climb higher and penetrate the canopy. nothing looks familiar, and there's no other structures in sight. rather than waste time, she descends at a quick pace, jumping down the last few feet.

she lands on all fours in the soft mud, brushing it off her hands onto her thighs as best she can while she stands. she uses the back of her arm to brush bits of hair that were sticking to her wet forehead back out of the way.

she looks back up at the sky, frowning. ]

It's just forest all around. Do you remember anything?

Oh, come on...

[ Disoriented for a moment, Claire pushes herself off the bed the moment she realizes it's not the one in the boarding house room she claimed.

It's unsettling, to wake up somewhere where you didn't go to sleep.

Naturally, in the face of such an event that demonstrates her own impotence at the situation, Claire flips off the mirror on the drawers.

And those she will inspect first, opening the drawers with measured care - just in case something nasty wants to spring forth. All the while her eyes flick up to the mirrors every now and again - are they fixed, could they be turned?

Before she leaves the room, she'll be thorough - keep the surprise of too many doors a little longer. ]

He'd resent the word 'addict', even if it was accurate. His drugs were prescribed and, when withdrawal passed, the relief of that would be shortlived before the symptoms those drugs were treating likely became devastating.

He looked at Raylan, but didn't quite meet his eyes. "I'm not sure we're equipped to know what might be useful," he remarked. "But anything that could tell us who brought us here or how. My money is still on some sort of sedative gas for moving us around."

No.

( and he was a light sleeper. if someone ㅡ or something ㅡ had snuck into the house he was sheltering inside, he'd have known it. he'd have fought .

while rey composes herself, kylo glances left and then right, following the line of the path as if looking for anything familiar or distinguishing. ideally, they should travel downhill if they wanted to find their way back to town.

but perhaps not just yet. they had been brought here for a reason, after all. )

Did you see any signs of the fog?

It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't the truth, Raylan could tell that much. He wasn't going to push right now; they were stuck somewhere unfamiliar and stirring shit wasn't going to help either of them. It would hold.

"That's startin' to be just as much of a stretch as ghosts. Maybe we'll find something' at the top of these stairs." His boots crunched as they stepped up and he brushed the leaves aside uselessly, watching as they fell down to the floor. "Stay on the inside and don't use the handrail. Can't say that I'd trust it."

No.

[ she circles the spot they were left in, her brows pinching together as she crouches down to look at the mud. were they dragged here? did they walk of their own volition? of course they've left their own boot prints but those are fresh. she tries to find any sign of how they ended up in the forest.

it's always the two of them together. her eyes flick up to kylo briefly before returning to the mud, sitting back on her heels, confusion beating out the discomfort of the chill from the misty rain around them.

it shouldn't be a comfort that whatever dropped her here decided to bring him with too. she shivers slightly but it has little to do with the cold.

she shakes her head as if it could shake the thought, smoothing her hand back over the dirt, moving leaves out of the way. she's not even looking for anything in particular, just something some clue of how they ended up waking in another unfamiliar spot. ]

Do you suppose this is even the same planet?

[personal profile] abrightboy 2020-10-31 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He looked down. Maybe falling wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, if they got high enough first...

He took a breath and forced that thought aside.

"Who suggested ghosts?" Malcolm asked in a distracted tone.

[ Hmph. Claire has been to better escape rooms. There should have at least been 7 keys and three number locks in this set of drawers.

She'll send a complaint to management about the lack of props.

In the meantime, she'll pick up the mirror from the bedside table, and attempt to peer further into all mirrors, see if she can't angle herself to glimpse what's there - using the hand mirror to look into the other mirrors if necessary. ]

While Eliot isn’t quite sure how he got here, he’s relieved, to say the least. At least, he’s pretty sure this is Whitespire. As he stands, he wonders if this a part of the castle he’s never seen before. That must be it.

Also, it’s Dark King Times, and well Eliot might have a soft spot for Sebastian, the Dark King reputation has to seep in somewhere.

So, really, despite the fact that everything here is practically screaming SOMETHING ISN’T RIGHT, Eliot doesn’t pay it much attention. He walks purposely down the hall, passing the three doors. When he gets to the double doors at the end, he makes the move to push them open.

[personal profile] tinstar 2020-10-31 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
While the stairs weren't wide enough for them to walk freely together, something in his gut was glad that he'd ended up on the outside half. He could grab Malcolm if the smaller man decided to go for a long dive. There was something going on with Malcolm and it was pushing him more and more towards the previously supplied label.

"Coupla different people. Well, one was ghosts, one suggested Demons. Unless this is the Truman show, I still can't figure anythin' out for how the storm kept me in that first set of houses. No type of science I know that causes that kinda shit." And he was seriously starting to entertain the possibility, however scant, of magic being the reason.
abrightboy: (curiosity)

[personal profile] abrightboy 2020-10-31 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you mean the impenetrable fog that everyone keeps talking about?" Malcolm asked. "Whether you believe it's science or ghosts or demons, some being brought us here and I think it's a more productive line of inquiry to pursue the why to find the how," he explained, putting a hand to his head as he squinted against the increasingly throbbing headache he couldn't shake. "We're inside the cage. We can't see the locks."

[ Anything if she gets real close to the mirrors and tries to look at it "sideways" from as close to the glass as possible?

Also, putting her fingers against the fixed mirrors, is there a gap between the tip of her finger and the mirror image of it, or is there no gap? ]

I don't know.

( he manages to sound calm as he says it, which is good, because descending into a state of panic isn't going to do either of them any good. he blows out an annoyed breath all the same, longing for his lightsaber ㅡ if nothing else, he could use it to mark a path when they eventually decided on their route.

ㅡ which gives him another thought.

stepping off the path, he drops to his haunches, picking through the carpet of leaves in search of stones. something larger, maybe. sharper. anything that can gouge the wood properly. )

But I think that it's more likely that we're in the forest surrounding the town than we are somewhere else.

Unreal. Eliot sighs, wondering why just once things can’t be easy for him. He doesn’t waste time trying to do anything logical. He just wants to get out of this cold-ass corridor.

Eliot decides to try the door closest to him, the third one from where he began.

[ that's her instinct too, but can they really be sure? especially with no evidence of how they woke. she stands again, hands on her hips while her eyes blink up at the sky. if the sun was out, she'd at least be able to orient themselves. she's learned moves from east to west, and she's got enough energy to walk a couple klicks and back if needed. ]

We should split up and scout. Count our paces and then meet up again.

[ rey has never seen a horror holodrama. ]
